| Comments: | Dear Don, Thank you for for writing your story of Lamsdorf. My late father, Peter Ewing, an RAAF (Australian) fighter pilot, was also a prisioner from '42 until the end. I liked the bit about the Germans not trusting aircrew -probably wise on their part! Your experiences mirror his and the Australian survivors of Stalag 8B have written a wonderful and moving account of their time there "The RAAF POWs of Lamsdorf". We are all so grateful for the sacrifices you made. |

| Comments: | My uncle, Jack Cottle (No 5674336) was a private captured at Dunkirk. (A farmer's son from Glastonbury). He was serving in 1st Bucks Battalion (Bucks and Ox regt). He spent the rest of the war in Stalag 8B and was in the E209 working party, working down the mines for three and a half years. He was on the Lamsdorf Death March.
He would love to hear from any former comrades who knew him. He particularly remembers - before he was captured - Lt Crawford and Capt Stevens from 'A' company. He is fit and well and remembers fondly his fellow POWs. |

| Comments: | Don, very moving stuff. My dad, Joss Collins was only an 18yrs old lad when put into this camp. Like others who have written to you he only talks of the funny bits regarding how he fought for his country but his family know it was alot different to the way he tells it. He's 79 now and still makes us laugh. His Captains' view of him on his Release Certificate says'....invariably makes a joke of unpleasent situations, is immense value in itself...'. Most recently he underwent a heart by-pass op and we his family relied on this attribute when he prepared for it. I'll show him your website when he is next around. Take care. |

My mother was just 8 yrs old at the time and she used to write letters, and all the men in his hut used to love to read them. |

He was repatriated under the exchange system in 1943. He was a regular soldier but never spoke of that time.I have several photos taken in the camp, sports mostly.

He was born in Scotland but emigrated to Canada in 1911 with his family, settling in Summerland, BC. He was raised in Canada and went to University at UBC in Vancouver. He returned to Scotland and did medicine at Edinburgh University graduating in 1936 at the age of 31. He joined up with the British forces and was shipped overseas in 1941. He died at age 94 in 1999. | Comments: | Hello
I found your site very moving ... thank you for preserving the memory of these things that should not be forgotten ... my generation owe our freedom to the sacrifice of your generation. I understand atht my uncle, William 'Billy' Brazier, Stoker from HMS Glowworm was transferred to the Lamsdorf camp in 1943. He rarely spoke about this, or his short service on the Glowworm, he only talked about his pre-war experiences on HMS Hood. After reading your pages I think I now know why. |
| Name: | Graham Lees |
| E-mail address: | lees107@primus.com.au |
| Comments: | My father, Leonard Lees, was a sergeant in the Royal Fusiliers and was captured just outside Salerno. He was sent to Stalag VIIIB and was evacuated on January 2, 1945. He survived the march back across Germany although he dropped out the day before they arrived in Frankfurt and was collected by a local resident with a horse and cart. He was subsequently liberated by General Patton's tank corp and arrived back in Britain on April 7. As his boots wore out he developed a severe wound on his foot which resulted in his nearly losing his leg. He is still alive and lives in Busselton, Western Australia. He has published his memoirs. |

| Comments: | Don. . ran out of space before. Just to add re your pics of Londoners sleeping in the underground, my father`s family home was in London so his parents and sisters had to sleep there during the Blitz. His youngest sister contracted TB due to the cold & damp coditions and died aged 19 yrs. This was kept from him till his return after 5 & half years, also that his own home had been hit by a V2 rocket (doodlebug) whilst my mother, sister & self were asleep in bed. As with you . . many memories that never die |

| Comments: | Hi Don . . your WW11 memoir was one of the most gripping I`ve read so far with a lot of info further to my own research on my late father`s time at Lamsdorf (he was one of the british BEF POW`S captured at Calais in May 1940 therefore in the camp 2 yrs before your arrival) We were not told much of THE MARCH except a brief account of his young friend dying in his arms, altho the book "THE LAST EXCAPE" gave a pretty vivid picture. My late husband was a 2nd Lt. Bombardier in the same war doing daylight raids over Germany. You were a truly heroic generation! June |

It is so sad to discover all these men had similar experiences. I wish the internet had been around when my grandad was alive. He maybe would have recognised some names. |

| Comments: | My 91 year old mother was recently going through some old letters and came up with one from her cousin James Morrow who was in a prisoner of war camp during WWI. James was from Hart hill near Edinborough, Scotland. I don’t know which regiment he was in or how he was captured but quite possibly he was in the Argyle & Sutherland since that was where our family seemed to always be connected. On the front page some markings areas follows:
From J. Morrow Gelangennummer: 2227 Lager-Bezeichnung: Stalammlager VIIB Deutschland (Allemagne E225 Another circular stamp: StalagVIIIB Geprofit: Nr 59 Other writing: Luft Post Via Lisbon Examined by D.B/556 The letter is very yellowed, written in pencil on lined paper. 14 Nov, 1942 Dear cousin Mary. You will get a surprise when you see who this is from, sorry I didn’t write sooner but you see I just got your address from my other big cousin Peggy. Well Mary life here isn’t as bad as one would think or be led to believe, it is now 14 months since I caught up with my misfortune but out of that I have been working 14 months. It is a fairly good job we are not asked to do too much, we get Saturday afternoon, all day to ourselves which we make use of to the fullest extent using the various indoor games we have, some Sundays we go for a walk others play football at the village pitch, then in the evenings we have our band going, its only small just now owing to the lack of instruments but are expecting a few more any day now we used to have a chap from Canada, his name is Don Howe lived about Montreal I don’t suppose you would know him. If you were here you would say the country-side minds you of dear old Scotland, some of the people have similar habits too. Well Mary by the time you get this 1943 will be well on its way, anyway I wish you, your hubby a merry Exmas , a guid new year, lots of love From your cousin James. |

| Comments: | My father-in-law Harry Bates was at Stalag V111B for much of the war. He was one of the first paratroopers and after being captured by Italians (who he hated along with Polish guards)he was taken 1st to stalag 1VA then to Stalag V111B. His experiences turned him away from God. One of the few things he said was "If you had seen mothers hiding their babies in bundles of rags then seen the guards bayonetting the bundles you would not believe there was a God" I think he saw this during the long march. 'Boldness be my friend' by Richard Pope is a book about V111B experiences.

He was put in Camp Stalag V111B for 3.5 years, and left a changed man. Dad died in 1992. My biggest regret is that we could never get him to talk about his experiences. Now we have nothing.
