Comments:Horrors! Like many shipyard contracts things change. The LCVP's for Georges LST will not arrive at the 'shipyard' until early January 2014. This late delivery (by an outside contractor) of equipment will delay the commissioning of George's LST 1157 model.

Merry Christmas

Happy New Year

Stay healthy and remember your family and our shipmates past and present. We are an ever shrinking brotherhood of Veteran's that helped to serve and protect the country and the world against many a foe in good times as well as bad.

In years past you heard the phrase "Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Freedom" This pertains to times past and to present. One can hope we can share this mindset with younger generations.

Again - Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New year.

Comments:Progress Report - The model of the Terrell Maru for George is still in the builders yard (My workbench aka The Shipyard) and is beginning to really look like an LST. With three hulls (2 of the 1157 and 1 of the 1169)of the 1156 under construction we are pushing for deliveries by Christmas. It may be close but the effort is moving forward despite all the family demands during this time of year.

Replacing my camera this week so until then there are no pictures,

Comments:Several subjects:
1 - Georges LST 1157 model - Progress slowed a little due to a minor cut with a very sharp saw... Healing well and expect to have the shipyard in full swing by mid-week. Dave Beeckman 'offered' to be the FT on his model. He can start by doing the Mid-Watch in After Steering.....

2- Model for 2014 reunion - Willing and able (as long as I do not cut my fingers or hands off) to build another as well as donating it.

3 - Building a larger model of the Washtenaw that is 5.3" wide and 36.9" long. When completed its new homeport will be in the LA area.

4 - Some of my ships plan inventory includes the following:
Original Blue Prints (copied) for LST 42 dated 1942
Original Blue Prints (copied) for the LCVP
Drawings for the 1156 Class LSTs
Drawings for the 1171 Class LSTs
(New -->) Drawings for the 1179 class LSTs.

Happy building days are ahead. If I get much more insane I'll build all 4 classes of the LST's and 'invade' some enemy held island.

May all of you and your families enjoy a great Thanksgiving.

The 2013 reunion in Washington D.C. went surprising well considering we were there during the government shutdown, we were able to get down to the Vietnam Wall Memorial and tour Arlington National Cemetery plus a few other places. Hope to see everyone in St. Charles next Sept.

My intentions are to be at the 2014 reunion (Good Lord willin') and another model will be offered to the committee to do with it as they please... Who knows, if you show up in St Louis and bid you may have a model of a good, hard working LST.

Have a great day and enjoy the upcoming holidays.

Comments:Week 2 of Georges LST - Progress Report: Aft section of the Main Deck (from the open Cargo Hatch and then aft) is secured in place with the main body of the superstructure ready for attachment. Once in place the 03 Level and above will be added. At the Bow we are refining the area to permit adding of the Bow Ramp and Bow Doors. The progress is on track for a mid - December delivery.

The shipyard is currently building 3 of the 1156 class LSTs and two of the Type II (WWII era) LSTs. With the recent delivery of plans for the 1179 class LST we hope to start one after Christmas for the 1185's reunion.

Comments:LST for George O Connell - its a Go! 'NAVSEA' OK'd the construction.

So, The shipyard has been busy working on Georges model of the Terrell County. With the hull built up to the Tank Deck we are now working on the crew and troop berthing areas (the sides) by Friday we will be up to the Main Deck. Of course the Bow and Fantail still will need lots of work before we can start on Mounts 31 and 32. The superstructure will then be worked on. Next week I'll have photos I'll be sending to George. If anyone want to receive the photos each week, send me an email. The model should be at Georges home in time for a Ships Company Christmas Party. I am sure he will find an appropriate shelf for this 3.4" X 24" long model of a ship he has feelings for.

Phillip 'won' the model of the TC at this years reunion. (well deserved) With my plans to move to the Ozarks early next year I plan on being at the 2014 reunion as the Good Lord allows. I still plan on donating a 28.8" long model ... just like the one Phil won... along with two or three other models of the TC. At a scale of 1:192 they will be only 3.4" X 24" in overall measurements. The intent is to offer these for sale to any of the assembled TC shipmates. A portion of the proceeds will go to the TC's treasury. The remainder will go into the "kitty" to build other models for other reunions. (FYI I offer models to about three or four groups each year.)

New subject: George hauled the freight on getting the TC Association going. How do you feel about George receiving a gift for his years of effort? E- mail me your inputs at jascraven@gmail.com.

Have a great holiday season or Merry Christmas to all.

I came back in as a BM2 in 94. spent time in SBU11 and was sent to Panama on a op that has still not been de-classified. Then I went to MIUWU 103 where I made 1st class and was deployed to Quatar and we worked out of the Embassy there. Then I transferred to IBU 17 which is where I made put on my anchors and was sent to Guam for 6mo training up a boat unit there and came back to San Diego and took over as the Operations Officer for the Naval Boat Police then was recalled back to IBU17 an was sent to the gulf. Spent time in Iraq and Kuwait. Then the company was working for transferred me to Washington and I transferred to CHB5. This was suppose to be my twilight cruise an ended up going back to Iraq and Kuwait with them. I retired from the Navy in 2009 and retired from my job last year. Looking forward to hearing from all of you. I keep in touch with Dave all the time.

Comments:Was a non-paying "guest" (Marine) aboard the Terrel County in November, 1966 enroute from Okinawa to Chu Lai, RVN. We ran into a typhoon and spent a few days bouncing around. I can still remember the sound of the screw coming out of the water just before we banged down into the next wave. We were a sick bunch of jarheads below deck. We'd brace against the bulkhead as we wound our way to the mess deck...only to abandon it all in a rush to the head. Ate soda crackers most of the time. After a few days of that, we were ready to surrender to anyone who'd get us ashore! Anyway...you Sailors got us there in one piece. God Bless and enjoy your reunion!

Departing the main Phoenix POST OFFICE is a box 12" X 12" X 36" comtaining a model of the Terrell County. The model is like the one that attended the 2011 Branson Reunion. Made of Cedar and other woods she will sit in someones home after the reunion in New Orleans.

Bow Doors open, Bow Ramp, Vehicle Ramp and Turn Taable all are in working order.

We LST SAILORS are few in number so who ever wins this model has the 'responsibility' to share his stories with others about his time aboard her. Keep the history alive.

Wish I could be there.

Comments:Hello Terrell County Shipmates; Have been laying low and keeping quiet but now it is time to say a few words of wisdom. ha ha Only 6 months left till we all get together once again for our yearly reunion in New Orleans. The response has been been great for everyone that has made their reservations early. As you know, the more people that sign up early and the greater the numbers, the more Melanie and can bargain for better Hotel prices. So please, if you plan on coming to New Orleans in October get them reservations made as early as you possibly can. Have a lot of new shipmates that are coming for the first time this year. Realy looking forwrd to seeing and talking to them. Have a lot of surprises in for the shipmates this year. Jim Craven has a wonderful surprise he will share with all of us but you have to come to find out what the surprise is. I know but I am sworn to secretsey. From all of the emails that I am receiving, we should have a huge turn out at our 2012 reuion. I am just hoping that the darn gas prices does not affect the pocket books and keep shipmates from coming this year. I truly belileve that even with the higher gas prices and higher airlilne tickets, this event is something you will not want to miss. Being together with most of your fellow shipmates will surely be worth it. We will all have a wonderful time together as we do each and every year that we get together. Make your reservations and lets make this one of the biggest reunions ever. See you all in October. PHIL BM#

Comments:For those shipmates who have made reservations .. Great! You will have a surprise to share with your brides and shipmates. For those who are still waiting…. Well you are going to miss an opportunity that may not come again. You may ask about my reservation…. Well I have plans to be there. Due to a very complicated travel scheme I am plotting my safe course from Arizona (Home-Phoenix) to New Jersey (kids & grand kids) to North Carolina (kids & grand kids), to Missouri(USLST Convention), to Louisiana (Terrell Maru Reunion), to California (LSR9 Reunion) and back to Arizona (Home) …. And rest … after driving some 7,500 miles. Being the only helmsman, it will take at least a month to complete this voyage. In the event The Good Lord deems otherwise I then have plans to be there in spirit.
Watch for upcoming news of the surprise. I can’t tell you yet but I know you will enjoy it and want it. If you are not there you will really regret missing the surprise.

PS. Someone threatened to take my Liberty Card away if I tell what the secret is.

Comments:My father-in-law Edward J. Cackoski (Ski) commissioned the LST 1157 from Bath Main and served a tour on it in the Bikini islands during the nuclear testing.

I actually have his "Plank Owner" Certificate from March 14, 1953 signed by L Reynolds framed on my wall. I have also heard many stories (over and over again) of his adventures at sea, the strange habits of the natives they evacuated, the good taste of fresh coconut milk and the bad taste of the warm beer with formaldehyde. I also have some inside information on some bicycles that "inexplicably" appeared on deck one day after they had left port.

Edward passed away recently and the Navy was present during the funeral which was very moving and appreciated. He was a wonderful and giving person who served his family, church and community very generously until his last day. I am glad to see his name listed here.

Thank you again for this web site. I am sure the rest of the family will appreciate it as much as I do.

If you knew Ed, Id love to hear from you.

Best wishes,

Robb Miller

I thought I had a 9.5 hour drive home but it turned out to be an 11 hour drive. But it was well worth the drive to be able to see the shipmates again and to see all of the new shipmates who attended this year was fantastic. The brotherhood of the shipmates is just as strong today as it was 43 years ago in Yokuska Japan and Viet Nam. Thanks to the great job Clovis and Deb Long and Bud and Sally Hamilton did in Branson. Deb and I would like to Thank everyone that came this year for attending, A special Thanks goes to Bud and Sally Hamilton for helping us getting it set up. We had quite a few that this was their first time at a reunion and hopefully they will be attending future ones. And to all those that come every year, What can I say but We Love Ya and will see you next year. Comments:Deck "Apes"... well we needed someone to do the dirty work.

BM1 Tredwell saw the light and let go of my warm body. Got up to the Bridge and liked looking down on the main deck.... It wasn't always nice or easy but it was lots better then working on deck or down with the 'snipes'...

So the 'Ops Pukes' were and are the best.

The model of 1157, though not fully completed, will be my representative at the reunion.

Do a toast to all the TC crew past, absent and present at the reunion. Next year the US LST Association may return to Branson for its September 2012 Convention. Come join us and meet some real live heroes... The LST Sailors that landed troops on the enemy beaches. Many of these men made numerous trips to the Normandy Beachhead to keep the troops and equipment flowing. Many more were doing the same tasks in the Pacific as we closed in on Japan's islands...

Enjoy the reunion and hopefully in 2012 I'll be there.

Comments:Shipmates: Lets have a show of emails showing what department will have the most crewmembers attending the reunion this year in Branson and the one in 2012 in New Orleans. Will it the oil smelling snipes, the sweaty dechapes, the stinky skivey waivers, the nose in the air quarter masters, the road kill cooks or anyother department that I may have overlooked. I reallly think that the deck apes the BM's will have the largest amount of shipmates attending because deck apes are the backbone of the Navy. Do you agree with me. I will be attending the Branson reunion and I will be hosting the New Orleans Reunion. Lets hear from the rest of you shipmates and your plans for this reunion and the one next year. I'LL bet I have more response from the wonderful deck apes than any other department. Waiting to hear from each and every one of you. Phil BM3

With all of the modern tecknoligies that they have these days with U tube and Smart phones etc, I thought that one of you all out there with a lot of experience with these modern marvels could find a way to locate these two gentlemen. If so, please give them both my phone number and tell them to give me a call. Phone number 504 456 2075. Thanks so much .Phil Vaccaro BM3

Comments:Shipmates: Well god buddies, its time for all of you last minute procrastinators to get busy and sigh up for the upcoming reunion in Branson in October. All of us are getting up in age and we do not know how many more years that we will be able to continue this wonderful opportunity in our lives. We lost 40 years in the making nor realizing how important is was for all of us to get back together. Now that we have a dedicated crew of shipmates that are committed to making this happen each and every year, the only thing that you have to do is to come and have the greatest time of your life. You know that you always wondered how your buddies made out, how they are doing these days, what they look like, if they have changed Etc. Well shipmates I can tell you that we may have gotten older and fatter and grayer on the tops we have not changed all the much. The faces are basically the same, the characters are still the same, the gestures and facial expressions are still the same, the mannerisms are the same and the voices are still the same. But most of all the loyalty to our Country and to our great ship (THE USS TERRELL COUNTY LST 1157) is still the same. The loyalty to one another that served is still the same also. So shipmates, please do not delay or put it off any longer. Make sure that that this is the year that you are going to come and see for yourself if what I am saying is true. I promise you that it will be an event that will stay in your mind for the rest of you lives. Sigh up and come see for yourself. Hope to see and talk to you all there. Phil BM3

Comments:Hello to all of my fellow shipmates of the Terrell County. Hoping that you all are copeing will with the terrible winters that just passed in the northern part of the country and the torrid heat wave that we are having across the country right now. Not to mention the horrific tornadoes that did damage to our neighbors across the country. There has got to be some good news somewhere my friends. Well the good news is our upcoming reunion in Branson Missouri in October. A place to come and socalize with the brave men that sailed the high seas with you. The ones that were in the war zones with you, the one's that went through typhoones with you, the ones that went on your liberty with you, the one's that had your back through thick and thin no matter what happened at sea or on land. That's your fellow shipmates and blood brothers of the Terrell County LST 1157. You have the opportunity to relax and have the best time of your lives just relaxing and talking face to face with shipmates that you have not seen in the last 40 plus years. You have the opportunity to rehash old sea stories with the same shipmates that lived on the same exact ship that you served on. You get to see how they all faired in life and most to all you get to meet their wives. The reunions keep on getting bigger and better every year my friends. Sign up and come to Branson and relax your minds for a few days with some of the best friends and buddies that youever had in a life time. The U in reUnion means YOU my dear friend Let this be the year that you decide to come and get re-aquainted with your old sea buddies. I promise you if you come you will not regreat it. It will surely be the most memorable and heart warming trip that you will never forget. Hope to see you there. Your buddy Phil Vaccaro BM3

Comments:I was aboard the Terrell Maru from the Fall of 1963 to the Fall of 1965. As my first ship to start a 25 year run with the Navy. Served aboard 1157, 1185, 1183 and 1187 during 19 years at sea out of 25. Made QMC in 72. "Ticked off" the CNO in 75 and finally Retired in 1987 as a QMC(SW).

Sadly, I will not be at thus years reunion but I am loaning the event a scale model of the 1157. It will be nearly finished and will be returned to me after the reunion for completion. I have about 160 hours into it already wiht about the same to go until she is RFS (ready for sea).

This model is made of Popular, Bass and Balsa woods and it measures 4.1" wide by 28.8" long. For any critics , well help me find better plans for the ship so I may do a more accurate job of building the Terrell Maru.

The Main Deck (midships) is removeable so the Tank Deck and Turn Table are viewable. Vehicle Ramp goes up and down with a little help. Because of the scale (1:160) the Bow Doors are fixed in the open position with the Bow Ramp down.

Good Lord Willin and the Creek Don't Rise I'll be at the next reunion.

Good night and stay cooll

I was on board form Jan.1967 to Sept. 1969 started out in deck division and under the leadership of BM1 Charlie Lathower became BM3 and coxswain of the Captain's gig thanks to Keith Senska who had me on board the gig as his bow hook. Also ran the port winch during off loading and the stern anchor winch when making a beach landing. Had a great time while on the TC Hope to see some of my ship mates at the reunion.

Comments:Appreciate the call from Clovis. Always good to hear from old shipmates. Brings back a lot of good memories. I was only aboard from March to December '70. Some of the things that come mind were, the loading of causeways, fueling MSOs on the way back to the states, steaming up Tokyo Wan in heavy traffic, being stuck on the ramp in Danang, and one of the most meaningful events was flying out to the ship from a rice paddy in Southern Viet Nam. Oh yea, running the LCVP in Yokosuka harbor (the boat crew didn't seem too impressed with my boat handling skills). I transferred off when we arrived in Bremerton and went to my first shore duty in Alameda thanks to the persistence of the XO. Terrell County was a fine ship with a fine crew and I was proud to be a part of it. Smooth sailing, BM1 Young

Our homeport was San Diego. A few days ago I received a call from Clovis Long inquiring about my stay on the Terrell County. What a suprise after leaving the ship in January 1960 (51) years to hear of a Terrell Counnty Reunion. I am definitely interested in attending the Reunion in Oct. I don't know if any of my shipmates would be attending. Would like to hear from anyone who served on the Terrell from 1956-1960. Its been a long time but it was a very good time. Hello to all,

I came aboard in Aug '63 as a Seaman and left in July '65 as an RM3. I was in morse code school at Yokosuka as a TDY when Kennedy was killed, but came back aboard and made several trips around WestPac. Dennis O'Leary RM1 and P.L. Kennedy RM2 were the senior Radiomen when I got assigned to Radio to sweep and make coffee, and Kenneth Mimms, RM1 was in charge when I was transferred to Beachmaster Unit 1. I am eager to attend the reunion and see some old shipmates but will be solo, my wife of 44 years passed away in November, 2010.

Comments:Terrell County Shipmates; I am so amased with the responce that we are getting on this webiste lately. This is just increadable. Please, by all means lets keep this comaraddee and line of comunication going for as long a posible. We have all worked very hard to get where we are now and it looks like all the work is paying off. It all started with George O"Connell starting the ball rolling and started this website and orchastrated our very first reunion I think it was 6 years ago. The first reunion had about 6 or 7 people that came that first year. George correct me if I am wrong on these numbers. From there our website has grown in leaps and bounds. Our reunions have grown to 50 to 55 couples and growing each year. This may be one of our biggest reunions ever shipmates. Just wanted to let all the new shipmated coming to the reunion this year for the first time to bring your old scrap books with all of your old pictures. Everyone likes to look at them and compare pictures and different events corresponding to the pictures. Pleasse bring your wives as they are a key part our our organization. And plan on haveing the time of your life seeing and talking to your old sea buddies. Can not wait to see you all there. Phil Vaccaro BM3

Comments:Hello Terrell County Shipmates. Makes me feel great all over seeing all the new shipmates signing on the website. The most action that we have had in a long time. So wonderful to see so many new shipmates signing on each week and month. Our goal is to eventually find as many if not all of the great sailors who served aboard the Terrell County LST 1157. The numbers keep adding up each year not only on our TC website but at our annual reunions that we hold each year. Who would have ever believed that after 40 years of hardly no contact that now we are alctually communicating via e-mails and are actually seeing fellow shipmates face to face at our yearly reunions. Shipmates, it does not get any better than that if you know what I mean. Lets all help to keep the search on for shipmates that have not been located and find them and to let them know that the Terrell County and its crew is still a very dedicated orginaziation of shipmates dedicaated to finding and reaching out to all of The Terrell County LST 1157 shipmates and sailors who serrved aboard her. Bigger thrill was to follow when we got the news that we would be leaving ComPhibGroup 3 and would become the flagship for LanShipRon 9. Sailing to our new homeport of Yokosuka, Japan along with our sister ships was a cruise worth remembering. I would later serve on the USS Matthews AKA-96, the USS Kitty Hawk CVA-63 and IUWG-1-3 (Inshore Undersea Warfare Group) in Qui Nhon, RVN as a patrol craft commander. A special BRAVO ZULU to all who served with LanShipRon 9. My hometown is San Antonio Tx.

THANKS for tracking me down! I served aboard TC in 1967. I'd just turned 18 and learned a lot that year. I was a deck-ape under BM1 Charlie Lathower and mess cooked for variety & culture.
RDC Richard Ross gave me a phone-talker's job in CIC for GQ and I started standing QMOW/ui with Dave Buderbaugh. Eventually the XO-Navigator, Lt. Fabac let me strike for Quartermaster and life improved dramatically, 'till I got orders to USS OGDEN.
I'm looking forward to seeing you guys in Branson and will try to scare up a few additional shipmates from that era.

Reported abd as a fresh-caught ENS by way of OCS. First of six RVN campaigns was to DaNang before a yard period in '65. Deck Dept for my tour included 1st & 2nd Divisions and Gunnery. OOD at Q'Deck in Sasebo when RM brought msg of Kennedy's assasination. Good to see responses by Homer Smith (Roomie in "Boys Town") amd Bill Mauser -- Bill last heard from by bridge to bridge phone when his ship came alongside "my" AO for unrep in 1966.

Former GM striker (in my time) Bill McKee (sp?) (living in Texas) contacted me a few years back, but I was not much help. Ed Quade (Ops) lives out west, Jim DeBie (sp?)(Engineering) lives in CA, Bob Stevely (XO) is in SDIEGO, around the Christmas holidays in 1976 spoke briefly with Jim Allen (CO) in a department store in Tysons Corner, VA.
