I'm hunting my Hartford ancestors and came across James Stillman Hartford and the story of his Uncle N. who was taken by pirates, bound and skinned alive, after killing fourteen with a spike. I don't see a reference for this item and am wondering where the author found this fascinating tid-bit.

I note some mention of the Marden family among your readers. I wrote and published (hardcover) a 631p. Marden Family Genealogy in 1974. If anyone thinks it might be helpful to their research I do have a VERY FEW copies left.
I've also published a large Fitts Gen. (1989) and have just finished a Getchell book. Those are not Epsom names but would be glad to receive email queries from anyone searching those families.

I've had a fun time exploring - seeing the cemetaries, checking especially the Yeaton cemetary, looking at the stones and seeing if I had any relatives in Epsom. Couldn't find any.
Do hope you come to Holderness. Would enjoy hearing you present.
What fun exploring - wouldn't even get wet on a rainy day.

While researching our family tree (the Johnson's of Northwood New Hampshire), I happened upon this and printed out a copy for my wall! It's a fabulous addition to our family tree project. If anyone knows of any other sites or locations that have photos of our family, let me know! Wow! what a nice ending to my week! Sincerely, Paula Johnson - a descendant of Samuel Johnson

The family, area and tombstone photos really help to bring family history to life. The tombstones greatly helped to cleared up some mysteries about where specific Locke descendents had been buried. It is obvious that many caring individuals have spent thousands of hours in gathering and researching the information, and it is truly appreciated. If I eventually get our Locke Family Association site only half as complete as your site, I will consider it to be a success. Thanks for the information and the inspiration. Best regards from the Locke Family Association! We wish all of you who are hunting for your ancestors the best of luck! -KL

Comments:I thought that you may be interested to know, I now understand that your town was named after my town Epsom in Surrey England. I thought you might be interested in why my town was called Epsom as this would also apply to your town I guess .....The first recorded history of Epsom dates to the earliest Saxon period when it was known as Ebbisham, Ebesham or Epsham. The name derives from the presence of a spring in the chalk hills known as the earthbourn from whence the princess Ebba, in time to become the wife of the first Saxon Christian King, received her baptismal title in AD 660. Epsom is also found in the Domesday book as Ebesham, here derived from the Saxon words 'Ebbe' (to flow back) and 'ham' (a village).

At the time of the Norman Conquest, Epsom was the property of the Monastery of Chertsey. Apart from a short period during the reign of Henry VIII, it remained among the Crown lands until 1597 when Elizabeth I gave it to Edward Darcy, a headstrong and wilful man, who as a result of gambling was forced to sell it to George Mynn of Lincolns inn. It was from that period until well into the 19th Century that the Manor of Epsom came into the ownership of a number of families who had considerable influence on the development of the area.

I hope this is of some interest to you
Take care
God Bless
Jo

I have tracked my RAND lineage back to Stephan Rand (Sarah Barker)in New York. I am looking for the connection...his parents..etc? I'm not sure if 'my' Rand lineage is decended from the Rands in the Epsom Settlers listings.

I am the daughter of Coy Walter Rand
(b:1929,South Bend,Indiana, m:Marjorie Houck);

son of Coy Hendricks Rand
(b:1886,Dowagiac,Cass County,Michigan, m:Helen Lena Buckwald);

son of Walter S. Rand
(of Cass and Van Buren County, Michigan, m:Jennie Buck); Walter and Jennie moved from New York. Walter is listed in the 1880 Cass County Michigan, Federal Census Index.

son of Stephan Rand and Sarah(Sally)Barker of New York.

I have lots of detail on my Rand family tree, but it stops with Stephan Rand of New York...

If you can help, please email me. Perhaps I have vital information for you as well.

Comments:Hi
In looking at your site I see that you mention that Ruth Knowles "married a Nutter". From Merrill's Barnstead Gen and that of Hatevil Nutter I have that the Nutter was Samuel Dennett Nutter, son of John D. Nutter and Hannah Dennett. He was b. in 1804 and d. in Barnstead 1890. He narried Esther in 1833 and Ruth in 1836. Thought you might like to have this information
