Comments:I was at Ft McClellan for Basic in the Fall of 1968. I then went to Ft Sam Houston for Medic training, then to El Paso for OJT. Permanent duty was at Valley Forge General Hospital. We saw a lot of young men coming back from Viet Nam to wait for medical discharge with mental health issues.
After my ETS in 1971 I went home to Kentucky. I married an ex-Marine who served in Viet Nam around 1964. Both of my parents were vetrans in WW2. Both of my brothers were veterans and married veterans. Both of my sisters married veterans. Last Veterans Day at my son's Church, the minister asked for all veterans to come forward. I was surprised at the long line of men and women lined up in the front of the Church. Everyone clapped and shouted "Thank You" to all of us. We shook hands. Being a veteran is one of the things that I am proud of doing in my life. My oldest grand daughter is about to graduate High School and go on to college. In comparison, instead of going off to college, I joined the Womens Army Corp.

Comments:Just checking in to see how you are all doing. Three new members were added to our Chapter 87 Women's Army Corps Veterans Association...three younger...repeat...younger members who have retired fairly recently. I love going to the meetings and watching their faces as we "conduct" our meetings...Our dwindling numbers from WWII, Korea, and a couple who were in during the Vietnam era are a bunch of old ladies ( probably not unlike a lot of old gentlemen veterans) who have trouble remembering Roberts' Rules of Order, get pretty silly and generally have a fun time getting together like old friends. We are facing our tomorrows with good humor, caring and a variety of aches and pains...as my buddies and I used to say in WWII, " Don't think it hasn't been fun!"...

Comments:Hi, went to Ft. McClellan for basic 1967. Needless to say my maiden name is McClellan so I got alot of ribbing about it, especially in the gas chamber! Had fun the most of the time I was in the Army. Anyone remember "Queenie" from basic? Went on to AIT at Ft. Sam Houston, TX, on to Ft. Gordon, GA as a medic and ended up with the MOS as a pysch. specialist. until 1970. Thanks to a fellow that is a wonderful source of information, I have been able to talk to Kathy Batog a great buddy in the day and I have the phone # for Lynn Bigelow too, haven't talked to her yet. So where is Linda Hughes? She was in a car accident with me coming back from Aikens, SC to Ft. Gordon and Sp5 Wally Vine came in the ambulance to get us. Hopefully that part will jog Linda's memory. Like to hear from any and all who knew when I was young. Thanks for the sight by the way.

Comments:Hello fellow vets,
I was looking for a ring I couldn't afford back in the day & found it under "The classic women's army corp ring", then I ran across this dreambook. So why not give a comment or two.
I joined the WAC in 1968. Basic trained at Fort McClellan. I remember having to call the guys "trees" and wearing this long ugly skirt that had 5 thousand buttons on it along with the ugliest little black shoes. But it was a nice memory with the gang. Then I went to El Paso Texas, then overseas. I was a Medic. I wanted to go to Viet Nam to be with my brother, however due to not being an officer, they wouldn't let me go. I went to Okinawa instead in 1970 & worked at the USARIS hospital until I was honorably discharged in 1971. There was a club down there called the Bonanza Club. We had a lot of fun at that club (it helped you forget about the guys coming over by helicopter from Nam all torn up &/or in need of mental help)
I am so glad I joined the service when I was 18. It was the best thing that ever happened to me.
Love you guys!

Comments:Basic Training May-Jul 1975, 3rd Plt, Co E 1st WAC Basic Training Battalion (in the old U-shaped 1-story barracks because the 3-story buidlings at WAC Center were being refurbished). Let me throw out some cadre names...just to jog your memories..LT Annin, LT Doll, DS Nancy Hinkleman (1st Plt), DS Andrea "Jinx" Jenkins (2nd), DS Willie Lewis (my primary DS...he hated training WACs) & his asst DS Chris Domingue (where are you?), DS Houpt (she killed herself in '76), DS Mary Strobridge (lookout!), SGT "Mother" Tucker (co. clerk), and some of my fellow trainees: Brewster, LaValley, Zehner, Lopata, and Stirling (Linda, not Mary). Left McClellan for Ft Hamilton & Chaplain Asst School AIT til late Sep 76. Was supposed to permanent party at Eustis, but Lopata and I went to DA after AIT & they let us trade assignments. Hers was to Ft Campbell but they were overstrength in 71M, so the LTC asked where I wanted to go. McClellan to be a drill sgt. Had to do 1 yr as a chap.asst (at Century Chapel & WAC Chapel)...names...Vickie Leister, Ch Lizor, Ch Gunti, Ch Hartzell, Ch Schroeder...til I made E-4. Put the paperwork in immediately & got Co D 1st Bn. DS Academy in early 77, back to Co D at McClellan. CPT Pennington, LT Uline, SrDS Adkins, DS Reddick, DS Nelson, DS Fludd. At one point we were 1 DS short & each had a platoon + shared the 5th. Duty NCO every 4th night and every 4th weekend day. Took my honorable discharge & left smartly in May 78. Joined ROTC at JSU & got commissioned Chem Corps in '80 after being #1 cadet in US at SrROTC Camp in 79. Got talked into going back on active duty by COL Phillips & MG Watson. Was Training Officer, Co D, Chem Trng Bn til early '83, then Protocol Officer for Chem School til Jul '84. Went to Rotary Wing Flight School Ft Rucker til May '85 & got assigned to Lawson Army Airfield as helicopter pilot (CPT). Completed Fixed Wing Qual course & flew U-21 & C-12 airplanes til 1988. Transferred to AL National Guard & completed 21 yrs military while I was a 747 pilot for United Airlines (my day job). Now retired from both. This is a neat website. Would love to hear from anyone who shared adventures with me ! LONG LIVE THE WAC !!!

Comments:Hi everyone....just checking up on my Website to see if people are still checking in and still locating old friends.
I get a real thrill once or twice a year when someone will contact me by e-mail or by phone ( 1-520-297-3496 ( Tucson, Az) to find out if I know how to ...whatever...or where they might locate....whatever...and have I ever hard of whatever...it's just fun to share adventures for a few minutes. Our Chapter 87 of the Women's Army Corp Veterans Association is down to maybe 12 to 14 members and we are slowing down...but for whatever reason our meetings are hilarious and while we can't seem to remember a lot of Roberts Rules of Order, we do have a lot of laughs. Our ages run from about 90 down to 60 something...WWII to Korea to Vietnam. I hit 85 this year ( who? me????) and on Veterans Day my 6 kids, my 14 grandchildren, and the older ones of my 10 greats take turns calling me up to say Thanks for your time in Service. Hay, I wouldn't have missed it.
One of life's big adventures and a lot of friends. And love to all of you! Mary Stirling

The WAC got rid of all us youngsters as cadre and brought in 'old soldiers', they could barely march, let alone exercise! I was sent to Orleans, France, where I served over 3 years, married my late husband, David Walls, while there. On a second tour of France, Poitiers this time, I became pregnant and was discharged. I served over 6 years in the WAC and loved every minute! My maiden name was Carlsen. I have many fond memories of my tour at Fort McClellan, especially the time we had an entire troop from Hawaii!

Comments:I enlisted in the Army in June 1974, and was assigned to Co. B, 1st BN, Ft. McClellan, AL.

From what I understand our unit was one of the first to have male DI's. Ours was DI Mooney. He was really cool - helped us out with inspections. Other DI's were SGT Sims (female), SGT Lane (female). There was one who used to sing us TAPS at night before lights went out. I don't remember her name. Also went through a few weeks of STC (special training) because I wasn't as fast as some of the other girls - I thought I was doing pretty good! Anyway, there was a SGT Ross who was our DI for STC.

Does anyone remember Carol Fenton? That was her married name.

Being in the Army was great - it's an experience that I think all girls/women should experience, especially when they don't have much direction in their lives.

I got out of the army early due to getting married, but reenlisted twice more later in the Reserves. Would not change a minute of my time in the military! Lots of good memories.

If any should remember me, please feel free to e-mail.

Comments:Hi! I attended Basic Tng at Ft McClellan, AL, in Aug 1974. Drill Sgt Strohbridge was tops! She was tough, but very fair. I attended AIT at Ft Ord, CA, and went on to serve 1 year with the 101st Airborne at Ft Campbell, KY, then to Germany for 2 years. I then spent one tour in the Indiana National Guard. I went to college, and I worked for the Veterans Administration (now the Dept of Veterans Affairs) for about 7 years. My tour of duty in the military helped to shape and mold my future in remarkable ways and opened doors of opportunity for me that otherwise would not have existed. I look fondly back on my memories and am extremely thankful for the guidance, direction and opportunities I gained from my experience in the military. Thanks for the adventure - it's been a great one! Esprit de Corp!

Comments:Just found this site. It is great. I was in the
WAC from March 1962-1964. I of course did basic at Ft. McClelland, then to Texas for medical corpsman school, then to Ft.Ord to work in the hospital there. Went back to Ft. Sam for advanced training in the operating room, and then back to Ft Ord. Was recently vacationing in the Ft. Ord area and was sad that it had closed. I really liked the WAC experience, wouldn't have traded it for anything. Would like to hear from and about anyone that was in the same places at the same time.

Comments:My son started this web page for me a number of years ago...I'm getting too old to remember just how many years! I just turned 84...but I would like to tell you that old WACS are not forgotten...our Chapter 87 of the WAC Veterans Association was invited to come to Mt. View Retirement Village for Veterans' Day to share our adventures with the residents. We had a good lunch , talked to some of the residents and then 7 of us began telling a few of our adventures . Two of us dated back to WWII, three of us were Korean vets and two were from the Vietnam War. Afterwards we had a chance to talk with some of the "old folks" who had listened to us. One of the ladies who talked to me said that her husband was assigned to the USS Enterprise which brought me and a couple hundred other Wacs home after our ship , the Athos II was damaged on our way back to the States. The Enterprise picked us up in the Azores. Another old fellow came up to me in his wheelchair and said he had been in the US Navy and was out in that storm in December of 1945. He began to cry when he was talking about it. I patted his hand and told him I knew how some things were hard to forget. We are fading away but our memories are not. Mary Stirling
