Comments :Great to find a web site relating to my home village, Cwmfelinfach. Would love to hear from anyone who remembers me or my family. We lived at 3 Mill Street. I have a brother, Gilbert, and sister, Gaynor. We all went to Cwmfelinfach School, Gilbert and Gaynor then went to Ynysddu Secondary Modern and I went to Lewis School, Hengoed. I left Cwmfelinfach in 1964 when I married and have since lived in Newport. My heart is still in Cwmfelinfach.

Comments :I worked at "Switchgear" for about 6 months in 1951, lodging in Blackwood Road Pontllanfraith, and have fond memories of the railway to Newport which I used sometimes to go home to Bath. Managed to go underground at Oakdale pit at the time. Fond memories of the area, the Maxime and Capitol cinemas in Blackwood and the fine fish and chips from next the Maxime cinema as I walked home to "Ponty". Those were the days. Paid a nostalgic drive thro on a trip to Blighty in 1993........not the same.

Comments :Born and raised in Blackwood until 1992 when my parents moved me and my brother to America. We used to live at 21 Bloomfield Rd (right next door to the post office). I miss Wales every single day and hope to move back one day. Most Americans don't even know where Wales is, so I've kind of taken it upon myself to educate them. This web site is wonderful, it's so nice to be able to feel conected to home. Can't wait to come back for a visit in April. If anyone still living in Blackwood or used to live there wants to talk just email me.

Comments :Great website! I am looking for information on any of the descendants of Erasmus and Martha Green, who were living in Sirhowy (No. 21 Alex Place) at the time of the 1901 census. Erasmus was a Local County Court Bailiff Worker, and Martha was a postmistress, working from their home. Their children at that time were: Florence M. Green Female 15 Post.Clerk Worker, b. Sirhowy Erasmus W. Green Male 14 Coal Mine C.Hewer Worker, b. Sirhowy Benj. Green Male 12 b.Sirhowy Mary Ellen Female 10 b. Sirhowy Wm. Arthur Male 8 b. Sirhowy Erasmus's father, also named Erasmus, emigrated to England from Kilbeggan, County Westmeath, Ireland. The rest of his brothers and sisters, and his parents, all emigrated to Canada around 1835. The Canadian descendants of this Green(e) family would like to get in touch with Erasmus's branch if possible, to share family history.

Would be interesting to hear about them. I try to revisit Gwent on a regular basis. Thank you to the valley people for their acceptance of the London evacuees. We may not have survived without them.

Comments :You know how it goes, you can take the girl out of Wales but you'll never take Wales out of the girl. I was browsing the web and found this wonderful site when I was feeling a pang of Hiraeth. Anyway I was born in Pontypool but brought up in Blackwood and went to school in Ynysddu, as my father and grandmother had. I can still remember playing on the 'Patch' and finding that the imagination created all kinds of wonders on that small piece of land. I went to Cwmfelinfach Junior school and recall with fondness the nature walks and the tree that I helped to plant on the side of the place that was Nine Mile Point Colliery (where my great grandfather worked). I drop by this site quite often to look at the photos and see if I recognise any names... Thanks for creating such an enjoyable website..you've made a Welsh girl very happy indeed.

I wonder very often what has happened to my school friends and workmates, maybe this excellent site is a way of finding out. Have returned to Wales many times over the years (family) but sadly have lost touch with many wonderful people over there.

Comments :I read this page about 2 a month primarily to remind myself of the community my family and I lived in for nearly 80 years .It has changd Grandfather Dr Howell Evans practiced Medicine from his home in Cwmgelli opposite the site of the railway goods yard from the early 1880's His house can be seen in Photographs of this taken from the foundry hill ( the last on the left side . His practiced expanded and he opened other surgeries. One I believe was in either the Flue or Pengam .They were closed later and another in Twynfald Road . He had been Joined by his son Arthur who took over Dr Armstrong's practice in Pontllanfraith and by my Father (Dr. William McKendrick ) who married his Daughter Dorothy. The Cefn Fforest surgery was run by my Father until his death in 1942. and then by Dr J.A. Cook who later became my sep father. I joined the practice in 1954 and lived there until I migratd to Alberta in 1965 wher I still live though I hav retired from Medicine 1n 1995.

Comments :My father (with the Royal Canadian Engineers)(who will be 84 this summer),was sent to the Blackwood area in 1941 (we think)to learn to manufacture parts for trucks, etc. He stayed with a family Matthews (or Mathews)in a row house from which he could see out the back kitchen window a large house in which a judge lived. He can draw a map of the whole area but cannot remember the name of the village. He got off the bus at Blackwood (said the stop just a small building with a toilet)(still stopped here in the 1970's,my brother travelled with him), went between buildings and then walked to this area. He was there 6 months(not with a whole unit, just himself and about 3 other fellas). I travelled to Blackwood this past summer and was unsuccessful in locating this place. He mentioned Pontlanfreith (often)and at the last minute said something about the Crumlin Valley (there is a village Crumlin, so....). I'm hoping to go back this March Break for one last look. If anyone has any info or suggestions, please let me know. Thank you.

Glyn,Ivor,Vera,Jim,Dwyn,Ern,Horace,Meg,Olwyn and Seth who lived at glanhowy until his death in 1993.A younger brother died but I do not know a lot about him? Only Glyn and Ivor survive today and ANY info would be very much appreciated.I found this site totally by 'fluke' but what a revelation it has been.Carry on the excellent work and don't take any notice notice of 'The English' from Swansea!!!!!!! I have a Welsh Mother and Father along with 3 welsh brothers and although born in Shropshire I have been brought up Welsh with all its true traditional values of hard work, friendship, loyalty and most of all the appreciation of a GOOD PINT!!

As convenor of the Welsh Interest Group of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists, I have been endeavouring to interpret an entry extracted from the 1901 census. Place given is FUHOWY could this be SIRHOWY ? Appreciate if someone could email me their thoughts. We have also been delving into the meaning of CWTCH - interested to read the four entries in Phrasebook. Many thanks for a great web site.

Comments :Sadly, I have visited most of the places mentioned on this site, and found most of them to be complete dumps! The people I found to be amongst the rudest, most vulgar, ignorant, and unfriendly that I have come across in all my world travels. Most seem to be criminals, and/or permanently out of their tiny minds on drink/drugs, etc. However, your website is quite well done, so don`t let me put you off - it`s just one man`s opinion (to which I am entitled!).

Comments : Visiting your site is like visiting my favourite fishing hole. There's always something fresh to catch. I left Wales in 1961 but still return every year. My father is 93 and is working on his family history. His grandad William T. Lewis was born 1n Mynyddislwyn in 1848 but lived in Trelyn in 1881. His kids were William, Lewis Emrys (my granddad) and David. Later, in Caerphilly he had three more children, Bryn, Daniel and Wyndham. Wyndham was well known as a mountain fighter. My only claim to fame is that I was selected over Alun Pask for the Welsh Secondary Schools rugby team in several games in 1954-55, a mistake which I'm sure was later much regretted. If anyone trolling your site who could help me I'd apprciate it. Brian Lewis Lewdel@shaw.ca

The third, on the right(heading north) between Bedwellty Pits and Tredegar is still there but I dont know it's name. I would be interested in hearing from anyone that knew the Davies family.

Comments :My father just turned 82 this past Thurs. In wishing him a happy B`day he mentionned some names I`ve never heard, I`m almost 53. They were cousins of his he had NOT been close to since my birth. He IS NOT nor WAS EVER big on 'family stuff'. This was news. One of these long lost souls thot of him enuf to send him thier granfather`s vitals. This man, Richard Powell was born in Tredegar S. Wales, April 17 , 1855! Well that has been more info about our line of Powell`s EVER! Also, he married a woman anmed Elizabeth Ashton on December 2, 1879 in Cardiff. If anyone here can point me in a direction for more precise data, it will be most welcome! I intend to come for a visit and a look in a year or 2 & it would be great if having living relatives nearby, we could meet. I,unlike my father love this family history stuff and now knowing that he have a date, & place of both his birthand his wedding allows us to do things like find this web-site. We still have the wnader bug so none of my kin live near one another one in S.Carolina, another in Georgia, one in New Orelans, another in Chicago and the last in Coloradp near my folks and me ,well I had to get away form it all, & Alaska was far too cold so for tha past 7+ this Powell is in Hawaii, along the sunny Kohalo Coast of the Big Island..the one with the active volcanoes! Whoever did this site seserves a round of thanx as now that I know where this line of Powells sprang form I can get some clues to what we missed and maybe why they came to the US! My best mate is Robert Morris another Cwmfelin lad and himself now living away in Sheffield. We both went to the local primary school then on to Pont Comprehensive. I left school in 1980 and worked at Oakdale colliery until 86 when I then joined the Army. I'm now living in Preston, Lancashire married with two daughters. I'd like to hear from any 'Cwmfelinfachers' who may know me and my family. My cousin is the snooker player Darren Morgan. Two of my brothers also moved away from Cwmfelinfach. One now lives in Malta and the other in Dublin. I could go on, but I'm sure you are bored already.
