Yours in Rotary, Claudete Sulzbacher 2006-2007 President Rotary Club Santa Cruz do Sul # 8844 District 4680 Brazil Matching Grant: Neonatal breather for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Rotary Club Santa Cruz do Sul, District 4680 – Brazil – Club # 8844 is looking for a partner in order to supply Hospital Santa Cruz, in the city of Santa Cruz do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil with a neonatal breather for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. 77,5% of the babies admitted in this NICU are poor. Parents experience overwhelming joy at the arrival of a newborn. However some parents experience periods of anxious worry over this tiny new member of the family. If a baby is born prematurely, suffers from a medical condition or has a birth defect there will be the need of a NICU. A neonatal intensive care unit, usually shortened NICU and also called a newborn intensive care unit, special care baby unit, is a unit specialized in the care of ill or premature newborn infants. NICUs were developed in the 1950s and 1960s by pediatricians to provide better temperature support, isolation from infection risk, specialized feeding, and access to specialized equipment and resources. Infants are cared for in incubators or "open warmers." Nearly all are attached to various types of monitors. Some require respiratory support ranging from extra oxygen (by head hood or nasal cannula) to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or mechanical ventilation. Hospital Santa Cruz is a philanthropic hospital, branch of the local university, UNISC, always doing the best in order to improve the facility with equipments. To provide quality care to all neonates, this 8-bed NICU, that is a Regional unit, and nowadays has 8 beds and 4 breathers, urgently requires at least one more breather, because sometimes a baby needs care, the bed is available but there is no breather available. It means to send a baby to a hospital at least 150 km away from home or death. Please note this NICU is almost always with full capacity. Premature babies usually require the breather for months. It’s a breathing machine that is necessary for some infants to help their lungs develop and heal, so breathing more easily. Cost for one breather is US$15,162.79. = LEADING THE WAY TO LIFE = | |

| Additional comments: i'm not computer savy and had a difficult time getting through the email. anyway i've attended several rotary club in area and am contemplating of joining; however i have several issues before i make the commitment. my father has been a rotarian for ages this was ancient time. before they allowed women. anyway what i'm about to ask is unusual.i was born and lived in hong kong years ago in an orphanage in kowloon. i was adopted by an american family from california. it's been over 30 years. i've wanted to visit hong kong and trace my roots, if possible. however i can't afford to stay in a hotel. i have limited income and two boy i'm supporting in college. would someone or members willing to sponsor me? in exchange i'd be happy to recipicate the favor if someone or families would like to visit anchorage, alaska. i have a house they can stay at and i'd be happy to be their tour guide. it;s a beautiful state,land of the midnight sun, especially summer(may thru august). our vast scenery, fishing, hiking, and i could go on and on. winter is good if the person likes winter sports or the beauty of the norther lights, bar none to anywhere. the japanesse visits alaska in winter to view the spectacular northern lights. anyway i'm not a bad person. most people like me when they meet me. i work for the state of alaska as a social worker for 11+ years with two boys in college. it would be a dream come true to visit my birth place. many of my friends think i will be disappointed since it will be difficult to seek my past. i only ask for a place to crash out, however if someone or persons willing to give me a tour that's even better. i can explore the area on my own or meet other people and develop friendship. if you want i can be a speaker for your luncheon and talk about issues pertaining to our beautiful state or bring news on the happening with other rotarian in the area. if you wonder whether i speak chinese the answer is no. i regret not maintaining my language but that's the price i pay. if anyone of your members be interested in making a new friend and helping me in this endeavor i'd be in hog heaven, a dream come true. i can give them more of my biography of myself. they can email me or write to me. thanks for letting me write this. by the way your website is comical. i didn't know foreigner have humor, ha. i don';t think the gateway rotary have a website. my email is sue_lovekin@health.state.ak.us or my home address is Sue Lovekin, P.O. I had to look at your site many times to catch all the humor. I've bookmarked it to look at for some laughs.All I know about Hong Kong is watching Bill Holden and Jennifer Jones in "Love is a Many Splendored Tning". Is the Hospital still on top of that Hill? When I was in the service I took an R&R to Hong Kong for a week. All I saw was the usual tourist sites, and ate on a boat somewhere on the water. As I recall, I found a Russian resturant while walking around which had the best Borscht. Have never had it since. Keep up the great site. I probably would join if you were here in Nebraska. | |
