Comments:I have just returned from Germany, visiting Dinglingen, now absorbed into Lahr. I visited the Lutheran Church and cemetery. The Pastor looked up records back to early 17th century. He said no records exist prior to that time as they were destroyed during the 30 Years War. No Schmeltzer's or variations have existed in Lahr in living memory. I asked people everywhere I went and they recognized the name as German but not in Lahr or surrounding area. The church graves are being disinterred for a building project; no headstones exist, only layers of bones, dirt, bones, dirt, etc. going back several centuries. My ancestor Hans Schmeltzer is no doubt buried there but no way of finding out. Pastor said young Schmeltzers probably left in 1720-30 period, leaving older ones in Dinglingen, who eventually died out. Many people also emigrated to Russia.I did meet a Claus Schmeltzer elsewhere but he is from another part of Germany.

Comments:The later gens of my Smelser/Smelcer tree are from east Tennessee - mostly Knox, Greene, Jefferson, Sevier counties. Mom is Laura Rebecca Smelser Wuesthoff, gfather Cleo Smelser, g-gfather William Chane Smelser, g-g-gfather John Strand Smelser. The line is pretty solid back to John Adam Smelcer/Smeltzer, and then it gets a little fuzzy with all those darned Johannes Smeltzers who emigrated from Germany to Pennsylvania. Didn't German parents name their boy-children ANYTHING but "Johannes"?
Would love to hear from other Tennessee Smelsers or anyone who's successfully sorted out the various Johannes Schmeltzers.

Elizabeth married Michael Shearer. On 1850 Ohio census they are listed with Susan living with them, and Susan's daughter, Sarah Crowl, age 1. I believe this is Hardin County. Later they moved to Allen Co., OH where they are buried. Susan's tombstone reads "Susan Smeltcer". Sarah Crowl became my great-grandmother. I'd like to hear from anyone who knows anything about this family.

Comments:As of today we have tested 6 Smelser/Smeltzer's in the new Y-DNA project and have identified 4 distinct family lines and have one absolute match and one likely match among the six participants. We are seeing two distinct Haplogroups so far with the family. The first is Haplogroup "I" and the other is "R1b". These are two distinct signatures suggesting that many of us are not as closely related as the surname might suggest. There are many reason what this could occur but the most likely one is that when surnames were adopted in the 1300 and 1400's completely separate family lines took the same last name. It would make sense then that two family's both involved in the business of "Smelting" metal might take on the same surname of Smelter or Smeltzer. Then, add on spelling corruptions over the last several hundred years and here we are. So, to help sort out some of this interesting mess and make some major advances in Smelser/Smeltzer/Schmeltzer etc genealogy I encourage you to find a male surnamed Smelser etc to participate in the Y-DNA project. Just go to www.familytreedna.com search for the Smelser Family project and follow the instructions or contact me directly. I'll help you through the process no matter how difficult (or easy) it may seem. It's as simple as swabbing the inside of your cheek with a Q-tip and sending it in the provided container back to the testing company. There is a cost involved which you will have to cover in virtually all cases. This is an exciting new direction in Smelser Family Genealogical Research. I hope your family is willing to participate.

Comments:I found this site by typing Donald Schmeltzer on Babblefish.com. I am trying to find my lineage in Germany. I can go no farther back than my GG Grandfather who enlisted in the Ohio Volunteers,35th Regiment in the civil war. His name was John George Schmeltzer. He was born in Cincinnati,Ohio on Jan.31, 1844 according to his pension request document. He was 17 years at time of his enlistment. His father and mother were not named on his enlistment record. Cincinnati courthouse records were destroyed in a fire. No record of his ancestry exist as far as can be discerned except by word of mouth. There were 8 brothers or 7 brothers and sister emigrated from Germany. Date and ship line unknown. They came from a family of 19 children and their father began preaching the gospel at age 65 and preached for a good many years. If anyone can shed any light in this regard I would really appreciate it. Their are are several Schmeltzers in Southeast Indiana and southwest Ohio, all related, but can find no other Schmeltzers that are verified.

Pictures and documents date from 1947 when he enlisted in the USN until at least until 1999 when the Safari Club International convention was held at the Reno Hilton when he was honored as past president..

The pictures are of his family, friends and of shipmates while in USN alone with his picture of animal he shot and at the Reno convention.

I would be appreciate and assistance on this matter.

Comments:I am seeking any descendants of Harvey L. Smetzer, who I believe was born in Wayne County,Ohio, 13 October 1861. He married Mary Greer Elrick about 1885, again I think in Wayne County,Ohio. They were the parents of 2 known children. Edna Emily Smetzer, b 18 December 1887 in Wayne County, and Bernard Obed Smetzer, b 5 May 1891 in Wooster, Wayne County,Ohio. In or about 1902 the family migrated to Benton County,Iowa. According to Census records there were quite a few families in Benton County with the surname Smetzer.
Mary Greer Elrick was born 10 October 1865 in Mifflin County,Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Barnard and Ellen Smith. Ellen Smith was a 1st cousin to my g-g-grand-father.
Edna Emily Smetzer married Victor Holst in 1911 in Iowa. Victor was born 25 July 1884 in Keystone,Benton County,Iowa.
Bernard Obed Smetzer attended school in Boulder, Colorado in 1922. In 1912 he was a graduate of Electrical School at the Navy Yard in NY and later served in the army.
As I said above I am seeking any descendants of this family.

Comments:I am interested in extending this element of my family tree.
Michael Schemetzer a farmer lived in Germany in the early 1800.
His son John Schmetzer was bn in Germany 16 April 1839 and moved to England before 1865 when he married Katherine Buskert in a Lutherin Church in High Holborn, London England. She was also born in Germany and he was a Baker.
I know they had 6 Children Henry bn 1867, Edward Bn 1869, Magdelain Bn 1871, Sophia Christine bn 1873, Catherine Bn 1875 and Maria Charlotte Bn 1878.
Sophia and Catherine both ended up in Australia.
Magdelain married my great grand father James Blackburn.
Henry and Edward both got married but do not appear on the UK 1902 census. Did they emmigrate or change their names to Smith? The Uk 1901 census has very few Schemetzer and those that do appear live in Lincoln and Liverpool not London
Would like to find out about the German connection

Along with other Smeltzers who settled in New York and in Lucknow Ontairio, Most of the Smeltzers, Smelsers Smelcers etc are related and are spelled Differently due to lack of any schooling. They came across the Atlantic to escape the Potatoe famine of 1840's and spent 200 years in Ireland. Prior to that the Smeltzer's were part of the palatine group who wandered throughout Europe from the 9th century where they originated from (Bavaria and Austria) and their name then was Schmeltzer. The Saxon branch of the family were known as Schmelzer. You may want to purchase the book entitled the Smeltzers of Kilcooly my a New Yorker named Marjorie Smeltzer published in 1981 by Gateway Press of Baltimore, 111 Water Street Baltimore, MD 21202. It appears his father was Henry C. Smeltzer. If my calculations are correct Henry's father was George Jr. His father was George Sr., whose father was Philip Schmelzer,(my 5th great grandfather) arriving in America on the ship Thistle 9/19/1738.

Other than this I really don't have much about their history. Would love to hear from someone who can trace the earlier roots and might share any info regarding occupations or interesting stories about our family.
