| Comments: | I was assigned to the 2nd Mobile Communications Group from November 1972 through September 1974. My AFSC was 21950. My rank was A1C (E-3) when I arrived and Sgt (E-4) when I was reassigned to the States.
I was stationed in AN/TGC-20 and AN/TGC-27 vans near the Sembach runway. When not working there, we were TDY to several local places getting accustomed to putting up and taking down tents during one "Exercise" after another. The 2nd MOB moved from Sembach to Lindsay AS, Wiesbaden, Germany in 1973. This location was much more liveable, and central to public transportation. That was very important until I purchased a car in late 1973. I remember that we were on an Exercise near Istanbul, Turkey in late 1973 when the Israeli-Egyptian war broke out. The USAF kept us there for an additional week, thinking that they might redeploy us to Israel for support. They ultimately flew us back to Germany. A week later, they decided to deploy us to Israel, but were later denied the use of German runways to support the Israeli effort. The 5th MOB from the US flew in troops to Israel to support that effort, because we could not. What was ironic about the above, was that 6 months later, the 2nd MOB was in Cairo and Alexandria, Egypt for the clearing of the Suez Canal. That Exercise title Nimbus Star/Nimbus Moon had a duration from 11 April to 22 June 1974. The 2nd MOB supported Navy Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) divers for the clearing of bombs from the Canal. A 24 man team was deployed to the American Embassy in Cairo, which set up our Vans on the campus, and we lived in local Egyptian hotels. I was in Egypt for about a month, when asthma kicked up, and I was replaced by SGT Joe Scott. The 2nd MOB was commanded at the time by Col Peter K. Densmore. The Deputy Commander was Lt. Col Robert S. Rayfield Some of the guys that I was stationed with were: SMS Robert Pearce TSG Richard Meyer SSG Veril Scott SSG Donald Raco SGT Brian McMillen SGT James Muserallo SGT Joesph Scott |

| Comments: | OK - I wasn't a mobster, but I remember having a couple of friends who were, there at Lindsay Air Station in beautiful downtown Wiesbaden. Just up the street from USAF Hospital Wiesbaden and the Amelia Earhardt hotel. Unfortunately, I don't remember their names now. I don't know why, since I remember so much other stuff
I stumbled upon this site after doing a search on AN/TSC-60. I was in Ground Radio, and went to my second duty assignment at Wiesbaden Air Base in January 1974, in the 601st Tactical Control Squadron. We were located between the runway and the autobahn - I never had any kind of sense of direction the whole time I was in Germany, probably because it was cloudy, dark and gloomy when I got there, and I didn't see the sun until about April, when it was too late to give me a sense of direction! In September '74, I was transferred to the 601st Tactical Air Control Center (maintenance) Squadron, which had just been moved up (well, sort of) from Sembach. And our worksite was Mainz-Kastel, just behind that little housing area. It was also way too easy to get over to the audio/photo/gun clubs! Some of those deployments we had were unforgettable. From Flaming Lance (Sardinia) to the Reforgers, to Oksbol (Denmark) as well as other smaller ones, they left an indelible mark on me. I remember breaking my right middle finger when I was on top of the Rubber Ducky and it sort of snapped - that was fun when saluting with my middle finger taped in gaudy white! And, I remember returning from one deployment by air, on a C-130 during a severe thunderstorm, we actually bounced on first contact when landing - now THAT was scary, when the shelters in the plane shifted right in front of us in the web seats! As the Army was starting to take over WAB, and the 601st TACC Sq. was moving back to Sembach, I left Germany and the Air Force on terminal leave at the end of November '75. I guess I miss it some. |

Every time I see an episode of MASH on TV, it reminds me of life in the 2nd MOB: living in tents and chasing nurses. I joined the 2nd Mob directly out of Comm-Electronics Officer Maintenance school at Keesler in Nov '65 as a 2nd Lt (90 day wonder), along with Ed Stull, both sent to Dreux AB France, while Palmer Rowe went to Toul. My first deployment was to set up the Mercury spacecraft Rescue Control Center at San Pablo (Seville) Spain in Dec 65. Next I was first on the scene at Camp Wilson H-bomb B-52 crash at Palomares, Spain in Jan 66, with Sgt Markledick Lykens, with KWM-2A and a generator; waiting for a TRC-96 radio van to arrive from Madrid by road. Moved the RCC to Moron, Spain in June 66 for Gemini flights. When DeGaulle kicked us out of France in Nov 66, I spoke Spanish, so went to det in Sembach, while Ed Stull spoke German, so he went to Moron, Spain. I then got to rotate a week every six weeks between fixed long-haul radio stations at Croughton, England, San Pablo (Seville) Spain, Adan, Turkey and (until June 67) Wheelus, Tripoli, Libya - as communications co-ordinator while Redwood or Transcom were deployed in the field for training. During my tour I touched down in 27 countries: North: Norway, South Africa, East:Peshawar, Pakistan and West: Ascension Island. I liked Seville, Spain best for the Spring Feria, after Easter; and Wheelus, Tripoli, Libya, for the beach in the winter. My last trip involved shutting down a TRC-96 in Jordan during the June 67 6-day war. In July 67 I was promoted to Captain, moved to HQ at Sembach as Plans & Programs Officer, which restricted my travel due to security knowledge, and left the Mob and the Air Force in Nov 68. I stayed in Germany to manage the Bitburg AB Audio and Photo Clubs, while completing the USC (Univ of Southern Cal) Aerospace Masters Program at Ramstein, with a now-famous classmate, then Capt Richard Myers, who retired last year as a 5-star general, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. |

I won't forget when I completed radar training at Keesler AFB and finally received my orders. I had filled out my 'dream sheet' for some local bases in PA, and got excited when I got my orders. BUT, I was being sent to a 2nd Mobile Comm Gp somewhere in France called Toul Rosieres AB. I went all around Keesler and asked what the 2nd Mobile was, and no one knew. Everyone else in my training class got orders to a legitimate AFB but I felt like a 'bastard' child getting sent to some crazy outfit. But after I signed in at the 2nd Mob orderly room things started to come together and I felt that I was pretty lucky to be in an organization with guys like you. The 2nd Mob made a gypsy out of me. |

| Comments: | This is my second comment with a new E-mail address. I was in the Mob in 63-64 At Toul, what was it?APO 89 can't remember. I made all of the trips like so many others, favorites were India, Saudi, Spain (Hotel Compostela, second floor), and supreme favorite was Shoesterberg in Holland for two months(hotel Hensch) I drove my Healy up there which made it my favorite trip, drove all over Holland with a Dutch Girl named Mika from Den Dolder where the hotel was located, I think there were four of us there. One of you tried to teach me how to play the guiter, Thanks for the effort wish I had learned more from you, would be nice to play now. I have been retired for ten years Nov. '96. Todays date is Dec. '06. The Mob was absolutely the best duty a guy could get, I would do it all over again. I was in Ground Power(power supply for the Comm. vans). Spent a few days in the Himalayans on the India trip , went up there with a radio tech. We slept in a tent in a hole, the Chinese were shooting at us from the higher elevations, I didn't know the little things hitting the sand were bullets until an Indian Officer told me what was going on. Could hardly breath up there, had to sleep with Oxygen. Neat trip.I live in North Florida now, I'm 65, three kids, one grandchild. How about you????? Good to read the notes, brings back good memories. Thanks Mike Belcher |

3rd MOB: Tinker AFB, TPN-19 OJT – 1984 We had a bunch of really sharp guys in the shop. It was my pleasure to work with some of America’s finest. Too bad our RADAR was such a piece of junk. The opinion was that the system was ahead of it’s time, but I’m sure that the PAR computer was based on the NEC PDP-1 predating the system by a decade! I have to admit though, the antenna designs were top-notch. After the Air force I went on to work on Aerostat at Cape Canaveral, finish college, and work in the antenna group at EMS Technologies in Georgia. The experience I gained with the TPN-19 phased array system and the myriad of test equipment it required was invaluable. |

I just sent Reddish an email. I acutally just started surfing for the 2dn MOB and stumbled over the page. Thanks for the short trip down memory lane. I got out of the Air Force after completing my BA and attended U. Texas for graduate courses. Just retired from medical sales career with over 35 years. If anybody remembers me, please send me an email. |

| Comments: | I was at Toul Rosiers Air Force Base in France with 2nd MOB 1961 to 1964. These were some of the best years of my life. I was a truck mechanic working for Sgt. Dunn. I met an Army sergeant's daughter from Toul and nearly married her. She was one of the finest women I ever met, to this day, so my stay in France was very full and active. I do not remember most of the 2nd MOB people. written 8/31/06 |

| Comments: | Was with 2MOB at Toul from 1965-1966 until we were asked to leave. Was transferred to Sembach where I stayed from 1966-1968. Worked at the Training office with the unbelieveable John Dalton. Had a wonderful time. If anyone remembers me do me a favor and E-mail me. |

| Comments: | 1972 - 1976 at Lindsey. Ground Radio, but mostly I made movies, traveled, and had some of the most wonderful times of my life. I've been back to Wiesbaden several times, even walked around Lindsey AS while it was being rebuilt for civilian use. What memories! I wish there would be a reunion for folks from this era.

| Comments: | Hello all ! I was in the 2nd MOB Combined Radio Shop at Patrick AFB from when the MOB first moved there in 1975 until I PCSed to Guam in 1978. What great memories while I was a mobster! Deployed on several exercises (Brave Shield, etc.) at locations from Bergstrom AFB to Amboy, Calif (Mohave Desert). I worked primarily on KWM-2A HF transcievers, some on the AN/TSC-60 van, and the MRC-107/8 comm jeep. Looking for Chris Blunk, Gil Piel, Jay Hicks, Doug Starry, Ralph Heavlin, Carl Hatton, MSgt Salvatore, and any others who might remember me from that period. I retired from the AF after 25 yrs as a SMSgt.
Warmest wishes to everyone!! |
