I was MM3 working in Agang and stood underway watches in aft enginroom as lowerlevelman.Noticed while browsing that Rush Riley has signed the book in 2005.Hey Rush still out there? I'll never forget any of the times on Snortin Morton,or the shipmates during my time aboard. Guys like Mahalo Brown, Mike Stamper, Rick Cosper Charlie Byrum, how about MM1 Yepez what a pain. The list goes on and on. Thanks for the good times, and thanks for the ride Merlin Bell.

Comments:I served on the Morton 1965-1968. Came on board as a RDSN left as an RD2. I remeber an instance in which we went up some freakin' delta to provide gun support, and we couldn't use sonar because it was so shallow. Was this a dream? Have I watched too many war movies? If you have any facts on this let me know

Comments:Appreciate the opportunity to see the destinies of many shipmates. You were stuck with me in lieu of an HM IDT Doc, for the 1977 Westpac; though we took aboard an HMC named after out DD950 running-mate, Doc Edwards, in mid-cruise. I was the DESRON 35 Surgeon, and learned almost everything that I was ever to learn about communicable diseases in one week following the ship's first port visit to Subic after three weeks transit. It was an important maturational process for me in learning how many people would lie about their intention to take protective measures, over the next 30 years. ...I roomed with ENS Chuck Klaren, the DCA, a brilliant young man who always dealt fairly and honestly with those around him. Many people, from Merlin Bell down, attempted to teach me things. I was young, and full of Knowledge, and many of those lessons took years to achieve consciousness. They also claimed to have learned things from me, but I now realize that they were being kind.

Comments:1981, First ship out o' boot, and promptly decommissioned. Got on in the PI in June, got the news off the alaska chain islands on the way back to Pearl and got mess duty in the chiefs mess for decom. Had a large hatch fall on my head while in Sasabo and had to get an MRI at the base there. I also remember that when you sent your shirts out for laundry in Japan they came back with your name sewed on, very cool.

Comments:I served on the MORTON when it was recommissioned in 1970 or 1971, and was a plank owner. we went to perl harbor to our home port. On the way we employed or fired live amo over a green country that we were not told of. I thought it was Vietnam, but no one would verifiy that.So no one got the medal or any info that we were there, I have no proof that i'm telling my son the truth. Any one that knows what that was about, I would be gratfull for a reesponse.

Comments:Dear Shipmates: The USS Morton was my first ship out of boot camp,1964-65 and I would love to get in contact with SM1, Gleason Eads. The Morton sailed to Westpac shortly after I reported aboard in 1964 and we relieved the USS Turner Joy and USS Maddox at the Subic Bay Naval Station. Both of these destroyers had just been attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin and the USS Morton and USS Edwards were now assigned the task of going back into the Gulf and to reassure American's stand in international waters. The second evening in the Tonkin Gulf, both of our ships came under attack. What a GLORIOUS era the Morton has had in U.S. Naval history and I am proud to have been one of her crew members and have served on her. Fair Winds, Following Seas, John A. Altfeltis, USN-Retired

Comments:Finally! My face on a web page! What a great website! It is 4-0! It was a joy to serve ('75-'78) on one of the last WWII style destroyers. Commodore Blundell(?)of Desron 35 once told me how much he loved Morton's lines and that was why he'd station himself on her instead one of the newer FF's. It was also great to come onboard as a yardbird (Shop 67-electronics)for the refit in '80-'81(?)and be addressed as Mr. Cossey!
