Comments:I couldn't post on the two year date because I just couldn't do it. There has not been ONE SINGLE DAY that I have not thought of "charlielilly", all one word for everyone who talked of him in the music circles. I "visit" him often in the songs we wrote together and still miss him , Billy, Bettie, and Danny all the time. But when I get down about it, I remember what 2 Corinthians 5:8 says; "We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord." and then I think, man, it don't get no better than that!! I also think about when my time comes and Charlie meets me at Heaven's Gate and says,"It's about time, what took you so long?" I also think God will get us off to the side and tell us,"Listen, we are NOT going to put with you two pulling stuff up here like you did down there!"I KNOW I will see him again and this time, it will be forever!!
It's going to be an awesome thing!!
Remember..."Let Go...and Let God....and above all...be Blessed!"

I can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, but I can remember two years ago with the clarity of HDTV, but not with the convenience of fast-forwarding through the bad parts. Every other day, when reflecting on the whole senseless turn of events, we tend to talk about everything being part of the "plan."

I'm sorry, but today there are no words of wisdom. Today just hurts.

Comments:Karen, Andrew and Aaron,

As we approach the two year mark of Charlie's passing,
I tend to look at May 21st as Charlie's "new birthday."
He lives on...and Heaven is a sweeter place.

Love you all,
Miss Carol

Comments:Remembrance is a golden chain
Death tries to break,
but all in vain.
To have, to love, and then to part
Is the greatest sorrow of one's heart.
The years may wipe out many things
But some they wipe out never.
Like memories of those happy times
When we were all together.

Comments:Hello to the Lilly Family and all of their friends. I accidentally came across this website while browsing through the internet. It brought back fond memories of hearing the Lilly Boys sing some of their father's and uncle's songs at a festival in Utah a few years ago. Their version of the old song, "There'll Come A Time," raised the goosebumps on my arm. It was one of the most sincere and soulful performances I've ever heard. I wish that I had gotten to know Charles better than I did. He was a wonderful singer. Merry Christmas to everyone from an ardent fan of the Lilly Brothers (both old and new).

Comments: Charlie was The Best Friend I ever had. I had known Charlie and his family for over 20 years, and played music with him and Everette over the years and can remember when I was first starting out the encouragement he bestowed upon me, I loved him like a brother and his beautiful wife Karen who was always so sweet.
I moved to nashville in 2000 because of Charles, because I missed him so much, I will always remember him for the wonderful person and talented musician he was.
I thought more of him than a brother and I will always miss him. It's a great loss and tragedy to me and all the people who knew Charles. I know your up there lookin' at us down here Charles. Heaven has gained a great singer and Bass player and you are sadly missed by us all.
With love,

Comments:Has it been a year, or ten? There is not a single day that goes by that I don't think about Charlie, not one single day. We finally finished the CD project he & I started back in May of '05. It was both good therapy and sorrowful at times, but it is finished. It is amazing how many people he touched in his life. But because I truly believe what I say I believe, I KNOW he is at a better place than I ,and I hope by God's Grace, I get there too one day.

Thank you Debbi Rigdon for keeping this page going and updating it. I know how close you, Clay, and Ali are to the family as well.
Yes, it has been a long and painful year, but one day I'll be seeing Charlie, Billy, Bettie, and Danny again when I too start "My First Thousand Years".

May the Blessings of God be on everyone.

Possibly one of the best practical jokers I've ever met. He had an out-of-state roommate from MD convinced it was a law in the State of WV that you had to put your right hand over your heart when John Denver's "Take Me Home Country Roads" played on the radio.
Truly one of those people who always left you smiling. My thoughts are with Everett, Mark and the family.
If a true friend is better for knowing, then I am, for knowing you.

They overcame so many obstacles,,,especially during the EARLY years (when she was so young :-) i have luved karen all my life and grew to love charlie. There was never another man Karen ever truly loved or wanted to be with all of her life. A love that deep and true is rare and I saw it in her eyes and I knew it was in both their hearts. Many years and two fine boys later, the love story remains one I think of and wish one of the players was not gone but he is without a doubt not forgotten. That love story remains in Karens heart and you will see it in Charlies eyes when he is looking down over her and the boys from heaven...I luv ya Buttwheat..come see me, we can get you some Peanut Butter Fudge !!!!!

Comments:I was just thinking about him today. Charles still occasionally performed with us (the Lilly Mountaineers) and that was always special. We all made a trip together to a folk festival in Utah a couple of years ago. On the way to the airport Charles and banjoist, Marc Pruett, stopped by the road so Marc could draw a sketch of an old barn out in a beautiful field. Marc later painted a picture of the scene and gave it to Charles. Charles would also want us to remember our brother, Tennis Lilly, who was also a fine musician and who passed away just a few years ago. They were real close and no doubt they are together again. I miss you both and I remember you every time I play. Everett Alan Lilly

Comments:I first met Charlie in 1987 at a music store in Beckley WV. I worked in the store and Charlie would visit us and tell jokes. Sometimes he'd play the banjo and I'd say, "Charlie, you're drivin' me crazy with that thang!" Occasionally I'd go listen to him play at local gigs. It's been almost 20 years since I first met him, but I still remember Charlie...and I'll never forget him.

Comments:Life goes by so quickly. Charlie and my friendship went back over 17 years during the time I was living in Daniels WV and singing with my various bands, working on albums, doing live TV specials and just having a great time! Through all of this, Charlie was my friend and made me feel a genuine part of the Lilly family. He would visit me at my Guitar Repair shop and we would swap tales of the road and he would usually drop an instrument or amp off for sale or repair. We took a great trip to Kentucky with several of his brothers and along the way, a strange tale of an owl was created (remember guys?). When Charlie and Karen moved to Nashville, I was thrilled that he was getting his chance at the golden ring! Life moved on and I moved away as well and we were out of touch. I became a Minister and Charlie became a true Country Music star! When I saw the headline about the accident on CNN, I was instantly transfered back to our times together! The gigs, the bus trips, the home times. I am so proud to call Charlie my friend and to have been blessed with his presence in my life. Karen, please know that the famly is in my thoughts and prayers each and every day! I am so thankful that I found this site! The world has lost a true gentleman, but Heaven has gained a great musician and human being! God Bless you Charlie! Thanks!

I've met Charles a couple of times on different occasions but being up in Mass., there isn't too many times to get together. The minute I met Charlie, I told my wife I felt like I knew him instantly. We talked on occasian, and we got talking about going to Bristol Motor Speedway and I told him that would be awesome if we could hook up and go. He called me and told me he had tickets and we went. That was in April of 2005. We had an awesome time with Charlie and his best friend Tony and we couldn't wait to do it again in 2006. I almost was not able to come back to Bristol, but I changed other plans because I did not want to miss the time with him. Charlie, Tony, Scott, Kurt, Andrew and I went to the racetrack on March 26th 2006, to find ourselves in the middle of a snowstorm. Again we had another awesome day. I can't say enough about " The Gang ". We will never forget the great times and look forward to seeing you Charlie in the future. I luv ya and will see you again, Steve

We also had the chance to see him that year at the Midnight Jamboree and filling in with Joe Diffie at the Opry. As a musician, I was impressed by Charlie's talent on the bass and with his singing ability. However, anyone who saw him perform would also be impressed by his personality and zest for performing. Comments: My deepest sympathy goes out to the Lilly and Walker families. We are forever linked in our sorrow and in our hearts. This tragedy has brought together strangers who might otherwise never have known one another. I know my brother was very fortunate to have great friends like Charlie and Mr. & Mrs. Walker. I am grateful that Charlie was there for Danny both musically and as a friend to help Danny realize his life's dream. There must have been some unknowable reason for this tragic accident -- perhaps God needed a great country band. They say God "only picks the prettiest flowers," and He sure got a beautiful and talented bouquet this time. God bless us all.
Love,
Jamie Patton

My heart goes out to you and your sons, having went through a tragedy myself losing a step-daughter, I can't say I know how you feel, but I do understand. Just keep your memories in your heart, and keep on keeping on. God Bless you and you sons.

Comments: Well Charlie, it's my birthday tomorrow, my sweet 16. My only wish is to talk to you again, so that's what I'm doing now. Charlie, you meant so much to my family, along with a lot of other families. You changed our lives. Without you, my dad wouldn't be the sucessful musician he is. My mom wouldn't have made a bunch of new friends, one of which is your lovely wife. You helped moved my grandmother into our house, and built an apartment for her. You were with me at my first gig, right behind me the whole time I was on stage. You gave me the courage to sing in front of a crowd. And afterwards, you shook my hand, gave me a hug, and told me to keep it up. Well, I have. And you still stand behind me everytime, with your hand on my shoulder, giving me the courage I need. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you and what you did for us. Charlie, your legend lives on. You're still with us. I love you Charlie.

Comments: Our deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers go out to the family of Charlie Lilly.
I first met Charlie a few years ago at a bluegrass festival in Elizabeth, WV when he arrived from Nashville with a motor home for his father. This was a surprise for Everett and I will not forget the happiness between father and son that evening when the vehicle was presented to Everett by his son. Charlie wanted his father to travel in comfort to future shows that would be performed by Eveett and the Lilly Mountaineers. He was especially happy each year when he was able to join his family on stage at the annual Lilly Reunion for this gala event.
On the evening of the day following Charlie's funeral, Everett Lilly and the Lilly Mountaineers performed at the Vandalia Performing Arts Festival in Charleston, WV and a packed theatre heard a father lament the loss of his son to a tear-filled audience. It was a difficult appearance for Everett and his family but we all understood what he meant when he said, "Charlie would have wanted it this way." Somehow it gives a whole new meaning to the words, "the show must go on."

I was hoping I'd meet you someday in Nashville, but it'll have to wait til I get to Heaven. It's not what you take with you, but what you leave behind. For me, I have a little something to always remember you by, whether or not my songwriting dreams ever come true. I am blessed and honored to hear your sweet voice on some of my music. Now Heaven is blessed and honored as you sing every day with the rest of the Angels singing the praises of the Lord. My thoughts and prayers will always be with your family.

Comments: When my husband & I met Charlie several years ago through my son, Clay Rigdon, we met someone who was so down-to-earth and so easy to get acquainted with that you couldn't help but love him. He had a great sense of humor and showed it at the very beginning. He treated us like he had known us all his life. We didn't feel like strangers around him at all. Some months after we met him, we went to see him with Billy & Bettie Walker & Danny Patton at the Orange Blossom Opry in Weirsdale, Florida, which is about 80 miles from where we live. We spent a lot of time with them back stage after the show. We told Charlie that since he and Clay were such good friends, and since Clay didn't have a brother, that we were "adopting" him as our son. He said he could deal with that and gave us both a big hug. We truly loved Charlie and will surely miss him. May God bless Karen & the boys and give them the strength and courage they need to sustain them through these hard times.

Comments: Miss you Charile! You were one of the most kind hearted people I met in life. I only got to be around you for a couple of years, but the memories I will carry forever. You and your wife helped me out years ago and opened your home to me for a short time and helped me out in a time of need, not many people would do that, and I will never forget. Charile you made me smile and laugh. I enjoyed working with you at the boat shop back when you first came to Tennessee. I'll never forget going with you to Beckley WV and going snow skiing and meeting your family. I remember your father and him playing a song for me that my grandfather use to play. I remember giving you the only pet I had since a child my Shar Pei dog Chopstick I had in college. I knew your family would take care an enjoy him. I couldnt think of a more loving place and family to have given him to. I never owned a dog since, and was happy to share him with you and hope he brought my laughs to you and your family. He was only gift I really had to give at that time. You had a special gift to bring a smile and make people lives better, not many people have that gift, but I will always carry the memory of you and your family with me. The people we meet in life help shape who we are and touch our lives. Im happy I had the chance to know you and brightness your brought to mine.

Comments: It is so difficult to say goodbye to Charlie. Likes others have said, he was like a brother to me...and we met through music as I made various appearances with Billy Walker and the Band. I have put some "remembrance photos" on my website--- www.lynnbeckman.com --and a lot of fond memories are behind those pictures and many, many more in my mind. I loved Charlie's sense of humor and, of course, his professional talent and dedication to a song. He sang harmony with me when I appeared on the Midnite Jamboree with Billy at the ET Record Shop. It was unrehearsed...but it sounded rehearsed. Charlies delivered musically, and he loved his craft. On behalf of myself and my wife, Mary, we extend our heartfelt sympathy and prayers to Charlie's family and his many friends and fans. Our shock and saddness remain... and our love is extended.. May God Bless... Lynn Beckman (and Mary)

Comments: Unfortunately I was on the road playing when all this happened and while I had such a longing to be at the funeral, I could just hear Charlie saying "Man don't you give up a paying gig". It's just the way he was, never thinking of himself. I had a lot in common with Charlie - we were both from the Beckley WV area and we were both bass players so we never got to work together in a band. I saw him at Lowe's in Beckley one Christmas and we laughed because we lived only a few miles from each other in Hendersonville, TN but we both stayed so busy it seemed like I ran into him more on the road and in Beckley than I did in Nashville. The last time we spoke was about a month before his death when we were both eating at Demos restaurant in Hendersonville. Like many meetings before we both vowed to call each other and get together and I regret not taking the opportunities I had to spend more time around him. It was always a pleasant encounter when we did run into each other and I will miss those times. There are no words to describe the great person he was and I will always remember the fun times we had hanging out together backstage at the Opry. He always joked with me about getting all the good gigs but he was the one who always had the good ones. He had the talent, personality and looks to be an artist himself but he never seemed to want to be the one in the spotlight. Like most of us he loved to play and rarely turned down the opportunity to do so, but in the past few years he was becoming a successful businessman with his construction business. His honesty and character would have made him successful in anything he wanted to do. I just want to say to Karen and the boys that my grief is great and I cannot imagine what you must be dealing with. As I'm sure is true with all of Charlie's friends, please let me know if there is anything I can do for you. And to you Charlie, here's hoping we get to spend some time together on the other side.

Comments: I am both sad and heartend at the same time...I am sad for the family and friends that are left behind to grieve the loss of such a wonderful man. (I say man, but I do remember Charles more as a young boy roaming the Clear Creek area). I remember Charles during the times I subbed in his classroom at Clear Fork...he was a total ham, and entertainer even when he was being himself. My thoughts go back to the last time we talked...I had moved to Virginia (across the Potomac from Maryland) Charles was coming to the Baltimore Arena to play in the Joe Diffie show, and he got me 4 tickets, front row...the show was excellent, and Charles took us backstage and we talked and remembered the old times and friends at Clear Creek---then Charles took us over to meet Joe Diffie...I enjoyed meeting Joe, but the star of our night was our friend, Charles. When we said goodbye that night, I never dreamed that the next time we would have the privilege to meet would be in 0ur afterlife, HEAVEN.
Charles is certainly more blessed than we, but it is sad to think that we won't be able to sit and talk to him face to face down here.
I would like to think that Charles is with his heavenly FATHER waiting for his friends and family. Good night down here...Good Moring in the tomorrow...

He was a true gentleman, but he was also one of the best practical jokers you would ever come across. As Johnny Russell would say, "This is Charley Lilly, the flower of the flock". I never, ever remember not laughing and having the best time whenever Charley was around. He touched so many, so I feel honored that I was blessed with the time that the Lord gave me with my friend Charley Lilly. It was too little a time, but we have to take the moments we get and cherish them, and I will always do that. I pray that God will put his loving and healing arms around Karen and the boys, so that they may some day find some peace in their loss. Charley, I hope we get to play a shuffle together again someday.

He and I often had deep spiritual talks and told each other how we felt. To say I will miss him is an understatement. But I do know with all my heart the Charlie is with the Lord in Paradise.
I can only hope I will be able to touch half the people that this man did.
His family meant everything to him and came before his career or anything else. Charlie will live on in the two fine young men he taught and raised, his sons.
I consider it a blessing from God that I had the opportunity to know and work with Charlie and miss him every single day.

Comments: This whole tragedy seems like a nightmare to me. I watched Charles and Karen practically grow up together. They shared a LOVE that many people only dream of experiencing once in a lifetime. They made each other complete. Charles was always playing practical jokes on people, but that made him the person that he was.
The last time i saw him, he gave me a big hug and I promised to visit him and karen and the boys in September when Glen returns to Vanderbilt for a doctors appointment
.But now,....................September will not come for Charles.
So now, we all have to pull together and lend support to his family. Karen is, and always will be, special to me. She was 4 or 5 when I married into her family and she always seemed like "my little girl." Charles left 2 young men who have stood up to the plate and been the men that their mother needed and I am very proud of them also. Charles, you have earned your crown and heaven has gained a remarkable angel.
I LOve You and Miss You,

To making him and Mark sing to me on the way home from school on the bus. To the armory for our big "battle of the bands" with the high school band. I could go on and on. I am so thankful that I got to see Charles when he came to Harrisonburg VA with Joe Diffie. We had such a great few hours rehashing old times. All though we hadn't see each other for years it was like it was only yesterday. That's the way Charles was, once a friend always a friend. He has touched so many lives and will truly be missed.

Comments: Charles, I truly loved you like a brother, and you were a great friend. A wonderful entertainer, and so much more. I can close my eyes and still see you pulling up in that big bus when we were on the golf course, and you came off of the bus carrying your golf clubs and said let's play boy's. And the time the guy accidentally threw his club in the pond, and you said look out I'll get it, and you stripped off your clothes and shoes and jumped in the pond and dove down and got his club, and you came up and said I got it. And you got caught because you wasn't suppose to be in the pond. You were a barrell of laugh's and I will miss you greatly. You were a special wonderful person, and your memory will live on in my heart and soul forever.
Your Friend Always,
Eddie Toney

Comments: As a classmate and childhood friend from Clear Fork, Charles will be saddly missed. I have found memories of him and the friendship that we shared as kids. It's been many of years since I last seen him, but the memories will last forever. The true sad part of his death is that there were still many people that lives will never be touch by this man. My heart goes out to his "Dad" who use to drive me to and from school everyday and the rest of his family.
