Comments:Hi there!

I was Googling my family roots and found this website. As you can tell, I'm also a Traas! Perhaps we're different branches from the same tree.

I'm 19 years old, living in Georgia, USA. But I've lived in the Netherlands, France, Taiwan and Hong Kong over the course of my life (so that's not much help).

I've always had trouble learning about my family history. Do you know anything about the Traas clan or perhaps a resource I could use to discover more details?

Of course, it is possible that we are two completely different families. Still, that is unlikely because I don't know of anyone else who bears the name.

Thanks!

Julian

It eventually became the primary residence of the chiefs of the O'Sullivan clan. In 1192 the Normans successfully wrestled the site from the O'Sullivans and built a classic defensive motte there. Knockgraffon remained in Norman hands for the next 806 years until it was bought by an O'Sullivan (Dr. Gary Brian Sullivan of Statesboro, Georgia) from Donal Keating of Clonmel House. The last O'Sullivan chief to live at Knockgraffon was Donal Mor. To celebrate the return of this sacred site to the O'Sullivan clan, Dr. Sullivan named his son, who was born in 1999, Donal Mor Connor O'Sullivan

Unfortunately we couldn't transport any of your gorgeous applejuice back home with us to Scotland on our motorcycle! Re. the discussion on wind turbines,i'd like to add my two cents worth.
Firstly, the people who quite rightly advocate them as onelternative source of power should come over to Scotland and take a look at the 300ft monstrosities that scar our previously unspoilt upland areas, and each of these so called "farms" are at least a dozen in number. Secondly, there is absolutely no way that windpower can ever hope to supply any more than a fraction of our energy needs however green it is. Best regards, Danny and Alison.

Comments:To whom it may concern,
After reading Con Hill's previous comment, we exchanged a few emails, where I think we agreed on quite a good deal, although not on everything to do with wind power. Just so that you might get an idea of what we were discussing, below is the initial response that I made:

Dear Con,

Many thanks for posting to our guestbook. Unfortunately, I did not see the message until today, so am only now coming around to replying. I did get to look at your website though.

My initial interest in wind turbines arose in Holland, where my parents families come from, and where one of my uncles in particular, as a large turbine situated close to his farm (for more than 10 years now). At around that time, airtricity started in Ireland, and as I do not believe in the future prospects of fossil fuel, and would rather not see nuclear in Ireland, I started purchasing electricity from them straight away.

I do know from my uncles experience in Holland, that they have no issues with noise, television reception, or shadow flicker, despite the turbine being located about 700m to the east of their residence, which could give rise to flicker in the mornings. I have often spent time in their garden (in a rural location) and have noticed nothing. And they are not upset to have the turbine close to them.

From the perspective of turbines in Ireland, I am unable to testify to how people have been affected here, but I am prepared to accept their testament. Perhaps turbines were badly sited, and should not be where they are, or perhaps badly designed models were used. However, their experiences are in conflict with those reported by my uncle in Holland.

I am not pleased that conflict should arise about wind turbines. It is my own feeling that this is a serious issue, as the fossil fuels that formed over the past 300 million of year, are right now just about 50% used up (excluding coal, the burning of which is much more damaging to the environment than oil or gas) , and will be completely gone by the time my grandchildren are the age I am now.

I am of the feeling that fossil fuels need to be conserved for more important uses than running cars and heating houses. These are the raw materials that go to making medicines, and are vital for such important functions.

In any case even if we do fritter away what is left of the oil and gas, we will soon have to address the issue of an energy dependant society. And the options will be renewables or nuclear (which is also finite, as the best uranium deposits are already being depleted). This will eventually mean that every possible renewable energy alternative will need to be used, and as part of this many more wind turbines will be required. And I do fear that some of these will be in places that conflict with peoples wishes. That is not to say that I am in favour of putting them in such places, but merely that it will most likely happen, as I cannot envisage people being prepared to return to the bicycle to get from A to B, nor can I imagine how the monstrously large houses that are currently in fashion will be heated without them. However people may prefer to have wind turbines close to them than a nuclear power plant.

And I do accept that there will be a toll on wildlife, and just as there haven't been wolves in Ireland for 400 years, people will probably accept it as part of "progress". But if people choose to live the way that they do, there will be a price to pay, and the price for people living in poorer parts of the planet, especially on coastal zones, will be much higher than that to be paid by people in more developed countries.

So where does that leave us now. I think that everyone will have to make up their own minds about their thinking on wind turbines. From the perspective that I look at it, I certainly fall among the group who is in favour. (In fact I have a wind vane on one of my farm buildings measuring wind speed every three minutes, to see if my own farm would be a suitable location for a small-scale turbine to power the farm building and house, and I can see that the power would be intermittent, but could organise my business to use more power when it is available, and less when winds are low.)

But I accept that I am not faced with the prospect of a massive turbine next to me, and think that I would be galled by the prospect of this if I were to derive no direct benefit from it. But perhaps this is an issue about the way that the profits from such companies are distributed, and it is my feeling that the people who are most adversely affected should benefit most. And I know that this is not the situation at the moment.

I could go on and on, but I think I have written enough. Do please reply with any thoughts or comments.
Con Traas

Comments:I am a long term buyer of your excellent products especially the apple juice and I have always admired your business. However I am stunned to read that you are supporting Airtricity. Airtricity, like Dutch giant WEOM and Spanish Gamesa are completely destroying the environment in Ireland. By seeking to place larger and larger industrial turbines in greater numbers into pristine rural areas, they are destroying landscape, quality of life, wildlife, heritage and the environment. You should try talking to the residents of Rockchapel, Co Cork as I have done and your eyes might be opened. Please visit my web-site (nb.
