I remember the Topanga Corral well. It was 1972 and I had just moved to LA from Central California. Fell in lust with a little Topanga cutie named Nikki and spent countless hours enjoying the incredible music from people who either were legends or were well on their way to being legends. It would be fantastic if someone would put together a video of the great days at the corral!

This is for David, from August of 2004. I lived in Topanga from 1968 thru 1972 and then again, off and on, through the 80s and 90s. I remember the OLD Corral, on the other end of the parking lot. It burned right after New Years of 1968. They built the new one bigger, and, you're right - the music there was incredible. I wonder where you saw the picture of Mick Jagger in front of the Corral. I am looking all over for pictures from that era (late 60s, early 70s). You'll probably never see this, but anyone who does, and remembers the Corral, I'm collecting Corral info and memories for a book, and would love to hear from you. Photos would be most welcome, too.

A letter I wrote to a friend, but can anyone help me with this:
Richard; I got a project that you may be able to help me with. One weird memory I have of my teens is going to the Topanga Corral, well actually what looked like a hippy encampment behind the Corral for some live music. I remember driving up a short, steep dirt road next to the Corral. The site had what appeared to be a few "squatter" homes (non-code hippy cabins) and there was a raised, covered stage. I saw a black guy in dreds (I had NEVER seen dreds before!) and told him I thought his wig was cool. To this he responded that it was not a wig, but his hair. Later, I remember the guy was the lead singer in a band that performed and I felt embarassed about my comment while he sang. I also remember thinking how different the music was. I am guessing that the year was either '73 or '74 but it could have been a year or so later. Clapton did not release “I Shot the Sheriff” (by Marley) until ’74, and that, I think, was the beginning of Reggae commercially. Well, a few years ago I was thinking about this and thought that maybe that guy with the dreds was Bob Marley when he first started to make it. I then checked out the Web but couldn't find the connection. What I did find was that the following people have been connected with Music, Topanga and the Topanga Corral. Many during what they would consider to be it's hayday, '65 to the late '70s. (I guess the Corral was quite a hot spot for a while, till it burned down in '88). Here is a short list: Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Arlo, Canned Heat (Live At the Corral), Little Feat, Big Joe Turner (blues), Spanky and Our Gang, Spirit, Jim Morrison (Roadhouse Blues: about T Corral? rumour), Alice Cooper, Steven Stills, Neil Young, Eric Clapton, The Eagles, Taj Majal, Flying Burrito Brothers, The Stones and Harrison are shown in a photo in front of the Corral, ... Well, I was wondering if you, by chance had gone to this fest, if you remembered it, and anything you might have to add. But those were they days of $20 bags and cases of Bud. Let me know.
