http://www.myspace.com/peaceful_planet I came across the web site nearly two years ago, starting to be vegan. Since then, I've worked on raw foods, yoga, and sprouting. I've come back to your site, though, because it's so good! There's a lot to learn, but I encourage everybody to search out a better, healthier way of life. It doesn't matter where you start. Even the coldest heart gets warm with love.

I am a vegan married to a meat-eater, and yes, it is possible for a vegan to be in a relationship with a non-vegan. It is called respect, I do what I feel is good for me, I don't have the right to impose this lifestyle to anyone, including my husband.
I wish you and Denise much happiness.

http://www.myspace.com/liblady1 I DON'T KNOW IF YOUR SUBWAY IS DIFFERENT, BUT ALL THE ONES I'VE BEEN TO HAVE EGG WHITES IN THEIR "VEGGIE" PATTIES. I just noticed that the "vegan-friendly" restaurants page said that you could get a Boca burger there, which I've never found to be the case in years of Subway inquiries.

Just wanted to let you know if you didn't, already; I know I was disappointed when I found out.

Thanks for this great website! I just recently went vegan from being vegetarian for four years, and I was looking for something more than the boring vegan outreach and peta websites. This was exactly it-- intelligent, casually written observations about the vegan lifestyle, not just lists about animal ingredients to avoid.

Thank you for this website and for being a vegan-supportive omnivore!

http://Spectauclar I think that it is so awsome seeing a meat eater acctepting veganism as if he were one himself. You make me feel not so bad of eating animal foods and not feeling like crap afterwards. I thought I knew everything about being a vegan being one for 5 months, as it turned out i dont know crap. I barely scraped the surface. I was never a true vegan as I once believed. I have laether on my purse, use animal tested products, and I dont know all what else I do that is against being a vegan. Embarissing thing is I was one of those people who complained of other vegetarians, saying that just going half way is wack, go all the way! But thats way... easier said than done. Anyway, you educated me a lot on this stuff, i thank you and salute you.

Hey! I am a new vegan and found this website while surfing on the internet. I have become a vegan because somehow it sounded right. I won't suggest that this is a very valid reason but I have started doing bits of research and what I found was awful, I had no clue(well I did have some clue) but I never thought SO MANY animals were killed every second just to please mankind. The thing is, I told my mom about this decision and(I'm underage) she was first ok with it and then started ranting and accused me of trying stupid things without believing anything. That's what get to me and I started learning more about veganism. This certainly is the correct option.
p.s. My name is Denise too.:)

Your webpage is great. It is very funny. I laughed a lot!!! Thanks. I've been married to an omni for 13 years and I have been a vegetarian for 18 years and vegan for 3. Recently, I got involved in a San Francisco based vegan organization. I enjoy my interaction with other vegetarians and vegans. However, my San Francisco vegan group tried to ban my husband from their events, even though he supports veganism and does not eat meat or diary at these events. I’ve been told by several of these vegans that I should get divorced and trade in my husband for 5 rescued cats. I liked your description of militant versus tolerant vegans who accept different points of view. Your website does a wonderful job lightening up, in a very intelligent way, a very overwhelming and highly charged issue.

Hey, thanks for the great page! You do a great service for vegetarianism and veganism. Sometimes I think meat-eaters are so conditioned to think that the words "vegetarian" or "vegan" mean really bad that they don't give new food a chance. Re: living in a mixed house (meat eaters and vegetarians)
I am the mother of 3 meat eating males and both my daughter and myself are vegetarians. My husband will only eat REAL meat so therefore I have no choice but to purchase it for him, my 3 sons are more easily fooled by the veggie meats that I purchase, although I do still allow them to eat meat. It is very difficult have your children on vegetarian diets (unless they choose to) because they are subject to meat eating people ie. birthday parties that order pizza, hotdogs etc. I don't find it difficult to live in a mixed house of meat eaters and vegetarians, we just cook what we want for us and cook a different meat for them.

This is an excellent site! I have been a vegetarian for about 5 months now and feel ten times better. For the past couple of months, it has been kind of hard going out to eat with friends who are still meat-eaters. I'm glad I stumbled upon this page!

For any scientific geeks out there like myself, I would like to recommend a good read that provides EVIDENCED BASED data (scientific studies) on the benefits of being a vegetarian vs. not. It is called The China Study by T. Colin Campbell. After I read this book, I was sure that I had made the right choice, and had evidence to back it up.

Thanks again for the sit!

Hi, and congratulations on a really great site!

I became vegan this past November, after having been vegetarian for 5 or 6 years. I feel like you answer a lot of the most relevant questions people have, and I have forwarded this address onto friends and family who are still a little mystified because I think it's both helpful and funny! I was reading parts of this aloud to my housemate/friend earlier.

I did want to say that there is GOOD vegan cheese out there... I'm trying to figure out what brand, because a Asylum http://www.asylumdc.com/ near my house here in DC serves an awesome vegan brunch on the weekends and they melt something mighty tasty on their chili/tofu scramble! I would also add Peanut Chews to the vegan junkfood list :)

Best wishes on your new life together!

http://www.cocoapetes.com I have been eating chocolate called Cocoa Pete's Berry Berry Dangerous. Dark Chocolate with dried strawberries. It did not list milk products and is very good in my opinion. I contacted the company and asked it their product was vegan and they stated that its almost vegan except for the cane sugar, which is processed using bone char.

I suggested that they switch to Michigan or midwestern sugar companies that processes beet sugar, which does not use the charcoal filtering process. http://www.cocoapetes.com

My husband and I just converted to vegan last Sunday. With the help of sites like this one, it's made the transition easy. Finding substitutes for items I've eaten since birth, that taste just as good, has been rather easy. We even went out to eat twice and stuck to our new eating habits. We made the decision to go vegan due to health issues. I found out I was borderline diabetic and with heart disease in my family I needed a healthy lifestyle change that I could adapt to forever. I'm enjoying it thus far and I thank you for your input. Your site is great, I reference it every night for dinner.

I found most of your website very interesting and have sent a link to my twin brother vincent elgey (who is vegan and also likes bucks fizz). I am considering converting to veganism myself after listening repeatedly to the bucks fizz vegan anthem "If you can't stand the heat", with it's strong anti-meat eating undertones. Vincent Elgey (me) aka Vince Elgey, will let you know how he (vince elgey) gets on with his conversion, and will hopefully get his twin vincent elgey (brother vincent elgey) to send some of his Bucks Fizz inspired vegan recipes to you for inclusion on your site, (which Jay Ashton has personally approved). There are many kinds of insects and worms found in vegetables. Usually they are killed off at the source using pesticides. If pesticides are not used (organic) then they are killed off by the consumer while washing the veggies or when the veggies are eaten. Since vegans don't even eat honey then how come they have no problem with killing the hundreds of harmless insects found in most vegetables?

hey red meat man.. if the market were not propped up the ultimate result is that more land would go back to being wild and the economy could shift the economic savings of cheaper food to something more interesting. This sounds pretty good to me. Sure, the simplistic arguments often advanced don't wash, but that doesn't mean that over all the change might not be for the better for other reasons.. plus, a whole bunch of animals wouldn't die.. perhaps a day wil come when no human intentionally kills animals for any reason at all.

I love red meat
Tuesday, September 2nd 2003 - 05:19:35 PM
meatlover@vegans-suck.com
Having spent three years at Tufts University, I have often been confronted by a certain group of campus activists for my consumption of red meat. Some believe it is an unethical food source, some believe it is unhealthy, and some feel that animal products should be eliminated from one's diet altogether. "Regarding ethics, a vegan diet eliminates a tremendous amount of killing," claims Vegan.com. Replace the words "a vegan diet" with "adoption," and this same phrase can be used to argue against another type of "killing." Ignoring the ethical issues, which can be debated to no end, and ignoring the health arguments, which are also very debatable, I choose to consume red meat because it helps the economy, specifically the farming industry.

As the United States farming industry has become more efficient, it has also become able to produce more grain each year, even in the presence of extreme weather conditions such as droughts. The influx of grain into the market has caused prices to fall and has hurt some farmers. Leave it to the government to combat the laws of economics by setting a floor on prices in an attempt to "help" those who were hurt by the naturally falling prices of grain. Even a Harvard undergraduate can see that the price floor set by the government will cause a surplus of grain to flood the market and will hurt even more farmers. Farmers won't even be able to give their crop away because the government's oblivious economic policy would make it illegal. In order to maintain the price floor, the government must pick up the slack by paying certain farmers not to grow grain, thus eliminating the surplus. In 1999, the government shelled out over $17.6 billion in farm subsidies to maintain this inefficient price floor, which brings me to one of the main arguments in favor of a vegan diet: efficiency.

According to www.chreese.com, a popular pro-vegan website, producing one pound of beef requires between eight and sixteen pounds of grain. The grain is used to feed cows before they are slaughtered and sliced up into oh-so-delicious pieces of steak. According to the Department of Agriculture, the average citizen consumes 115.1 pounds of red meat per year. Using the information provided above, this meat could be replaced with anywhere between 920.8 and 1841.6 pounds of grain per year. That's a whole lot of grain. To the uninformed, this sounds like a great idea. Eating less meat means more grain for everyone. World hunger could be ended and everyone would be happy, right? Wrong.

Let's consider the economic impact of the grain that would be "saved" if everyone were to switch to a vegan diet. Assuming a person would consume close to the same amount of food per year, the annual 115.1 pounds of red meat could be replaced with 115.1 pounds of grain. There are several sources of grain in the United States, but for this example, consider corn as the substitute of choice. By consuming corn instead of meat, anywhere between 805.7 and 1726.5 pounds of corn would be left in the marketplace, per person, per year. Using an American population count of about 243 million, this leaves between 195.8 and 419.5 billion pounds of corn that would go uneaten. If the economy was unhindered, the price for corn would plummet, and once again farmers wouldn't be able to give the stuff away. Instead, good old Uncle Sam would decide to step in and subsidize the farmers losses, thus maintaining the precious price floor. At a current market price of about $0.04 per pound of corn, the government would have to write a check for between $7.8 and $16.78 billion every year. This isn't exactly pocket change. The government would either be forced to cut funding to their beloved programs, which rarely happens, or raise taxes, which often does. Raising taxes would not only anger the average conservative, it would also hurt the same economy that the government was trying to help in the first place.

Some may argue that the surplus of grain created by a vegan diet could be exported to developing nations in need of food. This "solution" would not change the economic impact experienced by a purely vegan diet. The government would still be required to pay farmers for their excess production and would also have to cover the cost of shipping the grain to countries in need. This would add an extra tax burden to the US economy and would solve nothing.

So the next time someone tries to tell you that "meat is murder," tell them to mind their business and go back to their thrift-store-wearing, welfare-draining group of deadbeat activists and complain to someone who cares. You're helping the economy.

I've been vegetarian for four years and have recently adopted the vegan lifestyle. I've tried it before and got frustrated because everything seems to have animal products or has been tested on animals or whatever, and I ultimately gave up. It doesn't help living in NC where we have hog farms galore and everyone eats meat and potatoes. I've now come to realize that having a results oriented approach as opposed to an indgredients based approach has eased my transition. Animal products are virtually unavoidable. There's animal products in roads and buildings (cement), bike tires, books (glue), camera film, the list goes on. So am I a hypocrite for riding a bike or taking a picture? Of course not. Instead of trying to be "pure" and stress about things like that, I take satisfaction in knowing that I'm doing the best I can with what I have available to me to end animal suffering. In changing ourselves, we are changing a part of the whole of the human race. The idea of veganism, in my opinion, is to take action to end the suffering of animals, not obsess of lists of ingredients and argue about hypocricy and who's "right" or "wrong". That would only continue the sterotype that vegetarians and vegans are judgemental and uptight. That is not the point and will only make others oppose veganism more. The point is that creatures with emotions, families, and social structures suffer on a daily basis, and I am only one person deciding not to partake in that. So by doing the best I can with the resources I have (which aren't many if you're in college), I feel good knowing that if I eat something with casien in it or some refined sugar or whatever, that all the other products I have bought and consumed that were vegan have helped in the fight for animal rights and I am not wrong for slipping up once in a while. I wouldn't think that unless animal products weren't so abundant in everyday life in America or any other industrialized country. But it's a fact that they are. Hopefully someday that will change. Animal suffering will not end quickly, and it will take many baby steps to help them. A lot more people would probably be vegetarian or vegan if they took this approach to it instead of the extreme and often frustrating approach of feeling stressed when there's some animal derived chemical in their food. Relax and know that your doing your part. And for any meat eaters out there who enjoy meatless alternatives, every veggie burger or soy dog or pint of Toffuti you eat is helping too, so your not all that bad after all ;)

I just wanted to let you know that some of the things that you listed as vegan are not. You are correct in your defintion of veganism, but I am not sure that you realize that sugar is not a part of the vegan diet. Most sugar, unless otherwise stated, is refined using animal bones. This process is not conducive to the vegan lifestyle. You might concider one who eats sugar refined in this way as a vegetarian.

Just a few comments on the Cons you list under Veganism. As with everything, perception depends on the pair of glasses you choose to put on.

I have found, for example, that Veganism gets easier and easier as time goes on. At first, finding "specialty" products, as you call them, was a real chore and quite frustrating. Once you find sources for these products, however, your work is done and grocery shopping is not any more difficult than for anyone else, even here in El Paso, Texas (where vegetarians and vegans are an alien breed). In other words, the initial investment of time and effort can be quite taxing, but it fades to nothing in time. The same goes for restaurants. In El Paso, there are no explicitly Vegetarian, much less Vegan restaurants, though there are a select few that list vegetarian items on their menus. My wife and I have over time discovered many restaurants that cater to our needs, and some have even added a vegetarian section to their menus thanks to the local Vegetarian Society. As you add restaurants to your list, it becomes easier and easier to dine out--the key is to ask questions about food content with an unapologetic yet positive attitude. Most people react with curiosity and take an interest in your philosophy if you portray a positive attitude.

As for worrying about whether there are animal products at every corner (your example was "in your computer"), I think this is different for every Vegan. I think of Veganism as no different than any other ideal or religion (religion here defined as any belief system that informs your life decisions and motivations, instututions aside). Ideals by definition are impossible goals in the face of reality (in this case, the reality of the industrialized world). I approach life with the understanding that Veganism (the refusal to exploit animals and the earth in a way contrary to natural cycles and systems) is an ideal state that I will never completely achieve(if I choose to be a viable member of modern society). Instead, I live my life at peace with the thought that I am making an effort. My goal is to never stop looking for alternatives to that which seems impossible to circumvent. This sort of continual effort may seem to get in the way of Life to many, but I firmly belive that Life is most fulfilling when one's actions are in alignment with one's beliefs, whatever they may be. So, in conclusion, my life is not filled with the constant agony of "is there animal products in the keyboard that I'm typing on?" but rather, with the constant satisfaction and fulfillme
