Comments:I am a 36 year old teacher in North Carolina, originally from Massachusetts. My father is Robert L. Finn, who is a USS Pirate survivor and still alive today at 77 years old. He resides in Barre, Mass. As a history teacher, I have taken special interest in the sinking of the Pirate. The Web Site was helpful and quite impressive. Although I have heard the stories from my father long ago, it is surreal to see the maps, photos, and CO's report. God bless al of you who made it through October 12, 1950.

Comments:I am the only child of Adrian Warren Johnson, who went down with the USS PIRATE and is listed as MIA. As 1st electrician's mate he was below deck when the ship was mined and had no chance of escape.) See my entry under "USS Pirate" in the "Korean War Project" pages; and also my entry under his name. His widow, my 82-year old mother in Houston, has bitter memories of what she called a cover-up in the official report of the sinking; she went to New Orleans to meet with a survivor (an officer? I don't know) She said that the man said the Pirate had sailed unseaworthy; apparently he said corners had been cut re-commissioning it. My memory of her telling this is vague as I was only a child when I heard her say this, but I do remember that she used the word "cover-up" about what she learned in New Orleans, and I have the notion that my father may have written her in his letters about conditions belowdecks in this ship, and she showed what he wrote to whoever it was she talked to in New Orleans. My mother ( a retired teacher and library clerk in Houston) might be willing to talk to a reputable historian or the editor of these pages about what she learned in her questioning about the sinking of the USS PIRATE; Usually she does not like to talk to people so you'd have to convince her that an interview would be for a serious historial purpose. Contact me for her phone number if you would like to ask her for her account.

Comments:My Brother-in-Law, and mentor, Lt. Deward V. Sloan (Ret.) was aboard the Pirate when the incident occured. At that time he was an ET2, and was badly wounded, but thankfully he recovered and went on to attain a rewarding Naval career. Sloan passed away in 2004, in Gautier, MS. Without his coaxing to join the Navy I probably would have ended-up working in the textile mills in Fall River, MA. for the rest of my life. Thank you Sloan!

Comments:Very interesting. My grandfather Phonsie Howell or (PH) as he was know as then, served on minesweepers. He often talked about knowing many of the men on the Pledge and Pirate. I think he served on the USS Mainstay. He was a Master Electrician. He also stated that he would stay on different ships to help fix any problems. He was from Live Oak, Florida. I have many pictures. I hope we can share info... Thanks and God Bless... Chuck Howell
