Firstly I am ill at the time of looking at this sight, I ate something bad in Nicaragua. Secondly, your right about the job, thats why I jacked it in and came to central america, and now Ive seen two toucans in the jungle which is much better than in a cage, dont you think.

E-mail:toucanadam@yahoo.com Subject:Toucans In Flight Time:Thursday, July 1st 2004 - 06:13:15 PM Hi Ian....toucans do, indeed, fly....and quite well, I might add! In fact, it was the fact that sammy was literally flying laps around my room that prompted me to finally have her flight feathers clipped....even so, they've already started to grow back and she's able to fly short distances again. When I get my hands on a digital camera again, I'll try and take a picture of Sam in flight.

You say they should only be pets if born in captivity. Then this should apply morally to all species, correct? I wonder if humans could then be included? Not trying to start a debate, just wondering out loud. Most of the time no one is right or wrong, but rather both.

I feel that the first bird I'll get will be tucan, and not the blue and gold macaw. I can't say for sure that the people in the complex will enjoy the macaws, and the noise that they like to make. And they can be loud when playing or scared for any reason. Don't anger the bird or else, that is all I have to say about the parrot. lol.

E-mail:toucanadam@yahoo.com Subject:Replies to Recent Posts Time:Tuesday, November 18th 2003 - 07:43:45 PM Kate....I'm glad I could help :) Kori...I agree with you. I only advocate the domestication of birds that are already safely in captivity, whose indirect origin is a parent...or grandparent...that was imported before it was made illegal. These birds, whether their importation was wrong or not, are already in captivity, and we should make the most of their presence here by breeding from them, and them alone, for the purpose of keeping as pets.

I am (like all of you) toucan obsessed, but I do agree that these majestic birds should be left in the wilderness. While I have no doubt that domesticated toucans make great pets, we should keep these exotic birds where the belong--in the rainforest. Hopefully by doing so we can keep these great species alive. Email me with any comments.

E-mail:jasonlockridge@hotmail.com Subject:GREAT site!!! Time:Friday, October 10th 2003 - 04:23:16 PM Hi all! Just wanted to chime in...this has the beginnings of a great site! Thanks, Adam... I'm a toucan/softbill fanatic and have always been fascinated by these unique and amazing animals. I first caught the "bug" 15 years ago when a friend who owns a pet store here in Birmingham acquired a Toco...Unfortunately, I think it was an illegal import, though I'm not sure. I had a lot of contact with it, however, and knew I'd like to have one as a companion bird someday, once I could verify the availability of a hand-raised, captive-bred baby. I found Jerry Jennings, and have my Toucan on the way. I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences... Thanks again, Adam for getting this site going...

E-mail:toucanadam@yahoo.com Subject:Warning! Time:Wednesday, September 17th 2003 - 12:40:38 PM Hey folks...first of all, as I'm sure you noticed I got tired of the old format of the discussion forum...I made it nice and keel-ey :) Also, a warning goes out to anyone considering purchasing a bird from an unverified breeder in California. I paid 2500 for sammy. The same "breeder" that I got him from, who already lied about whether he was hand raised or not, just posted a classified for keel babies for 1800 bucks apiece. This is a ridiculously low price, and I was pretty sure there was a reason. Well, "coincidentally"...I happened to be browsing through some classifieds, when I saw discovered keel billed babies being offered for 1700! Be very cautious of who you believe when they say they are a "breeder." Amado and Jerry are the only real breeders in the US, no matter what anyone tells you. Every place else is as good as a pet store, if you're lucky, and a back-alley unlicensed tattoo parlor if you're not. These california breeders are illegally importing birds, and selling them at extremely low prices, many times to self-proclaimed "breeders" who sell the birds at a marked-up price. A warning was released by Amado Summers recently regarding this issue. Please visit his site at www.summersbirds.com and read it at the bottom of his availability page. I'd like to thank Amado for giving the heads-up. I was angry at first that I had not waited for such a "deal", but now I'm glad I didn't. One more thing: if you are not already familiar with it, please visit the Ramphastidae Enthusiasts Online Group at REOG.ORG. It is a great site about toucans and related species.

E-mail:toucanadam@yahoo.com Subject:Leave them in the wild? Time:Wednesday, September 10th 2003 - 09:04:19 AM Jess... Where do you think your precious domesticated finches originated? Parakeets? Dogs, for christ sake? All of the animals that you think are "supposed" to be kept as pets were wild caught to begin with. Furthermore, I do not condone keeping wild caught toucans as pets. Not only is it against my morals, it's illegal. Toucans are only legal to be sold in the US if they are bred in captivity....bred from those bred in captivity, with a wild caught ancestor taking place back in the early 80's before the Wild Bird Conservation act was put in place. Please remember the origin of all of your "acceptable" household pets.
