Comments:Signed the book awhile ago but since that time have I've been up many roads and all ended stopped short. I'm still looking for a link of our Samuel Magill born in Va. 1770 to whom ever his father might be. I thought he might be Charles son of John that went to Va. around 1760 according to the book Greener Pastures. But latter found out birth dates of his children there first child wasn't born until 1794 The book also said he had a brother John and Archibald and listed in the book I assumed he was the eldest but on the net it said Charles was the Eldest and there was only two sons. So whats a person to think. Unless my ancestor didn't know what they were talking about Samuels birth place. So if anyone has any ideas for me I sure would appreciate the help. Our Samuel came back North between 1788 to 1798 as he married Rhoda Cain in1798 stayed in Conneaut Pa. until 1810 then came to Ohio and setteled around Sandusky Ohio Erie County all the information on the Magills in Erie Co. are on a site my aunt Myrle Samko put on awhile ago you You would have to search Charolette Belle Stacy Or email me at the above email Thanks Chuck Magill direct descendent of Samuel

There is no record of what happened to John McGills parents, Susan and Daniel. They did not appear to move to Covington with John, where he married Annie who had moved from Cincinnati to Covington just as John did. John also had a sister Annie. John, Annie and their girls, and a nephew moved to Washington, DC, sister Annie i with them in the 1900 census, then she disappears. I know the history of John abd wife Annie, one of their daughters was my grandmother Carrie McGill who married Denis Connell of Washington. I have a picture of the McGills tomb stone in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in DC. I STILL want to know the story of his parents. Can yu help me?

Comments:I am looking for my great-great grandfather, Daniel McGill/MaGill, born around 1832 somewhere in Ireland. I do not have the date of his immigration but he is in the 1860 US Census in Cincinnati, Ohio. At that time he was married to Susan McGill, also from Ireland; and had my great grandfather John M. Mcgill, age 4, born in the US. John married an Annie Biesenbach in Cincinnati,Ohio. Her parents were German immigrants, but I believe she was born in Ohio. Everyone was Catholic. After the 1860 census I cannot find Daniel or Susan. I know that at least John and Annie moved to Covington, KY where they had 3 girls, Mabel Agnus (born 1879), Roselia Bietrice (born 1881), and my grandmother, Helen Catherine(born 1885). There also may have been a sone, Frank, who passed away as a child. The girls all attended catholic schools in Covington, KY. John M. McGill was a printer and moved the family to Washington DC at sometime, where he was fairly prominant in the Bureau of Printing and Engraving. He died in 1929 and is buried in Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery in DC with his wife and children. I know a fair amount about John, Annie, and their children but not about John's parents,or if he had siblings, or where they were born, etc. Nor do I know about the Biesenbachs'. If anyone knows something, please contact me through my email.
Thank you,

I am attempting to update Grandad's history, originally dated 1950. One of the remarkable books I have in my possession is the Magill Family Record written in 1907 by Robert Magill. It includes a diary he kept during the Civil War from the family's home in Dalton, Georgia. My direct branch of the family came through William Magill I -II - III & IV. My question is how do I find the line of our whole family's originator Robert Magill of Scotland. Does anyone have the information about Robert Magill I -II & III such as birth and death dates, marriages etc.?

I think I can be helpful. William J. Magill was my GGrandfather's (Albert Veeder Magill) oldest brother. He was in the first graduating class at the Citadel, in Charleston, S.C. Went directly into the US Army as Quartermaster of the 3rd Dragoons in the Mexican War. He taught history and was commandant of cadets at The Georgia Military Institute at Marietta, GA. until the Civil War started. He helped form the 1st Georgia Regulars regiment and was Colonel until the end of hostilities. He lost his left arm at the battle at Antietem(sp).
He died in Jacksonville, Fl in 1894or95 where he was a Justice of the Peace, Inspector of Fertilizers and had orange groves until the freezes killed the trees.
His wife was from New York State and her name was Mary E. Percival, I believe. I don't know about a daughter Leonora, but his father William Magill M.D. lived in Marietta also at the time and maybe Leonora was his daughter. I know that William J. had a son Fred who was born in New York State.

I hope this is helpful and feel free to contact me at any time.

I'm Alison Magill Duffy of Tennessee via virginia via pennsylvania via Antrim Ireland near Belfast via Oxenfurd Scotland.

I've seen a lot of my line cousins in your website. The best book I've seen that carries my line is Robert McCorkle Magill's "The Magill Family Record" My g grandparents are on p115 ?.(William Marshall Magill and Sallie Robbins Zenor). William was born in GA but lived there only briefly as his parents were from east Tennessee and visiting Georgia but there are a lot of cousins in Ringgold Geoegia. My line goes back something like this William Marshall Magill (my g grandfather)/James Jr born TN/James Sr born VA/William Jr born VA or Ireland (lived in Rockingham County VA/William St born in Scotland went to Ireland went to America (Pennsylvania for a time before heading south into the NC/TN hills. Some stayed in VA. The VA Magills of my line lived in Pennsylvania as this was a large immigrant entry was and also because the colony had a religious open door policy (My Magills were , like most Scots-Irish, Presbyterian and left Northern Ireland because of conflicts going on at that time in northern Ireland. ((Oops! Still are!! My Duffy side (very Catholic)came to America abt 1854 during the starving time from Ulster near Armagh (Owen Eugene Duffy is my g. grandfather)) The Magills of my line were sent as part of the plantation era to settle in norther Ireland. Not very popular with the locals though They originated in Scotland near Edinburgh (Oxenford). A Scottish friend of mine tells me that most Magills are from the western isles but a few ended up near Eidnburg.(my line). My Tennessee line split up with some going to KY/MO/IN/TX/ etc. So...I've seen a lot of distant cousins on this website, including a few who stayed in Scotland and later in Ireland. GREETINGS and SALUTATIONS...Looks as if we're a prolific lot!

Comments:Hello again Randy.

I scanned through your Guestbook and just have to make a few remarks about the spelling of names.

My Dad told me many years ago if they spelled their name Byers we are not related. In Milam County, Texas where my grandparents married they were giving the original license to descendants in order to reduce paper, since they are also recorded in a book. Had he been alive he would have been surprised to see it. At the top of the document the
name of my grandfather was given as Henry Clay Byers, at the bottom it was given as Henry Clay BYARS. Henry Clay Byars married Sarah "Sally" Emaline Magill.

Sarah Emaline Magill was the daughter of John Henry Magill and Mary Catherine Pose. John Henry Magill was the some of William B. Magill (born in MO) and Martha Jane Gragg.

Over the years I have found within one document a name spelled 2 or 3 different ways. So please tell folks that if their ancestor spelled their name Magill, don't over look the McGill's. In the early days of our great country education was not given to the masses. Unless you were connected to a family that had the funds to educate you, you may grow to adulthood, marry and die and not know how your name was really spelled. Case In Point: the person who was taking the census might spell the name wrong, put down the wrong age and guess where a person was born. If the census taker did not want to ride ten miles to the next house, they asked a neighbor. The neighbor had work to do and just told that person anything. Unless they were kin to the neighbor they really didn't know all the details of that family that lived ten miles down the road.

Most seasoned genealogists know spelling a name was up for grabs. Just a note to clear up why the name MAGILL, just might be spelled McGILL. cbh.

Comments:Hello Randy.

My Magill connection is William Byrus(Byers) Magill, b. 1819 Clay Co. MO. He married Martha Jane Gragg. You have this information on your Site.

I was a subscriber to the Magill/Mcgill Search and Share back in the 1980's. I also published 4 surname quarterlies back then. The Pate Pioneers, The Byars/Byers Family Enquirer, The Elkins Eagle and The Cole Chronicle. Back then surname quarterlies were the best way to reach and share information. Judy Davis of Portland Oregon was one of the few people using the computer for research. I stopped publishing due to an illness.

I used a Smith Corona Word Processor/Typewriter and stored my data on little tapes. The machine broke and I have not found a way to retrieve the informaion. Fortunately I had printed out information on my direct line.

About 2 years ago my sister decided that I needed to get back into research and do it the "now" way. She bought me a computer and put me on line. I had no choice but to learn to use the balmed thing.

I corresponded with Lola Kimbell and Judy Davis send me copies of the Bible Records. Others like you have gone further back than I did. However I caution every one to find those PRIMARY records. Over the years many errors have been made because someone did not see the original.

Thanks for all the hard work you have put in on our mutual Magill family. Please note. I am a female. People think because of my first name that I am of the male gender.

Comments:I have been searching for my great grandfather Charles Newton Magill/McGill's family. His parents were born in Tennessee, Charles was born in Indiana. Charles Newton Magill/McGill moved from ? Indiana to Decatur County, Iowa. In the 1860 Franklin, Decatur county, Iowa census is Charles Magill living with Joseph and Mary Dose/Doze, on the same page is Calvin and Sarah Johnson. Calvin Johnson married Sarah Magill/McGill and Joseph Dose/Doze married married Mary Johnson. Also on the same page is my Wilson family Isaac and Rebecca Wilson who's daughter Mary M. Wilson married Charles Newton Magill/McGill. There is a long story about Charles N. Magill/McGill, I don't know when he was born three census reports have him born abt. 1830 and three have him born abt. 1815-1820. In a book titled "Down 100 Years" on page 261 (Decatur co. Iowa) they have a Charles McGill b-1817, Indiana; c. to D. c. 1855; w. Nancy M. Wilson; c. 6 children; ch. Methodist; d. 1914. My great grandmothers name was Mary M. Wilson not Nancy M. Wilson but they could have gotten her name wrong. Charles and Mary's first child was born May 10, 1863 and died August 21 1864. Charles and Mary had four daughters Rebecca Ann, Margaret C., Catharine Jane, and Rachel (my grandmother).

Relatives now in Niagara County NY. If anyone recognizes a line that he might have descended from it would help me to dig a little deeper.

From what I have read around here and there I understand Magill was a royal Scottish name which spread to Antrim Ireland and to Belfast. In America they seemed to work with the Cherokee Indians and intermarried. Mc Gill seems to be a Canadian twist on the name? Just assumtions mostly, if anyone has any real information I find this very interesting. Thank You.

My Grandfather was born in Texas in 1881 (approx) and moved to California about 1920 and died in Fresno Ca in the 1960's, his first wife was Lily Alice Morris b. in Texas. Comments:Hello,

Just stumbled upon this site.

My McGill family "came from Virginia" (Ha! - didn't almost every family in the USA back then come from "Virginia"?) Roamed on down for a bit in Tennesse (1810) and made themselves comfortable in Dallas/Sumter Counties Alabama USA (1820s-1850s) - some continued on over to Louisiana and Texas.

It was a William Magill (yep - changed to "McGill" the next generation) who was born in Va. He left sons James, John, probably Thomas, - BERRY, CARSON, HITT, BOZEMAN families tied in back in the 1830s.

I can see by the posts here this is a VERY LARGE family - !!! Anyway - hopefully some cousin will see this!

Thank you for this site!

Some research that my grandmothers uncle did show that he came from a William Magill b. Ire died 1749 Rockingham Co., Va. He had sons James, William, John. James had two sons Robert and Samuel and it is believe that one of these two are Charles b. 1785 father. Although, my grandmother swore that weren't Irish but Scotch! Do you have any information on this Charles?

Comments:Hi, just looked up the site out of curiosity to see what info is out there on my family history. There appear to be a great many Magills all over the world, though there are not many web sites-I think?-, and it is nice to have somewhere to share our common ancestry. I am a Magill on my mothers side, she hails from Carnlough(Co. Antrim in N.Ireland). My Grandmother was Sarah Magill and I still have quite a few relatives living in and around that area. If anyone would like to get in touch drop me a line.

Ps does anyone know why the name was corrupted and the Diff' spellings of McGill and Magill came about?. Cheers

Comments:I appreciate all the good Magill information you have on your website. I know my husband's ancestor, John Magill (b. about 1797 in Augusta Co., VA) is probably related to this line.. I just can't prove it yet. This John Magill married Elizabeth Ruddell (b. 13 Sept 1801 in Augusta Co., VA, d/o Stephen and Catherine (Rutledge) Ruddell. John and Elizabeth were married about 1823 and had four children: Ingabo B. Magill (b. 16 Oct 1823, named for her maternal great-grandmother); Stephen Magill, (b. about 1824, named for maternal grandfather); Cornelius Magill (b. about 1826, named for maternal great-grandfather) and Sarah Jane Magill (b. 22 Sept 1828, mother had a sister named Jane, but I don't know where the Sarah came from ???from John Magill's mother). John Magill died before 6 August 1834 in Washington Co., MO and his brother-in-law was named as guardian to the minor children. Elizabeth is listed in the 1840 Washington Co., MO census as head of household. If anyone has information on John Magill's parents or siblings I would appreciate hearing from them. Thanks!

I really don't know much about my heritage, but my father's name is Ronald Graeme Magill, and i believe that i am decended from the Magill's of Belfast, Northern Ireland. This is quite probably true because I've been told i even roll my R's a bit!
I have tried to trace my lineage, but there are too many gaps at present to allow this. Still, even just seeing my surname on a webpage makes me feel like a connection of sorts has been made, as there are very few Magill's living in New Zealand. Just once, i'd like to hear my surname pronounced right, as it is often pronounced as McGill, and i have been assured by my father that this is not the case for our surname!

Comments:I am descended from Samuel Hunter born 12 Dec 1847 Carncastle, County Antrim. His parents were Samuel Hunter and Sarah McBride - His brothers were John & James - sister Sarah - In 1867 there was an uprising and Samuel and another man were on the run from the British - family oral history says that one was killed - the other left Ireland with his family bound for Canada - Samuel came on to Australia and arrived approx Dec 1867 ( married Aug 1869 )- he called himself Samuel Hunter-Magill and told his children that this was in memory of the one who was killed (Magill) - perusal of the 1851 census shows Magills & Hunters living together therefore the above scenario is not so far fetched - his religion was Presbyterian - his trade was school teacher - my great grandfather dropped the 'Hunter' from the surname and insisted that the first male child of each generation have 'Hunter' as second christian name - each of his brothers did the same.
He settled in New South Wales, Australia and I am 4th generation Australian. Any relatives out there?
