| Comments: | Hi everyone I hate to say it but i am one of the unfortunate ones who have health issues associated with agent orange. I servered aboard morton As a BT from 72 to 76 I remember very well that we went pierside in Da Nang.
I have asked the VA and the DAV for help. But have pretty much been told that we are not covered because we didn't actually step on the land. And there is nothing they can or will do unless I can prove that I was exposed. I am glad that a shipmate is getting benefits i only wish I knew how he did it. If there is anyone that has any ideas please let me know. |

| Comments: | During either the 71-72 or 72-73 (believe it was the later) the Morton went into Danang and tied up at the pier. The recent studies about Agent Orange issues by the Australian Government has shown that working in the coastal areas of S. Vietnam has generated some serious illnesses from our intake of the water. The Morton is not listed on any publicized listing by the VA but we know one of our shipmates has been approved for AO issues.
If anyone remembers the precise date we were at the pier in Danang, please let me know. Due to the duty I pulled over my 5 trips to SVN I am already eligible but we are going to see more shipmates become ill. We need to get in front of this now before we are forgotten. If any of you are interested in reviewing the findings of the Aussie study you can google the Agent Orange article from the American Legion magazine earlier this year as well as a number of other sources on line. If you are having any complications which are listed as AO caused, pursue it NOW! We were told to go and serve our nation and we did, it is time for them to stand up to the promise the made just as we were expected to. The highest number of non-hodgkins patients are Vietnam vets. The highest group within that group are those who were blue water sailors. You drank it, ate food cooked with it, and showered in it. The Australian study showed that distilling the sea water actually intensified the dioxin. |

| Comments: | I was an FT on the Morton for 3 cruises, starting in 4/66. I read somewhere that Kieft had written a book about that cruise. I ordered the book and man did the memories come flooding back. It was the same when I went to the recent reunion in Va Bch which was my first. I saw guys I hadn't seen for 40+ years and we just picked up like no time at all had lapsed. And I made a lot of new acquaintenances as well. As for the book, I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was pretty damn accurate from my pespective. I don't know of a lot of absolutes so chances are he was relieved by who he stated relieved him in the book. My GQ station was Plot 1 but I ended up in the gun director on more than one occasion. It's been 45 years. Get over it. I thank John for writing the book because it had a lot to do with my reconnecting with my past. |

| Comments: | Sorry you didn't like the book Bob. It was just a personal memoir and I don't pretend to any great kind of writer. I meant no disrespect to quartermasters and thought all you guys did your jobs well. I don't remember who relieved me that day, I just know he was late arriving to his station. Probably had a good reason...I don't know. As far as the lookout picture goes, it might have been taken on the bridge as you suggest, but it was a representative picture for the story about my time serving as a lookout. If you want to talk more about it, you can email me. |

| Comments: | My name is Bob Rodgers QM3 and served on the Morton 1966-1967. I read the stupid book John Kieft wrote about the Morton, it's all taken from deck logs, Officers Logs and Quartermasters Logs. no real work on his part. In this book he disgraced me and my fellow Quartermasters, and I think if you write a book about the Morton, and down grade your fellow shipmates whith wrong information, you are a real SHIT HEAD. He claims THAT A GOD-DAMNED QUARTERMASTER, as he put it in his book, relieved him late at the helm for general quarters and he couldn't get to his station quick enough, like he was someone important, Quartermaster didn't stand helm watch when we were at general quarters, we were the guys fixing the position of the ship.
This book he wrote about himself has a lot of bull. He has picture of himself on the wing of the bridge and claims he standing lookout. Look outs didn't stand watch on the bridge. Don't know how we made it with out him. |

| Comments: | I was on board Morton 1966-1969. My recruiter said I'd be an electronics tech. Spent my first year in Forward Fireroom, got lucky at end of 1967 Westpac and became an electrician, was on team getting Morton ready for FRAM in Long Beach summer/fall 1969, left EM2. Me and 3 others were transferred to Turner Joy (DD-951). Got out of Navy when TJ returned from Westpac June 1, 1970. Then became a computer design engineer in San Francisco South Bay, now retired in Santa Clara taking care of my mom who has dementia. I ran the TJ Website till moving in 2005. Checkout the YouTube video I made called Battle of Brandon Bay or click TJ from my Homepage. It was the last surface gun battle in USN history. Fair winds and following seas. |

| Comments: | Hi ALL,
I was HT3 Glisson in those days, and I was only on the ship for the last deployment before the boat got put to sleep. OBVIOUSLY it was the honorable thing to do as we spent so much time in Shipyards getting towed and repaired at shipyards in Guam, Subic Bay Philippines, and Sasebo Japan, that the crew renamed the cruise from "WESTPAC 81", to "YARDPAC 81". The CO of the ship had a reputation for um, "running in" to things in Pearl Harbor[piers, fellow ships etc], hence Cdr Bell's nickname on the waterfront was CAPTAIN CRUNCH! I saw it firsthand when we ran into the pier in Manila Harbor, the sound of the scraping metal of the ships hull against that concrete pier column was like fingernails on a chalkboard. Oh well, Memories! |

| Comments: | I served in the Navy from '60 to '64 and I'm assisting an author writing a book about a SEAL team whose mission was compromised on 31 October 1972. I have deck logs from the USS NEWPORT NEWS, which was the ship that ultimately rescued the wounded SEAL team members.
At 0951 on 31 October 1972 USS MORTON (DD 948) received hostile fire from a shore battery as she was providing close in gunfire support. The logs contain no details, but I think MORTON was covering for the SEALS as they attempted to get off the beach. Do you have any recollection of events that morning concerning gunfire support from your ship, and could you put me in touch with any other Gunnery Division or Fire Control Division personnel aboard MORTON at that time? Your assistance would be much appreciated. |

| Comments: | Served on the USS Morton From August 1971 to September 1973. Fast forward 37 years later and my wife and I are looking forward to our retirement and enjoying our first grand child. After retiring from the Navy in 1989, I went to college on the G.I. Bill. I found out after college that my Navy skills paid more. I now have a Chief Engineer's license in the Merchant Marine. I do relief work on the USNS Brittin out in Bremerton, Washington. On Saturdays I serve as a volunteer tour guide on the museum ship USS Turner Joy (DD-951). Hope to attend the up-coming reunion in Virginia Beach. |

| Comments: | The Morton was my one and only experierence with Naval life. I was assigned to her out of Pearl for six weeks during the summer of 1978 for my Plebe cruise as a Midshipman. I spent two weeks in each of three divisions, Deck, Quartermasters, and Forward Fire Room. The first two weeks were spent prepping her for the Change of Command ceremony for DESRON 35. The second two weeks were spent standing watch on the bridge and working in the Admin spaces, while my final two weeks were spent in the fire room. I enjoyed my cruise and wish all former crew members smooth seas throughout their lives. |
