I have photos of ships and crew and I have no idea who they all are or what division he was in. He was always quiet about his time in the Marines. If you know a site where I can post or donate these photos please contact me. I would love to hopefully have images that others would love to have.

Comments:My father-in-law Edward J. Cackoski (Ski) commissioned the LST 1157 from Bath Main and served a tour on it in the Bikini islands during the nuclear testing.

I actually have his "Plank Owner" Certificate from March 14, 1953 signed by L Reynolds framed on my wall. I have also heard many stories (over and over again) of his adventures at sea, the strange habits of the natives they evacuated, the good taste of fresh coconut milk and the bad taste of the warm beer with formaldehyde. I also have some inside information on some bicycles that "inexplicably" appeared on deck one day after they had left port.

Edward passed away recently and the Navy was present during the funeral which was very moving and appreciated. He was a wonderful and giving person who served his family, church and community very generously until his last day. I am glad to see his name listed here.

Thank you again for this web site. I am sure the rest of the family will appreciate it as much as I do.

If you knew Ed, Id love to hear from you.

Best wishes,

Robb Miller

Comments:Just arrived home after the Reunion in Branson Missouri and what a great time we had there. They just keep getting Bigger and Better each and every year. I thought I had a 9.5 hour drive home but it turned out to be an 11 hour drive. But it was well worth the drive to be able to see the shipmates again and to see all of the new shipmates who attended this year was fantastic. The brotherhood of the shipmates is just as strong today as it was 43 years ago in Yokuska Japan and Viet Nam. Thanks to the great job Clovis and Deb Long and Bud and Sally Hamilton did in Branson. It was a wonderful reunion that everyone will never forget. Hoping to see all of you next year for the Reunion in New Orleans, Louisiana. Phil BM3

We had 85 folks for the banquet dinner, some shipmates came alone but most were with their wives and some even brought friends or family members, it was a very good turn out, the largest so far, hope more will attend New Orleans. Deb and I would like to Thank everyone that came this year for attending, A special Thanks goes to Bud and Sally Hamilton for helping us getting it set up. We had quite a few that this was their first time at a reunion and hopefully they will be attending future ones. And to all those that come every year, What can I say but We Love Ya and will see you next year. And for those that have never had the chance to make a reunion, you have a year to make those plans, give it a try at least once I know you will not be disappointed, plan your vacation next year for New Orleans. Ya'll know us guys from the bridge area don't like stepping in that stuff. The guys from Navigation, CIC, Radarmen, Radiomen, and skivvy wavers like a clean deck as we were the leaders, with out us we wouldn't have gotten to where we were heading. But the truth is it took all of us doing our jobs to make it work. Ready for Branson. Looking forward to seeing everyone. QM's will be there in force.

Comments:Deck "Apes"... well we needed someone to do the dirty work.

BM1 Tredwell saw the light and let go of my warm body. Got up to the Bridge and liked looking down on the main deck.... It wasn't always nice or easy but it was lots better then working on deck or down with the 'snipes'...

So the 'Ops Pukes' were and are the best.

The model of 1157, though not fully completed, will be my representative at the reunion.

Do a toast to all the TC crew past, absent and present at the reunion. Next year the US LST Association may return to Branson for its September 2012 Convention. Come join us and meet some real live heroes... The LST Sailors that landed troops on the enemy beaches. Many of these men made numerous trips to the Normandy Beachhead to keep the troops and equipment flowing. Many more were doing the same tasks in the Pacific as we closed in on Japan's islands...

Enjoy the reunion and hopefully in 2012 I'll be there.

Comments:Shipmates: Lets have a show of emails showing what department will have the most crewmembers attending the reunion this year in Branson and the one in 2012 in New Orleans. Will it the oil smelling snipes, the sweaty dechapes, the stinky skivey waivers, the nose in the air quarter masters, the road kill cooks or anyother department that I may have overlooked. I reallly think that the deck apes the BM's will have the largest amount of shipmates attending because deck apes are the backbone of the Navy. Do you agree with me. I will be attending the Branson reunion and I will be hosting the New Orleans Reunion. Lets hear from the rest of you shipmates and your plans for this reunion and the one next year. I'LL bet I have more response from the wonderful deck apes than any other department. Waiting to hear from each and every one of you. Phil BM3

John Hancock was a 2nd class boatswains mate when he was transferred to another ship. Alfredo Malave who lived in Puerto Rica was a seamen when he was transferred to another ship. Hancock lived in Mobile Alabama. Would love to make contact with both of these shipmates but having a hard time doing so. With all of the modern tecknoligies that they have these days with U tube and Smart phones etc, I thought that one of you all out there with a lot of experience with these modern marvels could find a way to locate these two gentlemen. Comments:Shipmates: Well god buddies, its time for all of you last minute procrastinators to get busy and sigh up for the upcoming reunion in Branson in October. All of us are getting up in age and we do not know how many more years that we will be able to continue this wonderful opportunity in our lives. We lost 40 years in the making nor realizing how important is was for all of us to get back together. Now that we have a dedicated crew of shipmates that are committed to making this happen each and every year, the only thing that you have to do is to come and have the greatest time of your life. You know that you always wondered how your buddies made out, how they are doing these days, what they look like, if they have changed Etc. Well shipmates I can tell you that we may have gotten older and fatter and grayer on the tops we have not changed all the much. The faces are basically the same, the characters are still the same, the gestures and facial expressions are still the same, the mannerisms are the same and the voices are still the same. But most of all the loyalty to our Country and to our great ship (THE USS TERRELL COUNTY LST 1157) is still the same. The loyalty to one another that served is still the same also. So shipmates, please do not delay or put it off any longer. Make sure that that this is the year that you are going to come and see for yourself if what I am saying is true. I promise you that it will be an event that will stay in your mind for the rest of you lives. Sigh up and come see for yourself. Hope to see and talk to you all there. Phil BM3

Comments:Hello to all of my fellow shipmates of the Terrell County. Hoping that you all are copeing will with the terrible winters that just passed in the northern part of the country and the torrid heat wave that we are having across the country right now. Not to mention the horrific tornadoes that did damage to our neighbors across the country. There has got to be some good news somewhere my friends. Well the good news is our upcoming reunion in Branson Missouri in October. A place to come and socalize with the brave men that sailed the high seas with you. The ones that were in the war zones with you, the one's that went through typhoones with you, the ones that went on your liberty with you, the one's that had your back through thick and thin no matter what happened at sea or on land. That's your fellow shipmates and blood brothers of the Terrell County LST 1157. You have the opportunity to relax and have the best time of your lives just relaxing and talking face to face with shipmates that you have not seen in the last 40 plus years. You have the opportunity to rehash old sea stories with the same shipmates that lived on the same exact ship that you served on. You get to see how they all faired in life and most to all you get to meet their wives. The reunions keep on getting bigger and better every year my friends. Comments:I was aboard the Terrell Maru from the Fall of 1963 to the Fall of 1965. As my first ship to start a 25 year run with the Navy. Served aboard 1157, 1185, 1183 and 1187 during 19 years at sea out of 25. Made QMC in 72. "Ticked off" the CNO in 75 and finally Retired in 1987 as a QMC(SW).

Sadly, I will not be at thus years reunion but I am loaning the event a scale model of the 1157. It will be nearly finished and will be returned to me after the reunion for completion. I have about 160 hours into it already wiht about the same to go until she is RFS (ready for sea).

This model is made of Popular, Bass and Balsa woods and it measures 4.1" wide by 28.8" long. For any critics , well help me find better plans for the ship so I may do a more accurate job of building the Terrell Maru.

The Main Deck (midships) is removeable so the Tank Deck and Turn Table are viewable. Vehicle Ramp goes up and down with a little help. Because of the scale (1:160) the Bow Doors are fixed in the open position with the Bow Ramp down.

Good Lord Willin and the Creek Don't Rise I'll be at the next reunion.

Good night and stay cooll

I was on board form Jan.1967 to Sept. 1969 started out in deck division and under the leadership of BM1 Charlie Lathower became BM3 and coxswain of the Captain's gig thanks to Keith Senska who had me on board the gig as his bow hook. Also ran the port winch during off loading and the stern anchor winch when making a beach landing. Had a great time while on the TC Hope to see some of my ship mates at the reunion.

Comments:Appreciate the call from Clovis. Always good to hear from old shipmates. Brings back a lot of good memories. I was only aboard from March to December '70. Some of the things that come mind were, the loading of causeways, fueling MSOs on the way back to the states, steaming up Tokyo Wan in heavy traffic, being stuck on the ramp in Danang, and one of the most meaningful events was flying out to the ship from a rice paddy in Southern Viet Nam. Oh yea, running the LCVP in Yokosuka harbor (the boat crew didn't seem too impressed with my boat handling skills). I transferred off when we arrived in Bremerton and went to my first shore duty in Alameda thanks to the persistence of the XO. Terrell County was a fine ship with a fine crew and I was proud to be a part of it. Smooth sailing, BM1 Young

Our homeport was San Diego. A few days ago I received a call from Clovis Long inquiring about my stay on the Terrell County. What a suprise after leaving the ship in January 1960 (51) years to hear of a Terrell Counnty Reunion. I am definitely interested in attending the Reunion in Oct. I don't know if any of my shipmates would be attending. Would like to hear from anyone who served on the Terrell from 1956-1960. Its been a long time but it was a very good time. Please E-Mail me if you can.Hope to hear from anyone.

Hello to all,

I came aboard in Aug '63 as a Seaman and left in July '65 as an RM3. I was in morse code school at Yokosuka as a TDY when Kennedy was killed, but came back aboard and made several trips around WestPac. Dennis O'Leary RM1 and P.L. Kennedy RM2 were the senior Radiomen when I got assigned to Radio to sweep and make coffee, and Kenneth Mimms, RM1 was in charge when I was transferred to Beachmaster Unit 1. I am eager to attend the reunion and see some old shipmates but will be solo, my wife of 44 years passed away in November, 2010.

Please, by all means lets keep this comaraddee and line of comunication going for as long a posible. We have all worked very hard to get where we are now and it looks like all the work is paying off. It all started with George O"Connell starting the ball rolling and started this website and orchastrated our very first reunion I think it was 6 years ago. The first reunion had about 6 or 7 people that came that first year. George correct me if I am wrong on these numbers. From there our website has grown in leaps and bounds. Our reunions have grown to 50 to 55 couples and growing each year. This may be one of our biggest reunions ever shipmates. Just wanted to let all the new shipmated coming to the reunion this year for the first time to bring your old scrap books with all of your old pictures. Everyone likes to look at them and compare pictures and different events corresponding to the pictures. Pleasse bring your wives as they are a key part our our organization. And plan on haveing the time of your life seeing and talking to your old sea buddies. Can not wait to see you all there. Phil Vaccaro BM3

Comments:Hello Terrell County Shipmates. Makes me feel great all over seeing all the new shipmates signing on the website. The most action that we have had in a long time. So wonderful to see so many new shipmates signing on each week and month. Our goal is to eventually find as many if not all of the great sailors who served aboard the Terrell County LST 1157. The numbers keep adding up each year not only on our TC website but at our annual reunions that we hold each year. Who would have ever believed that after 40 years of hardly no contact that now we are alctually communicating via e-mails and are actually seeing fellow shipmates face to face at our yearly reunions. Shipmates, it does not get any better than that if you know what I mean. Lets all help to keep the search on for shipmates that have not been located and find them and to let them know that the Terrell County and its crew is still a very dedicated orginaziation of shipmates dedicaated to finding and reaching out to all of The Terrell County LST 1157 shipmates and sailors who serrved aboard her. Bigger thrill was to follow when we got the news that we would be leaving ComPhibGroup 3 and would become the flagship for LanShipRon 9. Sailing to our new homeport of Yokosuka, Japan along with our sister ships was a cruise worth remembering. I would later serve on the USS Matthews AKA-96, the USS Kitty Hawk CVA-63 and IUWG-1-3 (Inshore Undersea Warfare Group) in Qui Nhon, RVN as a patrol craft commander. A special BRAVO ZULU to all who served with LanShipRon 9. My hometown is San Antonio Tx.

THANKS for tracking me down! I served aboard TC in 1967. I'd just turned 18 and learned a lot that year. I was a deck-ape under BM1 Charlie Lathower and mess cooked for variety & culture.
RDC Richard Ross gave me a phone-talker's job in CIC for GQ and I started standing QMOW/ui with Dave Buderbaugh. Eventually the XO-Navigator, Lt. Fabac let me strike for Quartermaster and life improved dramatically, 'till I got orders to USS OGDEN.
I'm looking forward to seeing you guys in Branson and will try to scare up a few additional shipmates from that era.

Reported abd as a fresh-caught ENS by way of OCS. First of six RVN campaigns was to DaNang before a yard period in '65. Deck Dept for my tour included 1st & 2nd Divisions and Gunnery. OOD at Q'Deck in Sasebo when RM brought msg of Kennedy's assasination. Good to see responses by Homer Smith (Roomie in "Boys Town") amd Bill Mauser -- Bill last heard from by bridge to bridge phone when his ship came alongside "my" AO for unrep in 1966.

Former GM striker (in my time) Bill McKee (sp?) (living in Texas) contacted me a few years back, but I was not much help. Ed Quade (Ops) lives out west, Jim DeBie (sp?)(Engineering) lives in CA, Bob Stevely (XO) is in SDIEGO, around the Christmas holidays in 1976 spoke briefly with Jim Allen (CO) in a department store in Tysons Corner, VA.

For a while it was slow as molasses. This is a wonderful thing that is happening. More shipmates are realizing that we have a great website and that the the crew of the Terrell County is reaching out to find each and everyone of her shipmates that served aboard her. We not only have a great website (guestbook) where we can email and stay in contact so to speak, but we have a Great Reunion each year where we can all gather and see and talk to another after 40 years of being seperated. My dear brothers and shipmates that is a true blessing and a wonderful opportunty that other ships do not have. Paul Reggie, so glad to see that you signed in. Dan Murray, I still remenber you and I am truly looking forward to seeing and talking to you in Branson. For eery new shipmate that has recently signed on , I want to invite each and everyone of you to come to our reunion this coming October. PS I am still looking for general plans of an 1156 class T. I want to build my own model of the TC... Anyone have plans they want to loan out? I can make great copies...

You must think that we are getting younger by the day instead of getting older and uglier. I must say that that wae are not at that stage of life just yet and we still have some good years left ahead of us to all get together and rehash our great years aboard the Terrell County and all the great times we all had together. You and Bill Enderland are the most "Hardheaded" to get through but at least you have signed on to our website so that is a great breakthrough and we will forgive you. We dearly love you and miss you at our yearly reunions. We have talked about you through our last 4 reunions and were wondering if you would ever come to celebrate with us. I am surely hoping that this will be the year as there is a lot of shipmates that would love to see you once again. I have been to the last5 reunions and would not miss one for the world. And I can assure you that is you come this year that you will probably feel the same. by the way, I am Phil Vaccaro BM3, the old fart that spent many a day with you in deck department and on different lilberities. Amos was a plank holder of the TC and then returned for more service on the TC. From what I have heard from other shipmates who served with Amos one could have not found a better shipmate. Amos and Gertrude was the couple who always bought the peanuts to the reunions. Amos will be missed.

Comments:Tim its was felt by the reunion attendees that beings no one from California attends the reunions in our part of the country why would we want to go to California. It was felt that if Calif. wants to host a reunion it would be real nice if they would at least attend a couple reunions to know what goes on at one. The attendees from the past reunions have invested way too much to gamble it all away not knowing what and who would even make the plans. We understand that you guys would like to have a reunion in the western United States but please look at our side of the coin. We probably would came to your party if you would only attend ours. It takes comments and thus far we haven't received any. The real sad thing is that we're all getting older and thus our days for reunions is growing shorter.

Also, many thanks to all who attended for without the excellent attendance the reunions wouldn't be much fun. For all you shipmates from the west coast you will never know what your missing. For the year 2011 we voted to change our location to Branson, Missouri. For 2012 we're planning to go to New Orleans probably in the month of October. For all who are interested in reunions keep checking into this site for as soon as possible information will be coming. For thing for sure the reunions are getting better every year. Comments:They are coming in from all over the country, South Dakota, Iowa, Washington, Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Illinois, Missouri etc. to be reunited once again at our up coming USS Terrell County reunion in San Antonio Texas at the end of September. We came from all different parts of the country, were sent overseas to a war zone and were assigned to our mother ship, the USS TERRELL COUNTY LST 1157. We all worked togerher, ate together, fought together, went on liberty togther, sweated together, prayed together, and survived some of the most treacherous seas together. We bonded and became best of friends and blood brothers together and now some 40 years later we are reuniting once again at one of our reunions . A homecoming once again of some great and wonderful shipmates. We are looking forward to a great time as usual and Melanie and I cannot wait to see everyone once again. For all of you that could not make it this year, I am so sorry. Hoping that you all can make it next year so that we will be able to see you all once again. Comments:Shipmates: For all of you that has waited till the last minute to register or for all of you all that has never been to a reunion it is not too late to sign up. There is a special discount price fr all of those that sign up early and that discount price is still good for a while. Please get those reservations in so that you all can come and celebrate with your old Terrell County Family and frienss. Come have a cold one a reminess of the good old days in Yokouska Japan, Hong Kong China, Thiland, and my favorite-- Subic Bay In the Phillipines. There are countless stories to be told by each and everyone of us and our experiences at sea. The beautiful calm days so sailing with the flying fish taking off in every direation and also the treacherous days at sea taking 45 degree rolls in those terrible typhoons that we got stranded in. Who could forget an experience like that. The stories are just a part of our reunion. The real experience is to be reuniting together once again with some of your old shipmates and buddes. The guys that you always wanted to see again some day and touch base with and and see just how they all farad out in life. Where they live and what they are doing today. Getting back with the guys that you lived with for two years aboard our mother ship the USS Terrell County LST 1157. Who can forget her. She housed and fed and bathed all of us until our tours were over. She brought us to a war zone, brought us through some terrible typhoons, brought us to different wonderful countries and ports of call. But most of all she brought us back to port each time safe and sound and returned all of us back safely to our famalies in the USA. This is a time to celebrate serving our country with all the guys that you lived with, worked with, went to war with, went on liberty with, and the guys that had your back each and every day and watched over you and protected you. Please take this opportunity to sign up for our Terrell County family reunion in September in San Antonio Texas. I promise you that this will be an opportunity and a life experience that you will never forget. Looking forward to seeing each and everyone of you that decides to come. All it takes is a phine call.
