I am trying to think of something positive to say about this match - Um....it was a very cold night but the hall was nice and warm.

This team are the top of the division, and should be playing our 1st team !! We did manage to get into double figs a couple of times - I felt sorry for Delia who had a 45 min journey there and back for not much fun !!
Well tried to all - it's a good job we have a sense of humour - they even asked us to play on in their club night, but Janet declined the offer feeling we had been humiliated enough.

Against the unbeaten league leaders, We all felt confident that there was going to be a big upset. There was. We were all upset when we lost yet again!

This was the one that got away! It was 2-2 before the split games and a win, or draw was very possible. However both pairings battled on, but were unlucky not to get a deserved draw at least
Nearly All the rubbers went to 3 throughout the evening and both teams ended up with over 300 points each, with only a couple of points difference between the teams in the end!

A strengthened EG team started well, taking 2 of the first 3 rubbers. We then settled down and took control to win all of the remaining ones to chalk up a great away win. Delia/Liam and Linda/Vic came close to a maximum.
"Super-Sub" Debbie partnered Ross in a hard fought [and sometimes heated!] victory over all three pairs [finally proving a point for Ross over his former club - he couldn't stop smiling in the pub!].

We knew this would be a tight match. At 2-2 we were optimistic of scraping a much needed away win, but despite several close games and a few 3-enders, we were unable to add to the 2 rubbers already won.
We beat this team 9-0 at home, so that just shows how valuable home advantage is. The next match (at home) is against the league leaders, so a win then is vital if we want any honours this season.

In order to avoid yet another defeat, we tried a new tactic with this one. We let the opposition win the first three rubbers to lull them into a false sense of security and then hit them on the break.
Unfortunately, their false sense of security wasn't false at all! It was real.
Mark and Will did manage to win one end, and we had them worried for a few minutes, but that was as good as it got.

The test of writing interesting reports is to be able to put a positive spin on your 5th 9-0 defeat in a row. Anybody got any ideas?
What we really need is a captain who can lead his team from the front. One point to bear in mind is that we've had 4 difficult away matches out of 5. Some team's going to get a real thrashing off us before long. I bet they're all getting worried!
We started out full of optimism and could have snatched any one of the first 3 rubbers but we didn't. Then we seem to get worse.
Li became the 11th player to be used in this campaign.

What a strange evening!! The match was a bit of a non-event, finishing in 1.5hrs, with all rubbers being won or lost in two ends. Excellent play from the whole team at a challenging venue rivalling Whitestone - lighting went from dark to orange to white, light walls and the slowest feather shuttles any of us have played with.
Chloe+Ross and Julie+Vic took 2 rubbers each (thanks to Julie for turning out on a Friday night, thus reducing her drinking time with the girls!!!). Debbie+Liam were the star pair, taking all three rubbers (many thanks to Debbie for helping us out again).

The return! This time our new skipper led from the front. Fearing an upset, he used the squad system, by dropping Li (to let him go on holiday) and brought in Barry Morecroft.
This still wasn't enough to cow the opposition who battled as though they had something to prove. Indeed, they took the first rubber courtesy of a fine performance from Janet and John against a very poor Toni and Will.
After that, the results went to form, although Barry Veasey and Joan took Toni and Will to another 3-ender. We would like to thank the home team for their hospitality, although we think the air-conditioning was faulty.

Central turned up with 5 County Vets players so we knew it was going to be tough. New pairing Chloe/Ross scored their first win together and very nearly had a second. Debbie came down from the first team to give us a hand (many thanks Debs) and did brilliantly with Liam [who's getting better every match] to take two rubbers. Lin/Vic made hard work of every rubber by purposely losing the first game in each (just to keep the opposition interested!)but finally managed to grab a maximum.

This was a match that we normally fall short due to the plastic shuttles the opposition use. This season they are using "yellow" plastic which makes all the difference (as if!!). Anyway what a night! Our two newcomers to the 1st Team played a blinder. Liam & Ross came away with 2 rubbers and only losing out to what were in theory their 1st pair (who won all theirs)! The opposition couldn't work out that when they cleared to the back to Liam the shuttle was being smashed on the service line! What an advantage being 7' plus! (at leaset that's what it must seem like to the opposition!). Well done to you both. We mustn't forget the role played by Mark & Jerry who also got 2 rubbers and Steve playing with Vic for the first time competetively i believe as John was unable to play. They won 1 rubber and only just missed out getting two! Well done my Merry Men!!

The first match of the season was the traditional curtain raiser between Mixed 4 and Mixed 5 - a bit like the FA Charity Shield, except that there was no shield and very little charity.
New captain Steve inspired his team to a famous victory against a dogged opposition, who just wouldn't admit that we were supposed to be the better team. There were lots of close scores and a couple of 3-enders. So a very enjoyable evening.
This takes us to the top of the league and sets us up for our next match against - er, um Barkers Butts. They're always a difficult team to play.

Another final mauling! Actually, a couple of the games were quite close, but we still didn't win a single end.

In a way, this match sums up our season - off to a flying start, then failing to achieve anything. Will and June, playing together for the first time, gained a comfortable first rubber, but couldn't manage that vital 2nd rubber, which might have been enough to drag us off the 2nd bottom place in the league.
Li and Kath, despite being an established pair, hadn't played together since before Christmas, which made all the difference when they also failed to win that vital rubber.
Dave and Chloe won their first end, but despite lots of battling, couldn't capitalise against the league winners.
The total points for and against in this match was much closer than the 8-1 scoreline suggests.
So that, unfortunately, leaves 2 Barkers teams propping up all the divisions.

After a few late call-off's, our resolute skipper managed to field a team that wasn't injured, sick, ineligible, playing elsewhere or just on a promise. I was in the former category, not, unfortunately, the latter.
With only 2 regulars, the evening got off to a good start with Toni & Liam winning their first rubber - but then that was it! Julie and Dan had hardly even met each other before, let alone played together, so they used the first game to get to know each other's game. And the second and third.
Tarn & Kath knew each other, but that didn't help. Near the end, Toni and Liam got the crowd interested in a tense 3-ender that ended 22-20, 20-22, 22-20. St Phillips fielded a much stronger team than the one that we beat at home, so our regular squad may have struggled to do any better.
The highlight of the evening was watching Liam extricate himself from Tarn's little 2-seater girlie car.

A good match, enjoyable nights badminton but disappointing that we could not do better. Despite getting five 20/22 scores and several 21/18 or 17 it was only Dave and Janet who managed to win a rubber. Tarn and Wendy took two rubbers to three ends and Kath and Dan also got close scores on two rubbers but to no avail. Thanks to Kath for filling in.

If this had been a football match, we would have been locked in the dressing room for an hour afterwards while the manager had a good old rant.
This was a disaster! Having taken a 3-1 lead, we should have finished them off while they were still removing the icicles from their noses.
Liam and Kath are the only pair to come out of this with any credit having won 2 out of 3.
That's our unbeaten home record gone and on this showing we don't deserve promotion.

First of all, a VERY big thank you to Vic for standing in at very short notice when one of our regulars disappointingly failed to materialise.
This has got to go down as one match that got away and was our best chance of a win this season.
We all managed to beat their 3rd pair and we all took the 2nd pair to 3 ends, but only Vic and John converting that to a win. Phil and Kelly took all 3 pairs to 3 ends, but had only one win to show for their valiant efforts.
Liam and Will secured their first rubber of the season and it should have been 2 with a bit more consistency in their first rubber.
Despite the result, this was a very enjoyable evening.

A really good result against a predominately young Jubilee team. This was an altogether better game all round. At least we used proper shuttles (although we found them to be a bit on the fast side!) which made the game a more even field. Again, there were six games that went to three ends but this time five of them were in our favour! The one we lost was really close with Barry and Steve just missing out 21-19. This was much better my Merry Men. They were a good side, but we came out on top. Hopefully this will give us the incentive to believe in ourselves and go on from here.

We were always onto a loser here, what with plastic shuttles and green to boot. Could we kill the shuttle? Could we hell! Six of the games went to three ends, so it might have been a lot different with a bit more luck! To show how difficult it was, John & Vic didn't even pick up a game! We all lost to two ends to their first pair, but all of us went to three ends against their other pairs, with Mark & Jerome winning one of them! It will be a different matter when we play the return leg. The only good thing about the evening was the beer afterwards!

We knew before we started that this was going to be a tough match. Two thirds of our team had already lost to Ernesford 4 while playing for Mens 3 and even with Steve deputising for the injured Li, all we could realistically hope for was to retain our dignity. And despite the 9-0 scoreline, we did just that. In their first rubber, Steve and John took their opponents to 3 ends. And in the very last rubber, Phil and Kelly were narrowly edged out in a 3-end thriller. In fact, all 3 pairs had their share of close games. We won't win the league, but we now know we can give anyone a game.
