Comments:I read your "Our Gordon Family History" a few weeks ago and the very last line page 2 seemed familiar and I looked up some of my Gordon family history. My Great Grandfather left Drumquin for Australia in 1864 from Plymouth on the Ship Hornet departing 24th October 1864 arriving in Sydney 25th Jan 1865.I have a copy of a letter from his sister dated 25th MAY 1891 refering to the death of their mother.
My Great Grandfather was Thomas Gordon, his father was Andrew Gordon and his mother was Anne (nee Smyth).I believe Thomas had a brother John James.

Comments:Congratulations George, a great website. Although I am still can't quite make the connection between my Moffatts to yours. Catherine Johnston (nee Moffatt) father William Moffatt, farmer mother Sarah Moffatt (nee Nethery) Catherine born Drumquin c. 1824 m 1837 Ireland to John Johnston b. Co. Tyrone c. 1819. I believe they may have had children in Ireland who died in infancy. They also emigrated to Scotland, eldest surviving child William born 1840 Paisley Scotland. Other children born Scotland, Catherine c. 1844, John c. 1845, Robert c 1850, Mary Ann (g,grandmother)27/09/1851, Margery c. 1852, & Andrew 1854 at sea en route to Victoria, Australia, where they arrived either at the end of 1854 or beginning of 1855.
I believe Catherine Moffatt had sisters Elizabeth,m.John Beattie in Dooish Co. Tyrone in 1832. They emmigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1848 on ship "Nelson" with sons, William, Andrew, George & John also with them was a neice Margaret daughter of Mary Hawkes (nee Moffatt) In 1866 a cousin? Rebecca Catherine Nethery aged 4 came to Australia,
her mother Ann (nee Nethery)married Alexander Nethery. Ann did giving birth to her 5th child & Alezander did 3 months later. The 4 boys (2 older than Rebecca & 2 younger) were taken in by relatives while Rebecca came to my Great-great grandparents Catherine & John Johnstone at Lancefield, Victoria, Australia. Rebecca married John Beattie son of John Beattie & Elizabeth (nee Moffatt). It is believed that John & Elizabeth sponsored a lot of relatives who came to the at a place called Aikins Gap. I think this is how my Great-Great Grandparents came to Australia as they arrived on the ship "Mermaid" as unassisted passengers meaning someone had paid for them.
If anyone looking at George's wonderful site has any further information please don't hesitate to write to me.

Comments:My husband Bill is a greatgreatgrandson of William Gordon who immigrated to Philadelphia through Londonderry Ireland on the ship Fanny July 12, 1852. William Gordon married Susan Mclean, most likely in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before August 1859 when their first child was born.
Now that you and I have found each other on the net, I will seriously begin to collect data on this family and leave my family of Irish Frew's who settled in Lancaster County, Pa. alone for awhile.

However, if any of the present Irish Gordon's know any Frew family members in Northern Ireland, please give them my address. My Shaw Frew, along with his wife Eleanor Butler, two children David and James, and his sister Elizabeth immigrated from Ireland through the city of Liverpool to Philadelphia September 3, 1832 on the Ship Montgomery.

It was a pleasure to talk with you George the other day. Bill and I look forward to meeting you in Ireland on one of our trips in the coming years. I have thoroughly enjoyed your website.

Comments:You've put a lot of work into this site, George, I am suitably impressed.
As mentioned to you preveiously, I am interested in finding information on a Margaret Monteith, born "abt 1795", and likely around the area of Stranorlar, County Donegal, or even in the adjacent area of Tyrone.
Have no other information on her, except that she married a Thomas Ponsonby, younger brother to my 3 x g'grandfather, John Ponsonby (1784-1864). Thomas and Margaret (Monteith) Ponsonby had (known) sons James Ponsonby(1816), Thomas Ponsonby (1819), William Ponsonby (1825), John Ponsonby (1827), and George Ponsonby (1838).

Margaret Monteith who married Thomas Ponsonby may (or may not)have been Roman Catholic, as Thomas was; hope she may eventually fit in with the Monteiths you are researching.

Comments:I don't know if we are very distantly related or not, but my great-great-grandfather was James Benton Gordon of Co. Donegal, Ireland He was born in 1796, and he had two brothers, William E. Gordon and David Gordon. Wm. E. Gordon was born in Co. Donegal in 1802. I don't know the birth year for David Gordon.

The three Gordon brothers came to America probably 1815-1820. J. B. and Wm. E. both settled finally in Morgan Co., IL. Wm. E. was separated from them and was thought to live "down South." Can you help identify their unknown parents? Their mother was probably a Benton since that name seems to be common for at least two follow-on generations of both J. B. and Wm. E. Gordon. I'm hoping someone can help me identify their parents and siblings.

Her children married back into the Gordon family - one confirmed as from Braade Co Donegal - see my http://www.mccaskie.org.uk/Gordon.htm
Many future descendants had Gordon added as a second name.
