Comments:I am the nephew of Antonio(Tony)Palombo. My uncle served on the USS YMS-19 from the time it was commissioned in June 1942 until the day it sank, 24 September 1944, 68 years ago today. The ship was lost off the coast of Angaur of the Palau island group in the South Pacific. He was a Chiefs Machinists Mate in charge of the crew running the engine room of the YMS-19. Unfortunately, the YMS-19 hit a mine that day, in which nine of the 30 crew members on board were lost. One officer and a Steward's Mate were blown overboard and never recovered. The other seven (including my uncle) were in the Engine Room when the mine struck the "screws." As of today, I haven't found the name of the PCC boat that saved the remaining 21 crew members, but I will find it. I salute all of our Mine Warfare members both past and present for their heroic actions. God Bless all of you.

Comments:I served on the USS Prime (MSO466)from 1956/1957. I came on board as an SN and left as a YN3. A YN2 Mays was my boss and LT Trawick was the XO. I was transferred to the USS Constant(MSO427)a few days after my promotion. I've got to admit I knew nothing about being a YN, so, you better believe I hit those books all day and into the night. I guess it paid off. I left the ship as a YN2 in December 1959. In 1964, I went to the USS Impervious (MSO449) and was promted to YN1. Lt Charles W. Crawford was the X.O. and LCDR Spadoni, was the CO. I got lazy on shore duty. In 1967 I was transferred to Madrid, Spain 6 mo. later I was promoted to YNC. Because of my time spent on minesweepers, and having to learn my craft on my own and learning it well, helped me get a M.A. Degree in Education before retiring in 1977. By the way, Benton, may not remember me, but I do remember him. Hello Benton.

Comments:I was on the USS Excel MSO-439 in 1986-1987. I was in the pilot house while pulling in and out of port, on the quarter deck during maritime training with the quarter master, and on the aft during excercises loading the cutters on the lines. I remember I joined the ship while it was ending its time in dry dock in Seattle Washington and we went up to Vancouver Canada our first time out. We had high seas that night and I remember a lot of the crew were in bed sick to their stomachs and I was on the quarter deck enjoying the ride. It was like a rollercoaster out at sea. Loved it. We then made our way home to Treasure Island San Francisco. I flew back to Seattle to retrieve my motorcycle along with some friends and we rode highway 101 all the way down to San Francisco. It was the best road trip of my life. Our next trip out was to San Diego for DC training. I enjoyed my time on the Excel, wow what a trip down memory lane.

Comments:I served aboard USS Albatross MSC 289 from November 1967 until September 1969 under Lt. Edward Cole Jr. and Lt. Stephen Wilson. As it turned out, I was on her last Vietnam patrol in March and April of 1969 prior to the ship being scrapped the following year. What made Albatross a fine ship, despite re-occurring mechanical issues, was her crewman.

Comments:John Ross, my great uncle, served as an Electrical Engineering Officer aboard Minesweepers in the Pacific and Mediterranean during WWII. He ran his own electrical business in 1941 at Redford, MI (Detroit area) when he received orders to report to Norfolk, VA for Electrical Officer / Minesweeper training following the attack at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941. His USN career began aboard a minesweeper in the Pacific in 1942, and he was transferred to an MSO group that was assigned to sweep the beach landing areas of Italy prior to the Allied landings along the Italian coast. My uncle passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease in 1995 in New Port Richey, FL at age 85. I am trying to find out from his immediate family the names of the minesweepers he was stationed aboard during WWII. Please let me know of any groups or Retired Navy organizations that could help me to find the names of the ‘sweepers’ that he was assigned to and the areas that they were assigned to. I would be forever grateful to you all. Thank you. Respectfully submitted, G. Mark Fuller, Woodburn, OR e-mail: MarkFuller19@gmail.com. I can also be reached at (503) 602-8265 in Oregon.
