She would have a powerful impact... Jerry Berberet of Assoc. of New American Colleges. With high hopes you would like to schedule a keynote/talk/workshop, I attach and copy below more information, Cathy Bao Bean Author of The Chopsticks-Fork Principle, A Memoir and Manual www.cathybaobean.com 357 Route 661, Blairstown, NJ 07825 908-852-7426 I talk about “Americanizing” by “Acting More Like An Immigrant” and finding the culturally extraordinary in the ordinary events. For me, my (extra)ordinary began in earnest when I was asked by the director of the Tufts Arena Theater, “But do you think a Chinese can play a Jew from Amsterdam?” and heard Malcolm X tell my roommate she was no longer a “Negro.” A few years later, my sister married an ambassador but I got me an artist who painted the lawn. And then I became a Feminist before I knew I was a Chinese-American when the chairperson heard me decline the “honor” of making curtains for the philosophy department office. By the time I was a mother, I wondered if raising our Asian-Caucasian son would be impossibly or merely exponentially more complicated than the hybrid corn in the garden. And then he spent his Junior year in Taiwan – to my mother’s delight until he was plastered all over Taipei in mod Levi’s ads. With delight and good humor, I cross disciplines and encourage people to revel in the playgrounds and minefields of being at least bi-cultural (by ethnicity, gender, generation, etc.). In doing so, I shatter stereotypes but explain the generalizations through personal stories about ordinary events which raise extraordinary cultural questions – like: Can the Tooth Fairy survive the Melting Pot? Can you fail or succeed simultaneously in two cultures? What does "belief" have to do with what's "right"? What happens when you have a sub-conscious but your parents don’t? How does the concept of Self morph from a North American modern to the Traditional? How do you say ‘I love you’ in America? In Asia? Is “resolving” mother-daughter relationships an over-rated goal? Since publication, I have been the keynoter at: Mary Edwards Lecture, SUNY Purchase Workforce Diversity Web biennial conference, Rochester, NY Hampton University Honors Banquet , VA The Diversity Leadership Forum annual conference, Miami, FL George Mason University Vision Awards banquet, Fairfax, VA Organization of Chinese Americans NJ, Annual Gala. Quoting Barry Qualls, Dean of Humanities at Rutgers: “You were fabulous--to hear someone actually talk about the use of stereotypes; about the ways we live; about REAL multiculturalism .” Quoting myself: The Politically Correct may have thrown out the “melting pot,” and replaced it with “tossed salad and dressing” or “smorgasbord” but, in their recommendations for society’s diet, the menus never explain how we individual ingredients are to be grown and prepared. Quoting Irene Kim, writing in Jade Magazine: When I was younger, I used to carry around a notebook entitled Notes to myself in Twenty Years. The idea behind it was to list out the things that my parents did to me that made me mad so I could teach myself how to parent from a kid's perspective.... Unfortunately, I didn't build on this list and my instructional memo is not much help to me now. Fortunately, Cathy Bao Bean expands upon and embraces this idea in her wonderful book The Chopstick-Fork Principle: A Memoir and a Manual Her honest, hilarious, and articulate novel is indeed a manual that is both incredibly personal and widely applicable to a wider audience. Other colleagues wrote for the back cover: “Zany, moving, hilarious, and deep--not infrequently all at once Cathy Bao Bean gives us a rollicking tour of the Bean method of merging work and play while negotiating cultural and generational divides to create a daily life far richer than its original constituent parts. As Cathy the Chinese Confucian philosophy professor declares war on mice, Bennett the Caucasian artist from mid-America announces “his increasing respect for all sentient beings.” As he discovers more of his Buddhist nature, she becomes “more and more like Shiva, ‘The Destroyer.’” Bennett designs a kitchen, Cathy notices that he’s neglected to include a stove, leaving their son William to rebel against his hippie parents by dressing like his father only on Halloween. Cathy Bao Bean has written a tart, feisty, whimsical, and penetrating saga of the family that invented the Chopsticks-Fork Principle and then proceeded to live by it. No reader can leave this book satisfied with the relatively staid life he or she had on opening it.” Celia Morris, author of Fanny Wright: Rebel in America and Finding Celia's Place “This book does for the mind what "sweet and sour" does for the palate. It is spicy and poignant, it takes your breath away and leaves you hungering for more.” Carol R. Ochs, author of Our Lives as Torah, “…Bao Bean's postwar adventures evoke the America of Breakfast at Tiffany's and Auntie Mame. If these stories...remind us of nothing so much as the picaresque, we remember that the picaresque is the single most characteristic genre of postwar literature.” Ralph V. Norman, editor of Soundings, An Interdisciplinary Journal “Cathy Bao Bean writes as she speaks--with verve, flair, and bounce. Anyone with half an ear and one good eye will enjoy reading this book.” Merrill Maguire Skaggs, Baldwin Professor of Humanities, Drew University For more information about the husband/artist whose work is in all the major NJ museums and others, including the Whitney Museum of American Art in NY, the Newark Museum, the Cincinnati Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, The Smithsonian Institute, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, please visit www.bennettbean.com |

“Runway Peace Project” FASHION SHOW DESIGNER AND MODEL CALL OUT Are you the next hot politically aware designer? Do you want an opportunity to create your own design? Do you want to feature someone else’s? Do you like modeling? Do you want to feature something you already own or a local designer as connected to the theme? Put the sewing machine pedal to the metal and join the Runway Peace Project - Fashion Show Women of all ethnicities, races, ages, sizes, abilities, and backgrounds are encouraged to apply! > Deadline is February 12< Project background: Over the past years “Women Speak Out Project” has brought together artists, activists and women’s rights advocates to expand on a variety of topics as Women of the World Imagining the Future, Images of Culture and Spirit, and Pioneering the Future. This year’s theme – Women Moving History Forward – will, once again, provoke much thought and insightful dialogues. Students, staff, and community activists will take on the runway and the mic to engage war, peace, militarism, and gender. This Fashion Show is to be informed by a social justice perspective taking into account the status of women across lines of race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, class, sexual orientation, physical ability, and age. Designers are expected to tailor their clothes, jewelry, and panels according to the theme. The Runway Peace Project is an initiative of peace and solidarity at the Women of Color Resource Center brought to NJCU by the Women’s History Month Committee and the Women Speak Out Project. Please check www.coloredgirls.org for more information. |

It is an incredible to not only have the knowledge and power of a University student (and soon to be graduates), but an honor to be a part of this organization....a world movement, positive change, and above all...unconditional love! Remember all the wise words your "elder" sorors have expressed to you, as it will keep you forever motivated and connected to YOUR SORORITY! Thank you for making our dream a reality at another place on this tiny earth. Many lives will be impacted by the Alpha Gamma colonies love and efforts. Hope to meet you all soon!
