Comments:Bill, The old school is north on the city center off Dej Haile Silase St. If you can find Churchill Ave on Google, go north until Cunningham, then turn right. Go a couple blocks to Eden St., turn left. (I think this is where Charles De Gaulle Square was, but I don’t see it now) The next circle on Eden is Arada Sq. On the north side take Dej Belay Zeleke St. (highway 3). After several blocks, turn right onto Dej Haile Silase St. About 200 ft on the left is a small street with trees on both sides of it. The roof top to the northeast corner is the Junior High building and the one to the northeast of that, across the wide grey road, with lots of big trees, is the high school. That big grey/ brown spot behind them is what is left of the old school building. It was there a few years ago, so it lost to the new building just to its north in the resent years. Have fun trying to find your house. That whole area is unrecognizable! Thanks for keeping this stuff going Steve.

I can remember most of the route the bus took from our house, up Churchill Rd and making a left turn at Enricos Cafe onto Wavel St, and I recall that from there we drove about 10 to 15 more minutes toward the west, but can't find the old compound. If any of you who remember better than me can tell me where the old school was, please fill me in! Email me at wmdwiseman@hotmail.com Thanks!

I was in the 5th & 6th grade class of Jill Mathies. Some of my classmates were Alex Henze, Mark Purcell (now in law enforcement in the Santa Barbara area), Pancho Mansfield, Triston Gillete, Karen Abernathy, Pam Orr. I remember the "estate" the Henze family lived on and their Rhodesian Ridgeback that hated me! I am currently living in Mendocino county in Northern California in the town of Potter Valley. I work as an assistant winemaker for Mansfield wines in Napa California. I recognize a lot of the names on this site and remember many of them as partners-in-crime with my older sister Becky! Would love to hear from former classmates. What an experience! David Ruiz

Congrats. Looks like a few nurses too. No major changes in my life, except hitting 50y/o this past year, & of course kids getting older. I still have young kids playing competitive soccer-big bucks-so we don't travel except to tournaments, & so far my kids aren't on national type teams leading us to DC or anywhere else for that matter. I keep in touch with Pamela Kleanthous, but am still wondering how life turned out for Jackie Lamb, & Annika Heintzen. I've talked to Sara Kent Goldman who lives in CA. It is a small world, so don't go anywhere topless, because you will run into someone you know!!!! Happy 2009 to the world, & pray for peace quick. Where is Barrett Travis, & Michael Vineyard, & Curtis Blake?

The dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. (local time) and last until 9 p.m. Dress will be "business casual": tie and jacket for men; dress or pants for women. Ethiopian Airlines has been extreemly generous in agreeing to sponsor the dinner. The meal will include a variety of traditional Ethiopian fare. Alcohol will not be served. (no tej?) As you know, being at the Ethiopian Embassy places you on sovereign territory, and therefore the guest of that Nation. INVITATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR ENTRY ON TO EMBASSY GROUNDS U.S. National and local media have been notified to this event. The Chartered buses leaving from the Marriott Hotel to the Ethiopian Embassy (and returning to the Marriott) will cost $14.00 per person. On the return trip it will pass by several National monuments (times and other information to follow). There will be a CHAMPAIGN CRUISE on Saturday, June 6 Reservations for the Champaign Cruise on the 7th (lunch time), will cost $70.55 per person (a discounted rate), and $10.00 per person for the chartered bus ride to and from. The price includes an envronmentally controlled private (group) dining room and a glass of Champaign . There will be a Cash Bar. A minimum of 70 people is required to hold the private room. Aside from the security issues at the Embassy, RSVP is crutial in providing the planners with the number of people who will be attending each event allowing them to determine the correct number of dinners to be served and number of buses required for transportation to and from the respective events. Please respond (quickly) with a check for the fees for the chartered bus (to either or both events..please specify) and for the Champaign Cruise. Please send those payments to: Mary Burney/Wild Blue Travel P.O Box 1455 Clarksville, Va. 23927-1455 and specify the intention of your payment. Also note that there is no refund if you cannot attend. Please do not make Cruise reservations On-line A slide show of ACS yearbooks will be shown during the dinner portion of the banquet at the Ethiopian Embassy. Copies of the yearbooks from 1964, and 1967-1974 are available on CD or DVD at this link: (MMStore). All proceeds from sales of the CD's or DVD's go toward maintaining this Web site. I would also like to mention Jessica Fortin. Jessica is the registrar, admissions and alumni coordinator at the International Community School. The ICS Web site contains information about ICS and a survey that allows you to submit your email address and ACS/ICS profile information. In summary, this is what you need to do: 1) Let me know that you’re going to attend the reunion and if you will be attending the dinner at the Ethiopian Embassy and/or the Champaign Cruise. 2) Make transportation arrangements. 3) Book your rooms at one of the hotels. 4) Send a check to Mary Burney to cover the Potomac lunch cruise and charter bus fees. 5) Show up!! Comments:Peace...I attended ACS from 74-75(class 79). My dad was with MAAG. I was in the 6th grade, my teacher was Mr.Funk.I just checked my classmates page and found Matthew Funk...his son.Addis has been with me all these years, but it seems like yesterday. It is a 'magical place' and will always be special to me. I share with my children the stories and they are so intrigued. What really gets them is when I run across many Ethiopians in this area and am able to communicate with them. They always ask me "Mom to you have to speak to every Ethiopian you see?"...and of course the answer is "yes".I will never ever forget and know the blessing to have lived there for such a short time.I plan to visit again some day and take my family with me. Dana Polk,I remember you.We were the tallest girls in our class...and if my memory hasn't escaped me you had red hair.I also remember Becky/Rebecca...saw you on classmates as well and on this site also.Edward Fortenberry and I have also communicated. Well, it is beyond great to know you are all out there.

Comments:Hi all. My wife Karen and I were faculty 1975-1977. We speak often and fondly of our time in Addis and at ACS. The small school community was really a great place to teach and to raise two small children. I now work for IBM and my wife continues to teach. We live in the Daytona Beach area. Would love to hear from any and all past ACS students and faculty. We have kept in contact with Lance and Carleen Scholt - of NAMRU.

Comments:Ok... might have messed up the 1st one...lol... I attended ACS, with my older brother and two younger sisters, from 72-75. I was in 4th thru 6th. My dad was in the Air Force and worked at the MAAG Hqts..I just love reading all the posts. I looked at the pictures... honestly... either I have gotten old, or boy, I do not remember ACS looking so "fancy", where are the armed guards on the roof tops?.... the water fountains that have the paper sign "do not drink!"... HUGE army ants in the "playground" .....All seems way unbelievable to my two boys, but was at that time, reality..... I still loved that place....Everyone was together as one!.. no matter where you came from.. Lake Langano... that was the best time... everyone was there, even though, which as a kid, I never understood why the different branches of military were seperated?.... We, of course, were in the Air Force Section... does anyone remember that guy that used to, at night (when it was pitch black), come out with the burning/glowing sticks behind his ears, holding in his hands, and feet... he looked like a bear...he was the guard at that "lake langano compound", and he would do that every night to scare the kids.... too funny, but worked every time..... oh the memories!... I have seen some classmates that I recognize their names on that classmates.... whatever web site but it is impossible to contact them..Does anyone have a copy of the year book from that time period... 72/73/74/75?... I really wish my parents would have gotten one for me. I would love to hear from anyone... my brother, Steve, was a 79' graduate,,, Elizabeth was a 83' and Kathryn was a 86'.... btw... this is an awesome website.... Ranya

I will attend, along with my wife and I will let my brother Kevin, and sister Kathy (both of whom attended ACS as well) know of the reunion so they can attend also. The opportunity to visit the Ethiopian Embassy sounds great and a perfect opportunity to investigate returning to Addis and the lake region to witness the changes that have taken place in 37 years. I look forward to seeing many of you again. regards bdh

My memories of high school are the richest and most thought provoking of my entire education and youth. My classmates, fellow students and teachers were the best and the countryside and adventures were incomparable (that is probable too many ands, but this is not for the final grade). I hope each of you who attended ACS remember that time, that place, those people and the wonderful experiences as fondly as I do. regards bdh

Comments:Dear fellow ACS/ICS alumni, faculty and current students: This is the letter you have been waiting for – the details on our 2008 reunion. Several people have been working behind the scenes to bring together this reunion, and I want to assure you that it is going to happen. Details follow, some of which require almost immediate attention. The reunion will be held in Washington, D.C. on June 6 and 7. The designated hotels for the reunion are both in Crystal City, VA: the Crystal City Marriott and the Hilton. Both of these hotels are near a Metro stop, giving us maximum flexibility in travel. We would like to avoid using vehicles, since it is difficult to drive and find parking in the city. The Marriott Hotel link is http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/wascc-crystal-city-marriott-at-reagan-national-airport/. You can call the hotel and book a reservation or use hotels.com, or orbitz.com, or any other hotel reservation engine you are familiar with. It would be easier if everyone is in one hotel, but I know that will be difficult. The room rates are $139.00/night or you might find a better price through some other mode. Our reunion dinner will be at the Ethiopian Embassy on Friday evening, June 6. The dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. EST and go until 9 p.m. EST. Dress will be “business casual”: tie and jacket for men; dress or pants for women. We are looking into the mode of transportation, and more than likely it will be by Metro. On Saturday, we are planning a two-hour lunch cruise on the Potomac. I am working with Mary (Banyas) Burney on the details. I know a lot of people will be going on the cruise, and we will need to book a special room by Feb. 11. We are going to set up a reservations contract for the Champaign Cruise (lunch time), and it will cost $70.55 (a discounted rate) per person. This includes everything except items from the bar. We need to have a minimum of 70 people to hold the room, so after you get this email please respond quickly with a check written to “Wild Blue Travel” for $70.55/person. Send the check to Mary Burney to Wild Blue Travel P.O Box 1455 Clarksville, Va. 23927-1455 Please note, there is no refund if you cannot make it. To view the cruise details (only), go to . Do not make reservations on line! I have been working with Lee Miller on an entertainment production for during dinner at the Embassy. Lee has been instrumental in scanning in the yearbooks from 1966-1974, and we will be viewing them throughout the evening. Lee is planning to sell the disks, and he will use the money to maintain the Mapping Mission website. I do not know the cost, but I am sure it will be worth purchasing a set. To purchase the disk(s) go to www.ethi-usmappingmission.com. I will need to have the names of everyone who plans to attend the dinner at the Ethiopian Embassy. Your name must be on the list to gain entry into the Embassy. Remember, when we are at the Embassy we have entered Ethiopian sovereign territory and we are guests, just as if we were in Ethiopia. The reasons for the list of names are threefold: to know how many will attend, to prevent people from walking in off the street and joining the festivities; and finally, security. I’m very pleased that the Embassy has offered to host the dinner and even more excited that Ethiopian Airlines will be sponsoring the dinner. The catered dinner will include traditional Ethiopian and American foods. Alcohol will not be served. I will be contacting all of the local TV networks to advise them of this event. I will send them a statement and hope they will report it. The world will have some good news, for a change, instead of death and war. I would also like to mention Jessica Fortin. Jessica is the registrar, admissions and alumni coordinator at the International Community School. She has a website that contains information about ICS and a survey that allows you to submit your email address and ACS/ICS profile information. I recommend that everyone visit the site and enter your data. Here is the link to the survey http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=O_2bOyNJbYx2c_2bsg9vumL5VA_3d_3d. To visit the ICS alumni website use this address http://www.icsaddis.edu.et/alumni/index.htm . Please forward this email to anyone associated with ACS/ICS and your family members so that we have a great turnout for a guaranteed great time. In summary, this is what you need to do: 1) Let me know that you’re going to attend the reunion and if you will be attending the dinner at the Ethiopian Embassy. 2) Make transportation arrangements. 3) Book your rooms at one of the hotels. 4) Send a check to Mary Burney to cover the Potomac lunch cruise. 5) Show up!! It took me several years to accomplish this, and I'm not shy at asking for remuneration. If Twenty bucks is too much for you, you can always steal them off of the Web site. Bob Chapman provided the 1960 book, Kevin Sullivan provided the 1973 Yearbook, Larry Schneider the 1971, 1972, and 1974 editions (I ripped a page in Larry's 1974 book which will haunt me to my death) and I already had the 1964, 1967, 1968, 1969, and 1970 books. All of the money that you might send to pay for these CD's will be used to keep the ethi-usmappingmission Web site up and running as long as it can. I've put together a PowerPoint Slide show for Larry Schneider to show at the 2008 Reunion but I can't include that in the CD because Microsoft/PowerPoint has copyright issues. Comments:Tonostolin- THIS IS GREAT!... reading the notes and remembering some of the names of the friends of Ethiopia. My father was stationed with MAAG from '73-'76. My sister Lori('83) and I attended ACS during that time. My wife and youngest daughter just took Mom and Dad's photo album of Ethiopia and scanned the whole thing last year. We gave Mom, Dad & Lori digital picture frames for Christmas and put those pictures on it. They love it. I hung around with Steve M, Dwight B, Mike L, Pete M, Jay F, and others who I'm sorry I can't remember their names. Those were certainly the "wonder years" of my life. When we left Ethiopia, we moved to ND. My Mom is from a little town in the north central part of the state. Dad retired a couple years later from the AF and went to get his degree. That was cool, I had the chance to go to UND with Dad for a couple of years. I married my HS sweetheart, Carol. We've been married for over 23 years now. We have three children. Two of them are in college and the youngest is still in HS. My kids are (a little too) familiar with stories of Ethiopia. I recently found ACS on Google Earth. TMF. Steve Vance - thanks for taking the time to put this site together. Best, Steve Gurule Class of '81

Comments:I can't tell you how many times I have thought of my childhood in Ethiopia. I decided to google and found this site, what a trip that it exists! My father was MAAG during the early and late 60's. I attended ACS in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade. Even though I was very young, my memories are strong and still bring many smiles. It was a magical time and a beautiful country. Camping at Lake Awasa, the hot springs of Sader Ray (sp?) the trips to Harrar to see the Hyena man, and trips to Niarobi; anyone remember these or were part of them? My dad and his friends used to get trips together all the time. I will have to look up my yearbook, as my friends faces appear in front of me, but the names escape me. I refuse to believe it's been almost 40 years! If anyone knows of any other websites available referencing those great years in Addis, please let me know. Especially if there are pictures. I live in Neptune Beach Florida now. Would love to hear from anyone that went to elementary school during '68 -'70.

Comments:Hello, I was a little guy back then. My family was in Addis from 66-69. I attended ACS and was in 3-5 grade. Fond memories of those years. Have a brother and two sisters that went as well. We did some camping with other families to Lake Shala and Langano. Took a few trips to Asmara, Missawa, Asab as well as many other places. Something made me flip the globe a few weeks ago on Google Earth and do some zooming into the country as well as Addis and then my brother finds this site recently. Ethiopia opened many windows in my world as a young boy that later would take me to other places and travel for work. I live in Clearwater, Fl and hope to plan a trip to Ethiopia some time. Like to find old classmates, even the bully (I'm going to kick your asphalt ), a girls hair I use to pull, (sorry). I'm over it also. HAHA Those were good days, thanks for the website and the ops to communicate here. Hopefully there are many good years left!

I attended ACS the first two years the new school opened - 1966-68 and I was in the 5th and 6th grade. My father was with USAID and I rode the AID bus with the Cowpers and the Beans. Good friends of mine from ACS days were Elaine Scott, Paula Saffron, Diane Waldron, and Becky Shaner (sorry, those are the only names immediately coming to mind). I also had a very good friend at Good Shepherd, Carolyn McLain. Lee Miller, of course, was in my class and he and I have corresponded off/on since finding each other here (I still have fond memories of the last day of 6th grade and his band playing "House of the Rising Sun" at least ten times! yeah!!!). Anyone who might remember me from that time, pls e-mail me. I loved my time in Addis - I am sure it had a great impact on my eventual career choice (State Department) and my return to Africa in the early 1980s (that time to West Africa). Look forward to hearing from some of you! :)

My name shows up on the list of "Class of 1963" which is correct for my graduating class for high school. I can recall a list of people who were at the school then, some were taking correspondence courses for grades 10 - 11 - 12, and some were dual students at the French Lycee in Addis or were in Asmara at Kagnew Station. Comments:i went to ACS from '65 to "67, was there during the move to the new site behind/near the country club. i remember the french fry lunches at the mapping mission, and the "quaint little house" up the road that served cheap beer, a great lunch site that should have remained secret. i remember the very cute biology teacher, uncle bill dated her...that smooth sob..and the does anyone remember the purple foot prints across bills car? he spoke some really great french/english/egyptian that day..can any one put on a blue oxford shirt, hounds tooth pants and a black knit tie and not think of Hanna? does anyone miss the tang of bleached cooler water? was anyone able to see and remember the silver jubilee parade and flyover? and the saturday dances at MAAG? how about the italian club bowling ally and ICE CREAM and slot cars/gocarts? slots and pinballs...my dad is the one who fixed and put together those slots, noel and i helped...and noel learned the machines good enough to supplememnt his income for a while.. the bands? EVERYONE was in one of the bands at one time or another...i came across an irish band here in DC they called themselves the Rouges as well, same misspelling, must have been a commie plot..i too remember seeing all the state heads and royalty, including bobby kennedy, and have told others here not to be believed...it was hard coming back to the states with all these stories and being looked at like i was an alien..so i stopped telling them...there is enough of us that with all the memories, some of us should get smart and put together a book of short stories...ANYONE LISTENING?? i met paul tsongas there (near langano what a great lake!) and ran into bill clinton AND his side kick george in london in '68! i thought it was a "normal" life! and would last forever...then the reality of wonder bread and cheese wiz hit me right between the eyes back "home" took me years to recover..now, in DC i run into ethiopians every day, and surprise them with an amheric greeting...DC is full of ethiopian grocery stores, and retaurants and they want the area north of dupont labeled "little ethiopia"!the girls are still pretty, the guys still smile easily. i have an aloe plant(S) taken from a 2000 year old plant near the ogeden should have bought more gold....what was the name of the pizza place near the piaza? and remember the cappichinos there? or the armenian shish kabob? shoe shines while sipping coffee, mercato trips and rbber tire sandals, fiat flat nose blue and whites, traffic circles, arat and sidist kilo, sneaking kisses and what ever in the balcony at HS theatre, yes! the addis ababa, empire, and what was the other tin roofed theatre in the piaza? beer ANYTIME we wanted, funny smoking stuff othertimes, villa verde, ras hotel, ibex club, what was the one with the bad disney motif ? with the spanish hookers? they danced nice, and would roll you later...and the new dace club on the 2nd floor by the empire theatre? ( ok new in 67..) do any of you GUYS remember the little whore house on churchill on the left just up past the french school? nice girls.. the galla girls near langano? how they looked cute, smelled like hell? geri carts..cobblestone streets, traffic circles, international fairs, the chinese circus, the great chinese exhibition, the failure of the american exhibition. kennedy's funeral observation at the embassy, and when the astronauts visited.. i left in 68 with good memories, before the crap started...but could feel it coming. i hope ethiopia becomes great as it was in those days. thank god i had the chance to live there, life would never have been the same or as rich...we would never have it as good again.
