Comments:I joined the WAC in March of 1955, spent well over a year at Fort McClellan, first basic, then clerical school, then I was cadre in Company B for a year. The WAC got rid of all us youngsters as cadre and brought in 'old soldiers', they could barely march, let alone exercise! I was sent to Orleans, France, where I served over 3 years, married my late husband, David Walls, while there. On a second tour of France, Poitiers this time, I became pregnant and was discharged. I served over 6 years in the WAC and loved every minute! My maiden name was Carlsen. I have many fond memories of my tour at Fort McClellan, especially the time we had an entire troop from Hawaii!

Comments:I enlisted in the Army in June 1974, and was assigned to Co. B, 1st BN, Ft. McClellan, AL.

From what I understand our unit was one of the first to have male DI's. Ours was DI Mooney. He was really cool - helped us out with inspections. Other DI's were SGT Sims (female), SGT Lane (female). There was one who used to sing us TAPS at night before lights went out. I don't remember her name. Also went through a few weeks of STC (special training) because I wasn't as fast as some of the other girls - I thought I was doing pretty good! Anyway, there was a SGT Ross who was our DI for STC.

Does anyone remember Carol Fenton? That was her married name.

Being in the Army was great - it's an experience that I think all girls/women should experience, especially when they don't have much direction in their lives.

I got out of the army early due to getting married, but reenlisted twice more later in the Reserves. Would not change a minute of my time in the military! Lots of good memories.

If any should remember me, please feel free to e-mail.

Comments:Hi! I attended Basic Tng at Ft McClellan, AL, in Aug 1974. Drill Sgt Strohbridge was tops! She was tough, but very fair. I attended AIT at Ft Ord, CA, and went on to serve 1 year with the 101st Airborne at Ft Campbell, KY, then to Germany for 2 years. I then spent one tour in the Indiana National Guard. I went to college, and I worked for the Veterans Administration (now the Dept of Veterans Affairs) for about 7 years. My tour of duty in the military helped to shape and mold my future in remarkable ways and opened doors of opportunity for me that otherwise would not have existed. I look fondly back on my memories and am extremely thankful for the guidance, direction and opportunities I gained from my experience in the military. Thanks for the adventure - it's been a great one! Esprit de Corp!

Comments:Just found this site. It is great. I was in the
WAC from March 1962-1964. I of course did basic at Ft. McClelland, then to Texas for medical corpsman school, then to Ft.Ord to work in the hospital there. Went back to Ft. Sam for advanced training in the operating room, and then back to Ft Ord. Was recently vacationing in the Ft. Ord area and was sad that it had closed. I really liked the WAC experience, wouldn't have traded it for anything. Would like to hear from and about anyone that was in the same places at the same time.

Comments:My son started this web page for me a number of years ago...I'm getting too old to remember just how many years! I just turned 84...but I would like to tell you that old WACS are not forgotten...our Chapter 87 of the WAC Veterans Association was invited to come to Mt. View Retirement Village for Veterans' Day to share our adventures with the residents. We had a good lunch , talked to some of the residents and then 7 of us began telling a few of our adventures . Two of us dated back to WWII, three of us were Korean vets and two were from the Vietnam War. Afterwards we had a chance to talk with some of the "old folks" who had listened to us. One of the ladies who talked to me said that her husband was assigned to the USS Enterprise which brought me and a couple hundred other Wacs home after our ship , the Athos II was damaged on our way back to the States. The Enterprise picked us up in the Azores. Another old fellow came up to me in his wheelchair and said he had been in the US Navy and was out in that storm in December of 1945. He began to cry when he was talking about it. I patted his hand and told him I knew how some things were hard to forget. We are fading away but our memories are not. Mary Stirling

Comments:I was stationed at Ft. McClellan in August 1978 thru October 1978. I had the priviledge of marching in the parade that retired the WAC flag. My drill sargeant was Cheryl Hackett. She was really nice and helped developed my leadership skills. I was a platoon leader almost the full time during basic training. My nickname was "Stretch".

Comments:Enlisted Oct. 1960, Clerical School Jan.-Mar 61. Ft. McClellan.A fantastic tour at The Aberdeen Proving Grounds-Ballastic research Labs! Beautiful tour in Hawaii as Cadre at The WAC Det.
Left the WAC in 1963 and rejoined The Army reserve in Columbus GA.1975 after going to nursing school. Moved to SC where i was a member of a Med. Det. A vacancy came open and i became an Instructor for the 91B course teaching Army Reserve and Nation Guard students.
I volunteered at the VA Hospital in New York where we had a wonderful Lady Vets Group! I miss them all, as here in the mts. of North Carolina we are quite a way from any VA hospitals or clinics. Ladies you can do so much when you volunteer with the vets.

Comments:Hi there. I love this site. Just wondering if anyone was in McClellan Sept 76 for basic training? I had Drill Sgt Krugler. It was Bravo company, that's all i remember. Was hoping to find out how Sgt Krugler is, and anyone else in Bravo at that time. Looking for Wendy Denny. contact me @ dsterr123@aol.com. P.S. I was platoon leader when our Drill was out sick. Had a blast imitating all the other Drills while marching the platoon around during training.

Comments:Basic training at Ft. McClellan May 1975-Jul 1975, B Co, 2nd BN, PLT 5. Had a lot of fun; if I'd known how much nerve it was going to require I probably would not have done it. Too young to know how scared I should have been. Went back to McClellan after the WACs were gone. My husband was an instructor with the Chemical School in 1987 and his unit lived in my old barracks. Now it's all gone--closed. Good memories.

Lost touch with most everyone from basic. Does anyone remember Drill Sgt. Wartell? Also, how can I get a copy of the yearbook from basic training? I would appreciate hearing from anyone that can let me know.

Thanks,
