| Comments: | I was lucky while I was growing up in the fact that I never
had alcohol around me, let alone drugs. I befriended people that, like me, were not into alcohol or drugs as well. In 1991 I started up at Florida State University and only then was I painfully aware of the magnitude of drinking and driving. I was always set as the designated driver and was always happy to do it. I have had very few friends die due to alcohol related incidents and am very thankful of that. Thanksgiving or '92 I got see first hand, the wrath of a drink driver. On my way from Clearwater, Florida to Tallahassee, Florida a drunken guy driving a tow truck swerving on I75 caused a 7-car pile up. I was the 7th vehicle and I actually had very little damage to my vehicle. I had this weird feeling that made me get out of my car. As I exited my car a drunk driver in excess of 80 MPH smashed into the rear of my vehicle sending it airborne. I was standing at the rear of my vehicle at the time and she missed me by less then a foot. The impact of her car and my car knocked me over and I was covered in antifreeze and oil. The girl, with no license, insurance and in a rented vehicle was about my age now, late 20's early 30's. I remember all too clearly everything that went on that night. If I was in the car at impact my head would have been crushed by the steering wheel and I would have been on fire. This is not a way to stop all drunk driving, but parents of students in colleges should petition the colleges to have buses or vans that will pick up the students and drop them off at the dorms on campus. The frat houses should be mandated to use these buses or be closed as well. Bars should be held liable for selling excessive alcohol to anyone. There is no reason for anyone to go into a bar and order a few pitchers of beer, just as if a person should not be permitted to walk into a gun store and purchase a few guns and thousands of rounds. I'm not sure I agree with the G-d talk and Jesus this and that talk either, but I know that in the end, everyone will have to look back at their lives and see how they lived them. For a long time I was one of the stupid people that would go out street racing. Luckily I never hurt, killed or even had an accident during one of my stunts through traffic. I just hope that even one person will read this and realize IT IS NOT WORTH IT. Drinking and driving, street racing, none of it!! I had 12 friends die in a year from street racing and several more that will have to live with the aftermath of accidents they were in. Treat a car as you would a weapon, with utmost respect and restrain. I wish you all the best of luck sealing with your losses. is not an illness like some cancers that cannot be treated. People who drink and drive or do drugs and drive can cure it. Drink at home. yours, and of course don't want to *know* what you have been through. On Christmas Eve night, 1992, where I live, a local 12-year-old boy in our small area was killed by a drunk driver coming home from a Christmas party. This lady travelled over a mile on the *wrong* side of an interstate highway, sideswiping a minivan with one parent and three kids inside. The 12-year-old died instantly. I never forget that because Christmas is a special time for me, and this hit really hard around here. I was 18 that Christmas, am 26 now. I always think of this incident every year at Christmastime. Maybe that's why I was surfing and saw your memorial site to your son and clicked to enter. At first I was very bitter and angry towards the man that took my best friend from my life. And somehow I managed to get passed it all and celebrate what life she had. She was only 17... The finially did keep him off the road but that was only because he became too ill to drive.. can see it. Your reality is my most dreaded nightmare. I have only one child, and I fear for his safety and I also hope he has not inherited the family tendency for alcoholism. At least my son has been raised in a sober environment. I hope that helps. I celebrated my 18th anniversary of sobriety yesterday and am proud of that, but I am not at all proud of my behaviour for the 13 years prior to that. It is only by the grace of a Higher Power that I have not harmed anyone through drunk driving. The following is for those who are still mixing alcohol and cars. It is not 'cool' to drink and drive. It is just plain stupid. People are not looking at you with awe, but with disgust or sorrow. Even if you have had 'only a couple', don't get behind the wheel of any machine. They are big and heavy and dangerous. Human bodies are not. If you can't walk in a straight line, what makes you think you can pilot a car in one, especially considering that you have had far more practice walking? Even if you don't care about yourself, think about those around you. It was difficult to learn that everything I did, in some way affected everyone I loved and everyone I came into contact with. While I was drinking, the effect was usually negative. Take responsibility for your actions. It doesn't matter what you think the world has done to you. You are in control of your life. Do something positive with it. There is lots of help available. You only need to ask. Don't balk when you hear people talk about God or higher powers. If you are an alcoholic, since it is controlling your actions, booze is your higher power. You might want to look for something better to be your guide. If you don't think you are an alcoholic, here are some signs that you are: If you drink and drive, you are probably an alcoholic. If you drink at lunch or breakfast, you are probably an alcoholic. If you hide booze, you are probably an alcoholic. If you need to have a drink to unwind, you are probably an alcoholic. If you have noticed that 'Bob' is always at the bar and you don't work there, you are probably an alcoholic. If you finish other people's drinks, you are probably an alcoholic. If you can't understand how anyone can leave half a drink behind, you are probably an alcoholic. If you have ever lost a job, friend or spouse because of drinking, you are probably an alcoholic. If you cash in empty bottles for more booze, you are probably an alcoholic. If you don't remember the night before on a regular basis, you are probably an alcoholic. If you often wake up in strange places, you are probably an alcoholic. If you periodically have to go find your car in the morning, you are probably an alcoholic. If you, your family and everyone you know thinks any of the above is normal, you are more than probably an alcoholic. If any of these are true, you need to look at yourself honestly, if you can, and seek help.

brother was killed by a drunk bus driver in 1980, when he was 20 years old. The bus driver was driving a bus at the time. We had to have a closed casket. I still miss him. I still love him. I can tell you this, though. It does get easier to live with as time goes by. Keep talking to people. Not only does it make people aware of the problem, it helps you too. I can't wait to see the website for PADD. The folks from MADD really helped my family get through it. Please know that your son is always with you. He is your little angel in heaven always watching out for you. This is a very hard thing for a couple to go through. Please, if you and/or your spouse are having any problems, please get yourself some counselling. There is lots of free and low-cost help out there. I am 19 years old and in college. I contacted this site because for my college speech class i have to do a persuasive speech. I choose drunk driving. This is a topic that i am very strongly against. want people pitty, but the fact that you can stay so strong and move on absolutly amazes me. I dont know what I would do if that was to happen to me if I had a son or a younger brother. Im a nineteen year old from Peoria, Az and I have a lot of friends that drink and drive, but after I read your story and about the accident, I still attend parties, but I dont drink and Im always the driver. I do understand, Mandy was not my child she was my niece but I did baby set her from the time she was 6 weeks old till the Friday before she was killed and she was 4 1/2 years old. I do agree about to many people getting hurt by Drunk Drivers. Nine people in my family where in the crash that killed Mandy and two where killed. I am very grateful to God that no more where killed my sister in law was hurt and her face was disfigured a little and she lost all he teeth and her arm is still parlzied and it's been 5 years ago that this happen. I would like to tell you that it gets easer the longer it is , but I would be lieing to you I still cry daily and miss her more then any thing in this world. I also have 3 kids all girls that where 11, 7,2 when Mandy was killed and it tore them up bad and my middle daughter Tiffany is still messed up from it Mandy was her best buddy. I know how it feels because on may 1 1999 my best friedn who was like my brother was killed him his best friend decided to drink and drive.. Billy didn't know his friend was drinking when the took off on a motorcycle.They slide off the side of a mountain..I don't understand how anyone can do that..
