| Comments: | Steph, I just have to comment after today's entry because it is so much how I feel most of the time. I had to move back in with my parents a year ago. I suffer from bi-polar. Sometimes, I just can't get out of bed and the world is better off if I stay in bed when I feel like that. I look at my sister and others around me and see the kinds of success they've had and I compare myself to them and feel so "less than." And then I remind myself what a miracle it is that I'm still alive. And how much energy it takes just to make it through the day alive sometimes. And my friends tell me what an incredible person I am and how much I have inspired them in one way or the other, and I start to get that my value is not about a job or a place to live or a list of possessions, but about who I am as a person. Except for the "mike" story, I could have written that entry. Word for word almost. And I for one think you are amazing and anyone who has you for a friend is lucky and blessed. |

| Comments: | Hey, I just wanted to leave a quick note. I just read your entry for today. I totally know what you mean about letting the wall down and reaching out to invite love into your life. Seems like it's so easy to be let down. And so many people will just disappear without even an explanation. It is sad that they don't even have enough manners to say hey, I'm not feeling it or something. But I know that a gazillion people read your journal and you touch so many lives. If a gazillion people (just an estimate -- it's probably more than a gazillion!) think you're amazing and are captivated by your life and story, then there is a guy out there who will feel the same way. I know when people tell me the same thing it either a)is hard to hear because I don't believe it or b) doesn't penetrate my thick skull. But I think you're awesome. I think you are living in a place with small minds and not enough fish in the sea, but you're awesome. I can't tell you it's going to get better or that the right one is just around the corner, because no one can tell me that either. I just wanted to say hi and tell you that you are amazing. You give your whole heart -- it's evident in the way you treat your friends, your family, your children (the dogs!) -- and someone out there is going to appreciate that. Don't let the world change who you are. Just my 2 cents (and it might not even be worth that). Peace out -- Janet |

I weigh 320 lbs and some days I have just given up. Some days, I'm full of hope. I lost 50 lbs on weight watchers, gained it all back over the past year. I could not get to your new diary. I hope you are plugging along. You have a great site, a great family and a nice personality comes shining through! |

| Comments: | Hi Steph, I always make time to read your journal and can relate to a lot of what you talk about. Most of the people I know had a horrible 2004, what's up with that? We are all glad to put it behind us. Here's to a fabulous 2005 for all of us, even if we have to create it for ourselves. Good luck with the additional weight loss. I'm still losing, though very slowly. I thought I was done and then BAM! lost another 14 pounds. I've lost a total of 153 pounds and I'd like to lose another 33. Right now, I weigh 213, which I haven't weighed since 1987. I can't wait to see the 100's. Well, just wanted to say hi. |

| Comments: | Steph, I just left you a message on your Xanga guestbook but I don't think it "took". I wanted to say hi and say that I can totally relate to one of your comments. Recently, I found out some news about my boyfriend that didn't look good at all. I was very hesistant to share it with my friends and family because if it was wrong, I didn't want them to hate him. It was hard carrying all that around by myself. For me, I realized that I am soooo co-dependent. I hate that I have made my happiness dependent on a relationship with a man. Relationship going well = Janet happy. Relationship going bad = Janet depressed and suicidal. It's so wrong for me to live that way. I'm working on it now, trying to live my life and enjoy it but still the the man in too. If you want to talk or anything, please let me know.

I think I'm going to do the same thing because I think it will help wake me up to several facts in my life. 1. most days, I don't eat enough, 2. I don't eat the right things, 3. Most of my calories are empty calories. So, good idea and I've already started. I still look to you for how things are going to be in the future... | Comments: | Hello, I think your site is very nice and inspiring. I have been thinking of having the surgery for 2 years, but everytime I start to think about it, I get nervous and scared and stop thinking, but those lows come back where I get so depressed about my weight that gets me thinking again. I'm currenly 5'11 and weigh 340lbs. I hate my body, which intern makes me hate my life. I'm married with a beatiful baby girl, she's 3. She means everthing thing to me, but I cannot play with her like I would like to because of my weight. Mu husband says he loves me, in my heart I believe him, but when I look at myself in the mirror, I think to myself I look so fat and nasty, I don't love myself, how can he. I have been putting alot of strain on our marriege, I don't like to have sex, because I don't want him to touch my body. I have had thoughts of sucided, but I think of my daughter, and mu husband, and those thoughts go away. I have tried several diets, and failed at them all. My concerns about the surgery are, the scar, the access skin, additional surgeries, and complications, will I die from the surgery. I don't want to make myself worse than I already am, I don't want to die from the wls, i don't want to have hanging skin which will make me look worse than i already do, and i don't want to have to keep having surgeries to coorect complications or removing skin etc.. On the flip side I hate my body and the way my life is at the moment. I am very confused, stressted, and frustrated that I don't know what to do. I probably will never hear from you, but your site made me feel comfortable enough to write. CONGRADULATION on your weight loss, YOU LOOK GOOD GIRL!!!! I wish I was you, and had the courage to do what you have accomplished. :-) |

| Comments: | I read your story and found myself almost in tears. Although I'm only 25, I am experiencing the same thing now and I'm trying to fully investigate solutions to end my morbidly obesed nightmare. I have reached a record high in my weight and an all time low in my self image. Your feelings and even some of your experiences are a mirror image of mine. Your wishlist is my daily struggle. But I what makes it more difficult for me is the fact I have two very active toddlers. Your story just really inspired me to not be scared and to make sure I am around for my kids and not eat myself to death. I mostly have gained the weight in the last 7 years and just have not felt the same. I need to do it for my kids if nothing else. But enough about me; you should go ahead into detail and finish your remarkable story and write a book or an autobiography. I'm sure it would be in Oprah's book club. Maybe if you get this and respond I would like it very much if we could chat about it because we have a lot in common. Congratulations! |

| Comments: | Hey Steph......just wanted to chime in on how much you can eat now. I've noticed the same thing and another post-op friend has as well. I am astonished at the amount I can eat without getting uncomfortable. It's kind of freaking me out, but I guess I'm still not able to eat as much as did pre-op and I'm much more active. I have gained 10 lbs from my all time low, which was about 25 pounds under my personal goal. It sucks to have to be 'dieting' again. My friend is having a scope to make sure nothing is wrong and she's going to see about making her pouch smaller. I'm not sure about all the details, but if it was possible, I would probably do it.
Anyway....just my two cents. |

| Comments: | So good to see that you are really living--and I mean LIVING--life. I don't when the last time I took crap by the balls and stormed a bar "just because." Oh wait, I never have. :)
So I went and bought a brand, new 8 dollar open box key board at Best Buy the very next day, after all. My old one was one of those wireless keyboards that can only be blowdried so much. Sigh. Oh, and I was meaning to send you some links to Ambercombie and Fitch. T.H.E.J.E.A.N.S. Hot. Buuuuutttttt... too pricey, and you should see the ridiculous measurements for their largest size (a 12--which I'm not, anyway) which anywhere else would be an 8 or 10. Not to mention, they don't like sizing over their skimpy 10 for most styles. Ah well, nothing I can't make myself with a pair of scissors and a little Salvation Army in my corner. On the other hand, American Eagle has some cute sh*t and sizes higher and more generously. I shall drop the link to the skirt and stuff that's testing my no-money-havin' will power. I only mention all this cause I get the idea that we have complimenting tastes in this arena. In the meantime, take care girl! |

| Comments: | Steph, I just finished reading your journal girl and I wanted say congrats on your successful weight loss. I have been researching WLS for months and have been searching for a journal written by a sista! Lo and behold I found yours!! I love reading EVERYONE'S journal and I take something from each person's journey but to read the experience of another black woman has special meaning to me. I too am a single black woman, and I'd like to know if there were any special hair or skin issues that you experienced and if so, how you resolved them. More importantly, in your last journal entry you indicated that you weren't feeling well. I hope that you are feeling better, and I look forward to reading your next entry. Take care

| Comments: | I WOULD LIKE TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT A LIQUID WHOLE FOOD VITAMIN.
Hello, my name is Linda and I reside in Lethbridge Alberta Canada (LA for short lolol) and I found your website when I was researching for people who have had weight loss surgery done. I thought I would try to contact you. The reason I am contacting is that I too have had the weight loss surgery done, but the procedure is done differently in Canada, but has same results. My procedure was done by a Canadian doctor who pioneered the technique of vertical banded gastroplasty - this does not involve the intestine at all. Anyway, I have had wonderful success and I am a new me. The only drawback to this is now I need a daily supplement of a good vitamin and I am sure that you were told the same thing. Due to the fact we eat literally tiny portions of food, vitamins are extremely important. I have found a vitamin that is just the ideal solution. I have been using this liquid vitamin for 6 months and have great success. I would really love to share this with you and others since you have become so vocal in the weightloss arena. I too want to be vocal about it as well because there are so many people out there who struggle with weight issues and all the health problems that go with extreme weight gain. It is sad and here I am happy and want to tell the world. This liquid vitamin is 98% absorbed when swallowed and is made by a company with a 22 year track record and is not a hoax. The ingredients are of pure natural aloe vera and sea vegetables and there is no artifical or chemical added. This makes this vitamin a possibility to use immediately after surgery. This is why I am so interested in talking to other who have have weightloss surgery about this. I am also in the process of contacting Dr. Wm. John Hollingsworth about this too. He is the doctor who performed my surgery in April 2001 in Cardston Alberta Canada. If you are interested in contacting me, here are my contact details. I look forward to talking to you in the future. Thank you for your time in reading my email to you... Congratulations Julie !!!!! Regards, Linda Verishine lverishine@yahoo.com |

I had been prevoiusly approved through PruCare then they were bought out by Aetna and back to the drawingboard for me. I now have Humana and am back on the road to WLS again now however I need to lose 60lbs first and get allthe other teasting Psych/sleep/blood/untra-sound (Oh joy)But I'm on WW now and I'm already on the road to losing (14 down.
Yours is one of the only sites I've found that a black woman had online. I just wanted to say thank you for your site. Both my mom and my Aunt have had WLS. My Aunt is a (over embellisher) and my mom wasn't in the same state as I early on after hers so I didn't see her ups and downs. (And she won't tell me the bad b/c she thinks I won't have the surgery)But I'm glad I got to read yours. email me sometime you are truely hilarous and I would love to chat with you. |

| Comments: | Your story is so inspirational! I just recently lost 35 lbs on Weight Watchers and was looking for other people's weight loss journies when I ran across your website. Congratulations on having the courage to do this for yourself. You look great and will look and feel even better when you reach your ultimate goal.
Thanks for sharing your story. |

| Comments: | WOW! What an amazing journey! I know that WLS is not the answer for everyone, but I have the point of view that if it helps someone restore their health and improve their life than congrats to them! I'm sorry that your family wasn't more on board with the surgery, etc. It's strange because my sister is overweight (more than I am) and if she came to me and suggested that having WLS would benefit and help her, I'd support her 120%!!! I support ANYTHING proactive that one person can do to increase their well-being and longevity. I can't wait to read the rest of your journey up to the point where you meet your goal weight/body size. Congrats and keep up the good work! Your new fan, Michele |

| Comments: | Stephie, get thee to a chiropractor. May I recommend Dr. Bashline in Flushing. I had a pinched sciatic nerve during my pregnancy and it was miserable. You need someone who understands the back to get this taken care of. Meds will temporarily help. Get to a chiropractor (not a doctor who frowns upon that type od medicine) and you will be a world better! Love you, Stacy |

| Comments: | Just wanted to comment on your entry about the vitamins. I have heard from many that if you put the vitamin in a glass of room temp water for two minutes and see if it dissolves, that will tell you if your stomach will digest it or not. I take Source one complete vitamins, it's the wal-mart brand and they seem to be good. They pass the dissolve test and have never gotten stuck even though they're quite big. While I've got your attention, maybe you could honor a small request that I have. I would like to read of what you are eating sometimes, including amounts. I like to compare with people about how much the stomach can hold and what people are eating and having sucess with and all that. So if you wouldn't mind, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your consideration.
Talk to ya again sometime. |

I'm 6 feet tall and 260 pounds. I've been overweight as long as I can remember. Im too young for surgery but I'm starting to lose weight the old fashioned way, eating right and exercising.
I am so glad you've made this website. Reading your Bio was so motivating and neat for me because I can relate so much with you and the feelings you've had. And you are pretty darn funny too, :) Im glad youre happy, and Im glad you've had such awesome results. Like I said before, you are a true inspiration to me. Keep smiling, and loving yourself. |

| Comments: | Hi:
I love your site. It's beautiful in design and in content. congratulations on your success and your strength. I am 30 and for the last four years, I avoided even looking up info on wls because I was so convinced it was just a gimmick. Well, I want to have a baby. And my obgyn said lose weight or die trying to have a child. I'm a very active person for my considerable size (420 lbs and 5'8"). Anyway, so I started researching and now, I'm in the process. Going for tests, evaluations, ect. The doctor thinks I could have a surgery date in September. My husband has never said anything about my weight until I did, and I think he was vastly relieved. Our quality of life will improve as I can do more of the things he enjoys too, like bike riding and skiing. Between you and me, there is no way in hell my ass, skinny OR fat, is going to go coasting down a mountain of ice. LOL Anyway, I'll be back here often. I'm going to web log my progress and would love to add a link to this site, as I find it very frank and upbeat :) Sincerely, Kat |

| Comments: | First off Congratulations on you weight loss! I know it must feel great but odd at first. When I lost a lot of weight I mentally kept thinking I was the same size. So when I would go clothes shopping I would buy 3XL instead of my size XL. One thing I did want to ask just out of curiousity. Does the Gastric Bypass give you permanent bad breath? My mom told me that but I didn't understand why that would happen. |

| Comments: | I totally know how you feel. I too have the same types of rejection issues dealing with sex. It sucks so bad when someone you really like ends up married. That happened to me about six months ago. He said that he was separated, but that the divorce paperwork had been filed and they were living apart. Turns out none of that was true, and I was discarded. It is so hard to find an honestly good man anymore. I am a single mom and overwieght. Not to mention I live in Idaho, land of the rednecks, and my daughter's father was Jamaican, so I get a lot of the flack that comes with being a white single mom with a colored kid. I don't care though, because she is so beautiful.
Speaking of beauty, you are such a beautiful flower. You have grown so much emotionally and (shrunk) so much physically. Watching your transformation has truly given me hope for the future. By the way, I love your hair. If you could give me a few tips on how to keep my daughter's hair as lustrious as you keep your own, I would truly appreciate it. As dry as the climate is here, no matter how much I moisturize, it is a frizz puff, and she is only three so I can't relax it yet. Thanks, and keep up all of your hard work. You are truly an inpiration to any of us who are looking for hope. You should take your journal, bind it, and have it published. You could also go on the lecture circuit as WLS inspirational speaker. Barbara Thompson makes bank doing that, and she isn't nearly as funny and insightful as you are! Mary Ann |

I hope that you can come to terms with your sex life, and I really hope that you meet someone who will respect you and love you the way you deserve and want to be loved. Good luck girl. |

In any case, I found a website with some strength exercises tailored for runners. http://www.runnersworld.com/home/0,1300,2-61-0-201-3-3,00.html Runner or not, exercise #4 is a GREAT no-impact, no kneejoint-stress way of getting quads toned--and most importantly, STRONG. I tried it and really liked that I was feeling some nice burn without having to compromise my knees. The instructions recommend 50 reps, but for now, I'm starting off at 25 reps at a time with no weights. I'm thinking that this will help get the mess currently doing a crappola job of keeping my knees together in check, y'know. And then I can run, run like the wind! (Remember that 80s song? Don't act like you don't now!) ;) Tally ho for now, have a lovely week-end! |

You answered many of the things that I have been so curious about (especially about the hair thing). As an African-American woman in Knoxville TN, I have only seen one other sista who has had the procedure and she wasn't friendly or open. You are a beautiful young lady and I don't know you but feel tremendous pride in your ability to face things that so many of us are ashamed to deal with. When I read your bio it was so similar to my own experiences that it was just down right strange, how nice to see that there is a possibility of a happy ending for me (or should I say new beginning). I am a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the first thing that I want to do with my health new body is step! When I do I will post those pictures on my own webpage. | Comments: | Stephani this guy could just be persistent but still he sounds creepy. With all that goes on today you can never be too cautious. Nip this in the bud quick. Even if he's not dangerous, you're gonna start dreading your workouts because of his unwarranted attention. I would talk to someone at the gym and let them know to intervene whenever the old dude comes around you. That's if changing your workout times doesn't help. It would be great if you had a workout buddy because guys feel too confident about approaching women that are alone. I have a feelin you're gonna start cussin dude out and things may get ugly if you don't nip it in the bud. Take care girl and don't let anything or anyone steal your joy or workout! |

| Comments: | Here Here Steph for your 02/18/03 entry. I am totally feeling you on the whole Lane Bryant thing. My only beef with them is I can't shop there because I'm a size 32. Silhouettes is too expensive and I don't think they have enough creativity. Even though I'm fat, I still want to express myself via dress like everyone else. Loveyourpeaches.com really has some nice stuff but it's even more expensive than Silhouettes. It's gonna cost me 800.00 to buy 7 spring outfits. All my friends that shop at regular stores insist that I am paying too much for clothing and want me to try on clothes where they shop. I have been to those stores and refuse to try to stuff in there size 26. However, my friends are in the 20-24 range and can shop at Lane Bryant and even some Rainbow shops for 10 dollar clothes. I can't wait to shop at Lane Bryant. Their clothes are stylish and sassy and I love it. Also, I used to shop at Sizes Unlimited aka The Avenue. However, their size 32 tops are so tight around the breasts and belly. My point is - these stores aren't selling MuMu's or frumpy clothing. Just the opposite, I think they're focusing on the size 20 and below market who consider themselves really a 16 and forgetting about the heavier folk who would love to just be able to fit attractive clothing. This whole issue is why I got a degree in Fashion Merchandising. I haven't utilized it though and that's all related to the fat discrimination. However, I look forward to making changes in the future. Whether I'm a size 10 or 36. Keep up the enlightenment! |

| Comments: | Steph!! Oh my god!! You look amazing!! I haven't emailed in a while, but I wanted to comment on Krispy Kreme incident. You're not alone. It happens. I know, from experience. I had a sugar laden pity party to celebrate V-day. I'm a single girl now, and I'm relating to a lot of what you are saying about body image, etc. Email me soon! You rock! I'm so proud of you! |

| Comments: | Hey Girl,
I really loved reading your site and it is very well put together. I will try to come back often to see if you have new stuff. I have started my journey and as of the 10th of February I have lost 20 pounds. I am very happy and did not have any problems. I had minimal pain too. I am still sore but nothing I can't handle. You keep it up Girl. Ifama |
