I was born and raised in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Church on Germain Street in Buffalo, New York. We used to first spend Christmas Eve supper at both Grandma's houses, then take a nap before heading to midnite mass. I really enjoyed your website. It brings back so many memories, especially since we are all far away from our families now. I can't thankyou enough for this site. It brought a big lump in my throat and tears to my eyes with the good memories, especially since both my parents, my father's identical twin brother, and my grandparents are no longer with us. It has been a very hard year end for us, but this is a wonderful way to keep the traditions alive. i really enjoyed reading the story about christmas eve. This is a very interesting website. I teach grade three and am currently doing a unit about Christmas Around the World. The children will be making spider webs and spiders to go with the story called 'The Miracle of the Christmas Tree'. It has taken me a long time tonight to figure out all the Ukrainian words in the story but thanks to google I have managed to work things out. |

Wow! I came across these pages by accident and they really brought a tear to my eye. Remembering the songs and some of the traditions that the Ukranian community in my town still adhered to. I'll never forget the drunken rabble that assembled in our home to sing Christmas songs after they had been to numerous other homes enjoying a tot or two. Happy memories indeed. I too am of Ukrainian heritage and very proud of it. My father Steve came from Ukraine in 1939 and settled in Murnum, Alberta. Many relatives still reside there but as the years went on he and his family moved to the Toronto area. Nicely done. Very impressive. I especially like the ecards. But some of the MIDIs are too slow (in tempo, not download!) Also a couple mistakes in the carols. Take a close look at the Ukrainian and Transliteration of the 1st verse of Vo Vyflyjemi: they're different! :) Don't get me wrong. This is a wonderful job! Have you considered presenting the carols in actual writing instead of pictures? If you were to use one of the standard encodings, koi or iso, then people could cut and paste the lyrics when making song sheets for Rizdvo... at least, I don't think I can be the only one doing this. (I might be able to help with this) But it is hard to find carols that aren't images. Plus, then you'd be searchable by lyrics in Google in Ukrainian! |

My parents came from Ukraine and I enjoyed having two Christmases while I grew up. When I moved away from the City my parents lived in, and came home only for December 25h, we started to celebrate December 24th the way we would for Ukrainian Christmas Eve, and have continued this tradition to this very day. My grandparents on my mother's side were from the Ukaine. We grew up having 2 Christmas' and with some great food and soups. Not only that but some old traditions that we all enjoyed.
