Hi All, I've just discovered this site and thought that perhaps someone else reading it could help me. I'm looking for my GGGGrandparents. My GGGrandparents were JOHN HODGE=MARGARET MITCHELL on 25th July 1830 at St Ninians Stirling.John was 46yrs at the time of the 1851 census. I've found a JOHN HODGE born 8th Oct 1804 to ALEXANDER HODGE and MARGARET ESDON in Stirling, I'm hoping this is a link in my tree but can't be sure. Does anyone know anything about HODGE families from the St Ninians or Clackmannan aeras? Val |

| Comments: | The family of John White emigrated from Stirling to the US in the late 1800's. John was studying to be a baptist minister when he met Abigail McGuire a Catholic girl from England. They married and he in turn became a Catholic. In time, he became the sexton of a small Catholic parish in Stirling and a police officer. He observed the beating of an inmate, and came forward to report the incident. He and his family were not welcomed from then on. I often travel to the UK on business, and I would love to visit Striling within the next year or two. |

| Comments: | Hi Tony. Stephen at instirling.com said to drop you a line. That you were the best person to contact.
I am tracing my family on my mother side, her grandfather was Walter James Shaw, his brother was James Shaw and they were from Slamanan, near Stirling. Confusing? I think the Immigrated in 1880 from Scotland and were Naturalized here in 1885. I have a copy of a ship's manifest with them coming to the US on "The Columbia", 8/14/1904, and it says that they were US citizens then. That ship came from Glasgow. Any help you could give would be so appreciated. Or perhaps you could forward this request to someone who could help? Yours truly, Charlene Stephens Robinson |

My ancestors surname was McCatty (son of Chatton). My ancestor, unknown McCatty, came to America with William Alexander Chatton to help George Washington fight the British. The McCattys were given land in New York or Massachusetts for their part in the War of Independence. I have information back to 1841 when my great grandfather, James Alexander McCatty, was born. |

| Comments: | To Tony Murray:
Hello. Better reintroduce myself. We met in May in the Guildhall. I am a friend of John Sands. We discussed the Tinman family. I have been meaning to write to you ever since, but have had too many distractions (moving house, birth of grandson) to search for my notes on the family. However it is my main New Year resolution to discover which of many boxes they are stored in. One windfall from moving was discovery of a note made 30 years ago that my aunt said my grandmother, Agnes Tinman, was born in Illinois City, Ill. The place no longer exists, but was in a coalmining district, which makes sense, as her father and his brothers were all miners. The family emigrated prior to 1880. My grandmother and one sister were born there and then the family returned to Scotland, to Midlothian. Best wishes of the season Falconer Henry Victoria, Canada |

My g-g-grandfather, WILLIAM McLUCKIE, was born in Kippen, Stirling in l797 he left Scotland in l8l7 for South Africa. There are areas in South Africa where he was the first white man to be seen by the tribes. He married ELIZABETH WARD (l820 Irish settlers) around l840. If anyone has any details on this family, I would really appreciate any details. According to the family Bible his father was Andrew McLuckie and his mother Jean Meffin. Loved looking at your website just wish there were more photos of old buildings. I often read about churches or monuments and wonder if my g-g-g-grandfather saw what I am reading about...Keep up the good work. Delva |
