The reason I write now is that I just finished scanning a bunch of ancient color slides of Honduras and put a few of those photos on the web, including one of the kids at the American school in 1954. | Comments: | I too am an alumnus from the American School in Tegucigalpa (1964-1970). I graduated from high school in 1970. I was born and raised in Tegucigalpa. Lived and worked there for many years until recently when I moved to Castroville, Texas. Living and working in the USA has many advantages, but I do miss Honduras, my dear friends, and its simplistic but tasty food.
While reading some of the comments in this Dreambook, I came accross some familiar American School names. Mr. Briece was also my music teacher and a fantastic one at that. I do also have fond memories of Miss Judy Stock (English teacher). I remember Didi Lima from school. Claudia Romero Mendez passed away a few years back. Her sister Dinorah is married with children. | Comments: | So glad I found this site. Attended Escuela American from 3rd to 7th grade, 08/71 thru 08/76. Still view that time period as the best of my educational years and one of the better of my life. Needless to say, I was devastated to leave and the culture shock upon returning to the states was severe. For me, Tegu will always be home.
It would be good to hear from classmates especially those who left prior to graduating like myself. If anyone has info on Richard Ebert (or the Ebert Clan), Jose Francisco Nunez or Laura Atkinson let me know. Richard moved back to Virginia in '76 but, I lost track of him. | Comments: | Hi, Some of the previous messages must have been deleted as I have signed the Dreambook before, but my e-mail address has changed. I attended the American School from 1947 to 1955. I have so many wonderful memories of this school and of all the wonderful friends. Even though my parents were Americans, I learned to speak english in the American School. We had a wonderful Principal, Mary Quinlan, who came to Tegucigalpa from Chipewa Falls, Wisconsin. Miss Quinlan came with Ruth Dibovik. They were the only two teachers, but they were the two teachers who started the school. If I remember correctly, I think that there were only two grades (lst and 2nd)and a few "older" students who also attended the school. I believe they received special classes from Miss Quinlan and Miss Dibovik. As the years passed, and the school grew, more teachers were hired. I especially remember Miss Teresa Castro, who was our Spanish teacher. When I came to the United States in 1955, the school had 10 grades with plans to increase the grades each year. I am very anxious to visit Tegucigalpa soon and visit the American School in the "new" building. It is amazing to see that it has grown up. I wish my Mother and the other few Americans who grouped together to start the school could see it now. They would be so impressed! |

| Comments: | I started at the American School in 6th grade in 1990, in Ms Gatti's class. I don't remember a great deal of names, but among those I do remember are Mackenzie and Melanie Kuntz, Jennifer, Xiomara Soto and Andres. I was in Honduras due to my dad working with the government's water provision project, and we returned to Scotland, where I still am now, in 1993. I have to admit I don't have great memories of being at the school, possibly because I was used to the fairly different British education system, but I really enjoyed my time in Honduras. It started my interest in Spanish and Latin American culture and prompted a love of the Spanish language that I still have now; I studied it at university, lived for a year in Spain, and use Spanish in my job. So thank you Honduras! |
