| Comments: | Found the site trying to locate an old CFI(also NJANG Thud pilot)friend--Dave Draper.
Worked the old tower in the infield 73-76. Tom Emerick-TWR Chief- Pop Sheely-Rapcon Chief. Most of my time with Matt Smagner-Team Sup. Also remember Leo Miller and (I think) Otis as team sups also. Got my BS at TSC, Out of the AF and hired on at MIA ARTCC all in June 76. Got my PP at the Aero Club and later went on to Comm. and CFI ratings. C-150's were $10 an hour-wet and CFI's were $6 at the aero club. We originally had 60 C-141's assigned to the base but one crashed in Spain leaving 59. Went home from the tower one day and everything was normal, about 45 planes on the ramp. Came in the next morning and the ramp was empty with 3 tails sticking out of maintenance hangars. The decision to bail out of Viet Nam was the reason. In addition to the MAC 141's, SAC kept 2 or 3 KC-135's detached from Loring, NJ ANG had an F-105 Thud unit and a C-7 Caribou unit. Ft. Dix's aviation unit was adjacent on the west side of 18-36 taxiway and had about 8 to 10 helos and 2 or 3 small twins. The aero club, managed by Dick Cherry, had 10 planes. If I remember right, 6-150's, 2-172's a Cherokee 180-D and an 200 HP Arrow. Dick was unusual in that he was a designated examiner and didn't have an IFR rating. He came from a crop-dusting family and had over 20k hrs as a duster pilot. |

| Comments: | Absolutely loved working at Mcguire from 1988-1992. Duel rated in the Tower & Rapcon. What fun times and great friends. Especially the mud pit volleyball in RO's back yard. Jumped to the dark side and now being controlled, flying for American. |

| Comments: | Hi Everyone,
I'm an OLD old timer. I worked WRI RAPCON between 1957-1958. I just happened upon this great site. I worked approach control from the triangle area. No computer strips in those days. And the New York Area GCI site was located on the base in those days. That was very secretive stuff then. I was hopeing to see some old photos but I see that the photos have been removed. Any chance of putting them up again for a really old timer to see? Regards to all, A.J. Anyone ever hear of Pat Murphy, Jim King, or my crew chief SSgt Larry Beal ? |

I was a Rapcon/Tower controller between 1976 and 1981. Was part of the transition moving in the new facility from the old facility that was located in the middle of the triangle. Worked with some great people, Chief Tom Emerick (like my dad). Bob Maciaszek, Richard Fleckenstein (which probably still holds the record for the most amount of aircraft saves) If you know me, or would just like to know how it was 30 odd years ago, write me. I'd be happy to answer. AE |

| Comments: | I just stumbled into your site, and just thought I would leave a little 'thank you note'. Please pass this along to your controllers and whoever might have an interest.
On 12/31/06 about 4:45pm (getting dark)I was IFR from ANP to N12 in my Cessna 320 N3452Q when I started having an electrical system failure while going thru Philly's airspace. I could hear them, but was completely unable to reply. I was in IMC at 5000', and gradually losing radios, autopilot, heater, etc. It was a classic 'cascade of failures'. The back-up systems did not work, for a variety of reasons. I did hear the Philly hand-off to McGuire Approach, and was able to reply via transponder "Ident" requests - but I don't know if they were rec'd. Then the transponder stopped working (no more blinking). Even though your controllers could not hear me, I could hear you calling. Thanks for the relentless trying! It was a relief that no one was getting panicky, and I just kept flying the flightplan. When I arrived over N12 I did have just enough battery power to get the landing gear down, but no luck on flaps. I later found out that your staff was able to follow me as I aborted the approach to N12 and headed for BLM, where I landed on 32, 'against the traffic', just as it really started getting dark, with no lights on!! I thought I may have had an electrical system fire, and just wanted to get on the ground ASAP. Your calls to the FBO to follow up to make sure I was down safely were appreciated. I had called the FAA 800 WX number and left a message with them, but they were slow to pass it on to you, or Philly. This is just a very long thanks for a job well done. I could hear you, and the chatter in the background, but you couldn't hear me. Yes it helped me a lot to know that you were following me on radar - just in case someone was in front of me. And, the follow-up calls were appreciated. Best wishes to all!! Dale A. Diamond N3452Q P.S. The electrical system problem was a broken wire on the left alternator, a weak alternator on the right side that could not keep up with the electrical demand, and one battery which had an internal cell failure and could not hold a charge. Everything is fixed! |

| Comments: | Dear TSGT Tom Orland,
You always stood behind me and made me feel like I could do anything. You were always the favorite watch sup. Not only were you our boss but you were a friend. You invited all of us into you home. Embraced us like you would Joe or Jake. Made some of us feel at home when we were so far from home. And everyone I talked to had nothing but the same things to say. I will miss co-ed naked volley ball. I will miss our chats about everything under the stars. I will miss you. Thank-you for everything you have done for all of us at McGuire. Love to you, Joe, Jake, Dyantha, Sissy and the rest of your family. Heaven gets one of their angles back. We love you OD. Nickie |
