| E-mail address: | renelopez@leaco.net |
| Comments: | I was on the USS Excel MSO-439 in 1986-1987. I was in the pilot house while pulling in and out of port, on the quarter deck during maritime training with the quarter master, and on the aft during excercises loading the cutters on the lines. I remember I joined the ship while it was ending its time in dry dock in Seattle Washington and we went up to Vancouver Canada our first time out. We had high seas that night and I remember a lot of the crew were in bed sick to their stomachs and I was on the quarter deck enjoying the ride. It was like a rollercoaster out at sea. Loved it. We then made our way home to Treasure Island San Francisco. I flew back to Seattle to retrieve my motorcycle along with some friends and we rode highway 101 all the way down to San Francisco. It was the best road trip of my life. Our next trip out was to San Diego for DC training. I enjoyed my time on the Excel, wow what a trip down memory lane. |

He lived in Atlanta, GA for a time after the war, the moved back to Texas, where he and family lived in San Angelo. He died in San Angelo in 1970. |

I fell the US Navy gave the old minesweeper`s a dishonorable discharge ,by having them all chewed up and disposed of , would have been more honorable to hull them out to open sea and sunk ,where all the other honorable ship`s lie .these minesweeper`s were good ship`s and gave there all for us .thank God the Force is on the bottom of the sea . |

He ran his own electrical business in 1941 at Redford, MI (Detroit area) when he received orders to report to Norfolk, VA for Electrical Officer / Minesweeper training following the attack at Pearl Harbor on Dec 7, 1941. His USN career began aboard a minesweeper in the Pacific in 1942, and he was transferred to an MSO group that was assigned to sweep the beach landing areas of Italy prior to the Allied landings along the Italian coast. My uncle passed away from Alzheimer’s Disease in 1995 in New Port Richey, FL at age 85. I am trying to find out from his immediate family the names of the minesweepers he was stationed aboard during WWII. Please let me know of any groups or Retired Navy organizations that could help me to find the names of the ‘sweepers’ that he was assigned to and the areas that they were assigned to. I would be forever grateful to you all. Thank you. Respectfully submitted, G. Mark Fuller, Woodburn, OR e-mail: MarkFuller19@gmail.com. I can also be reached at (503) 602-8265 in Oregon. |

He was such a man of honor, he will be sorely missed. To him I dedicate this poem which I wrote for him this morning. Anchors Away Sailor By Lesa L. Hanners Jul 29, 2007 Another bold Sailor has sailed his last Sea, To that far distant shore where his soul can be free. His battles are over, he sailed with the best, To the land where a Sailor finally has rest. So Anchors Aweigh Sailor, Flags to the Mast. Your Call Signs been given, Heaven At Last. |

| Comments: | Members of the minesweeping community; The Lucid MSO-458 Foundation was formed by a group of minesweeper crewmen who served aboard US Navy MSO's. MSO's are a class of wooden hull oceangoing minesweepers that are now decommissioned and fading from public memory. The group has obtained the USS Lucid MSO-458 and has her docked at Bradford Island, California. Work has begun! The organization is restoring her and a public museum is established. The MSO is a little known and poorly documented, extremely interesting facet of Naval history. The USS Lucid Museum is dedicated to telling the story of the minesweeping men and their wooden ships, the last all wooden US Naval ships, to navigate the oceans. We will be telling the stories of Mine Recovery and UDT teams, Floating Pigs, Hammer Boxes, Magtails, Aluminum Engines and Towed Sonar. The little known stories of Contact, Magnetic and Acoustic minesweeping as well as the mystery of Magnetic Countermeasures will be told through the displays, narratives and museum media. Typhoons, tiny ships and ice-clad superstructures are only a small part of the "Wooden Ships and Iron Men" story. From sweeping the Mekong Delta in Viet Nam, observing the final Nuclear blasts on Johnston Island to sweeping the Persian Gulf, "Where the Fleet Goes, We've Been" will be clearly illustrated. Since there is no other Naval Museum that even attempts to tell the story of the MSO the USS Lucid is an important and living detail of US Naval History. First, Lucid must undergo a restoration. Previous civilian owners for commercial use have modified her. She needs hull repairs and painting and re-outfitting to be brought back to her former Naval dignity and glory. The Lucid MSO-458 Foundation has a workforce of planners, engineers and volunteer manpower who are vested and committed to this grand and worthy project. Bringing her to life is a large financial undertaking. We’re looking for tax-exempt gifts from the Military Industrial sector and individuals to help with this extremely valuable endeavor. Of course, all donors will be properly and prominently acknowledged aboard the vessel. Your donation will help preserve this vital part of Naval History. Please join us in telling the MSO story by sending a tax-exempt gift to Lucid MSO-458 Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit foundation through our website. http://www.usslucid.org We thank the NMA for allowing our note on their Log Book. |

| Comments: | I was researching my family name, came across information on the U.S.S. Fitch and read about her exploits, especially during the D-Day invasion, which took place the year before I was born. I'd like to thank all of you for setting an example for me to serve my country. However since I never was a good swimmer, I joined the U.S. Air Force. :-) God bless you all. |
