The Frances Hodgson Burnett Resource Guestbook

wouldn't you know it... as soon as i said i couldn't find anything, i stumbled upon exactly what i was looking for!
the quote is: ""Near this spot in 1869, was the early Knoxville home of Frances Hodgson Burneth, the English born author of the Secret Garden. Sarah Crewe and Little Lord Fluentleboy who moved to Knoxville with her family when she was 15. When Frances was 20, her widowed mother died here leaving her children alone here in "The Riverside House" where they established an informal community of Musicians and artists they called Vagabondia Castle. Her son Vivian later described it as a "Rather roomy but dilapidated house with a backyard running down to the Tennessee River. As Vagabondia Castle, it became the very center of enthusiastic youngsters who were glad to think of themselves as Bohemians... Burnett's first novel Vagabondia, drew its spiritual setting from her experiences. Some of Burnett's later stories featured East Tennessee settings."
and you can find this and other interesting information at:http://travel.nostalgiaville.com/Tennessee/Knox/neylandgreenway/neyland%20greenway.htm

Great site! I'm a huge fan of Burnett and I have been reading up on her life. I used to live in Knoxville and there is a big rock on the waterfront that has a quote by her etched into it about her desire to start a artist commune called Vagabondia. I have always loved that idea. I wish I had taken a photo of it when I was there because now I cannot find anything about it.

Sept. 12/08 - I watched "The Little Princess", and it touched my heart so very much. I have just completed chemo & radiation treatment and now am in remission but it's been a touch year. Today my husband's grandmother passed, but we know she's with Jesus and she's no longer in pain. Thank you for this biography and for giving us a wonderful evening watching such a touching story. God bless you, Ellie & David †.

Happened on this web site and I am a big fan. As a child my 3 favorite books were Little Lord Fauntleroy, Secret Garden and A Little Princess. I read Secret Garden 13 times. As an adult I was surprised that she had written other books and have begun a small collection. I love T. Tembarron and think it would make a great musical like Secret Garden has!

I've watch The Little Princess and The Secret Garden during my younger years..It is something that inspired me a lot...to dream nice things and beleiving that it will come true. Last Sunday, I went to a bookstore and found a novel of the secret garden. It never entered into my mind that the movie I watched years ago was based from a book. Its very nice...very inspiring, and I love it.

Well done on this site. I'm about to pop an FHB book on eBay (this is NOT a plug). It's not a first but it is one you don't have a cover illustration for, or have listed in your bibliography (specifically). Please feel free to let me know if you'd like to know anything else about it before I sell it in about 10 days time. You are also welcome to any images I have.

I to loved books by FHB. They got me through some really tough times. Now I am good friends with her Great Granddaughters. We were friends for quite a few years before I knew. This was so exciting for me because I survived because of the escape of these books. She is named Robin after her Mothers favorite character in the books.

Hi, was reading up on some of the online bios of Frances Hodgson Burnett. A novelist friend in the states knew her grand daughter well. He told me that whereas many bios say she became a spiritualist that that is not what her grand daughter told him. She said that her grandmother became a student of Christian Science and introduced the family to Christian Science. That would be quite different than spiritualism.

I'm researching for a book to be called Champion Lancastrians about well known people who were born or lived in Lancashire and your site has been a great help for my chapter on Frances Hodgson Burnett. Many thanks. I would also like to use an image in my book. Do you know who holds the copyrights to the pictures on your website?

Hi Ingrid; I found your site while researching of all people, Ms. Burnett! In particular I wanted info on her book "The one I knew the best of all". I got a copy through Ebay and am reading it now. The English edition does not have a date and your site says 1993, in London, but I think she may have written it 10 years earlier in the U.S. Are you able to verify this for me? I was sorry to read she was villified because she happened to be a woman ahead of her time. Pleasure to view your site. Sincerely, Ms. Sonia :)

Just received and read "The Room at the Top of the Stairs" -- rare Frances Hodgsen Burnett. LOOKS like it's for kids, but is a REALLY CREEPY gothic novel about dying/dead children! Does anyone understand?

I am Amy's dad and am proud of her. I can't read much any more but I used to when I was younger. She is building me a website but it had to be dismantled to do it in a different format so as to not take up so much space. Bandwidth etc.
