Comment: Previous post should be EGAN and humphries which seems to be ONEILL and R1B1C7(R1B1B2e niall modal haplotype). There were 3 sons of neill earl of carrick and one, william, had lands in craigo, angus and we dna to angus and fife so he should be our ancestor, and a neilson of craigcaffie. The strabane tyrone homepage has our ancestor, thomas the signer,as a member and ulster and north ireland dna, plus,a dna study at ftdna has a close match with a oneill royal line and this is good proof we are oneills.Close stuart matches and book referncences make them our cousisns, sorenson dna database. The william, above, has land records in the great seal charter so is reliable with the dna matching. The neilsons were said extinct but are not and they were said to be oneill and both seem true.Close matches in renfrew are close to the stuarts of bute neilsons.Matching book data(and stories)with dna can help define families.

News to me given that I had covered all that area and my grandparents lived at Causewayend insight of the Almond bing. So I started searching for Muiravonside Colliery. I knew the limekilns and old coal working on the Muiravonside Estate, now the Country Park but could not place a name to the coal workings. Anyway the search led me to this site and in conjuction with 6" scale maps I found Muiravonside Colliery. I am amazed at the wealth of knowledge on this site. I have spent hours scanning the site and enjoyed every minute.

Comment: I have traced my GGGG Parents to marriage in 1792 at Muiravonside, namely William Tulloch & Susan Alexander. I have found Susan's Parents but have not been able to confirm John's. I have a hunch he may have come to Polmont area from North Ronaldsay, Orkney Islands. Going by the traditional method of naming offspring his Father would be John & his Mother Christian. Using the I.G.I.the only likely
match is "John Tulloch & Christian Tulloch" who had a son William born 1765 in North Ronaldsay. What I am trying to
establish is if there are any records which mention William's place of birth, eg tombstone, church records, farm
records, rent records or other miscellaneous local records.
He was living in Bennetstown at the time of his son John's
baptism at Muiravonside Church. Any help or suggestions will
be appreciated. Bob Tulloch (aged 76)

Comment: A terrific site. I came here looking for HUNTER ancestors. I have a g-g-g-Grandad, Colin Hunter who on his son's marriage certificate at Kikcolm Wigtownshire in 1871 has the occupation of'HAWKER'. His wife was allegedly Margaret Howard but I have no proof they were even married. I have no idea where Colin was born nor where he went (apart from Wigtownshire-he might even be Irish or English) but I have had a lovely time looking through your amazing pages.Maybe someone out there has a 'travelling' ancestor like me and can help. Thank you for all your hard work.

Your site has helped to provide substance and colour to my researches - thank you.
If anyone can provide any links with the 18th century Adam family in this area I would be very grateful

Comment: I am a great great grandson of William MacFarlane (mentioned as 47yrs old in the 1881 census for Slamannan).I understand that he was born at Wester Auchine (?) Slamannan, I wonder if you can verify the location of this farm? He married in Airdrie, and his son Thomas, my great grandfather, was born at Carserigg (now known as Crossrig). The family then moved to Brownrigg farm (nr Meadowfield) and at the time of the 1881 census, he was farming at Tods Bughts. My great grandfather married and the first farm he took on was Greenhill. The Watts I think were then in Tods Bughts as one of them was a great pal of my great grandfather and indeed was his best man. Great grandpa then moved to Easter Glentore farm, where my granny was born and finally moved to Glenhove, Luggiebank, where he died of pneumonia in 1925. His father retired and built Brownrigg Cottage in Slamannan, which I have yet to see. He remarried after losing his first wife and died round about 1910.
My grandfather on my mother's side was born and raised at Roughrigg where his father was an engine driver on the Monklands railway. One of grandpa's sisters, Lizzie, lived in Slamannan till her last years and another, Jeanie, continued to live at Bankier Place, Roughrigg (house now restored)until her final days. I have really happy memories of visiting Roughrigg and Slamannan in the 1970s and early 80s, with my mum and brothers - we were fed and fed and fed till we were liken to burst, all the nice things kids get when they visit relatives at weekends. Although none of them had palatial living quarters, they had all the love and warmth which I still feel now and their kindnesses are still remembered by me, I only wish I had the knowledge to ask them things; my grandfather remembered coming home with his father one Friday night to Roughrigg (probably during or just after the great war) and hearing drunken men lying in the fields singing away - quite comical I think he'd have found it!
Memories are things to be cherished and I hope this input has shown how valuable sites such as these are for recording past events.

Comment: Thanks for all the work that has gone into the site! All of us obsessed family history nuts know how painstaking it is. (shame about the blatant chinese advertising **** that has sneaked in as a signee in the Guest Book)
My grandmother worked as a nurse in a Larbert Hospital-we have a photo of her in her uniform, probably in her 20's, around 1915??? She was born in Larkhall, but her family, Reid, seem to travel around a bit-her father came from Forfars.
If anyone has any info about the Hospital-we believe was classed as an Asylum, but you weren't necessarily mad, if you get my drift! We would love to know how she ended up there before marrying a sassanach!
Cheers!

Comment: I happened to be looking at some history and found your site. It has been many years since I have been back to Airth, but Nanna still lives in Netherby Road. I still remember our holidays; the General Store she and my Poppa ran on Carronshore Rd, the men who came in for their lunches, the delivery of Iron Brew and even before that, spending one of our first Christamses at their home on Grangemouth Road. My brother and I only visted our Grandparents once a year, but what a time we had! Especially when they lived at South Lodge, at the gates of Airth Castle. We had bikes and rode up to the Castle, fished for flounder and what ever else in the birn. We fell in a few times, much to the disgust of my Grandmother!
One of my Poppa's brother and his wife, Uncle John and Aunt Bella lived on the High Street and we rode there often to visit, riding past the Castle or Mr Hunter "The Game Keeper" on the way! I remember one time we decided to climb into the Castle orchard..what a mistake that was! I'm sure Mr Hunter raised his shotgun to shoot, but only when he realised it was us, did he lower it! I hope so anyway!
There was Uncle Begbie and Aunt Ellen, Uncle Aiken and his wife, Aunty Mary, Uncle Francis and Aunty Isobel, all relatives we visited when we went 'home' I also remember the "Chipper" who came around every night. We'd run out and get the Black Pudding suppers for Dad and Poppa and chips for the rest of us!
I think I've said enough! Thank you for the opportunity to relive some good memories!
I'll be back very soon!

We have no other information to go on, if anyone knows of an Elliott family born living in Stow around 1911, any information would be very much appreciated - if anyone has info on a John Elliot born 14th June 1911 Stow, this would help to locate his parents.
Apart from the above, we no nothing else about the Elliot family from Stow.

Comment: I am looking for family names Cowan, Hardie,I am especially looking for my grandmother's half-sister's family. Her maiden name was Bethia Anderson Cowan, and she married James Gardner. They had five children named Lily (named after my grandmother Lillias Cowan Hardie, who later married Alexander Cockburn), and her mother. Annie, Christina ( who was named after her grandmother and her sister Christina Cowan who emigrated to NY in 1892).I cant't find the piece of paper with Bethia's other children on it. Her mother married my Great g.Father David Hardie and had my Grandmother Lillias Cowan Hardie, William Hardie and Jessie Hardie. We don't know who Bethia and Christina's real father was. My great g. parents lived with Bethia and her husband until they died.

Comment: I was pleased to see the LENATHEN surname as that is my fathers name. I have been trying to sort out his family tree. His fathers name was THOMAS LENATHEN, but that is as far back as I can get. Gdads mothers name was Catherine. She had 5 sons but can find no record of father anywhere. At some point she was a Governess and st another point she was known as MRS DOW as her partner was then JOHN DOW. This was all taking place in the Stirlingshire district.
I remeber being told that Granny DOW was put into the Asylum in her latter years. I am guessing that it was Bellsdyke. That is where she spent her last days and died some time in the 50s or 60s. It is said she came from Newcastle England, and in the family bible there is the name JAMES MCDERMOD under her name. No idea who he was.
I would like to Thank You Mr. Patterson for a very interesting site. All your hard work will not be for naught!
You are a very dedicated person and have made a difference to alot of people.

Comment: I just recently came across your wonderful site. I am descended from William Ure & Mary Bow who were both from Larbert. My mother Catherine Ure was born in Ayr were my grandfather had the Ure Iron Foundary. My g grandfather William Ure died in Larbert 19/4/1859. I have not been able to find when his wife, Christian Gray died. It was after 1841 but before 1851. Most of the Ure's living in Larbert (and also Denny and Falkirk) around this time were descendants of William & Mary. A lot of them were iron founders. Any information anyone has would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
