Had a crush on Bruce Waring -Hermione had to caution me! Was skivvy to Pikkie, and still got sore knees from Hostel manager Mr Johnson's reprimands, as I was a delinquent kid. Left after "M"level in '76.Studied in SA; been living in Richards Bay since 1983. Married to Rod (ex-Umtali) and have a daughter of 22 and son of 20 - both still studying at UCT. Memories of THS are quite hazy but seeing the photos brings floods back! I had a brother, Richard, in Cranwell, a year ahead of me - now living outside Pietermaritzburg. |

| Comments: | Hullo everyone! Well, it seems that Gauteng won the contest to host the next reunion and our very own Sepp Blatter (Ray Hewitt) handed me the envelope yesterday. Here’s what I have arranged so far……the Department of Transport is widening all the highways around Joburg and Pretoria – it’s a bit of a mess right now but will hopefully be completed by the time you all get here next year. They’ve also come up with a Bus Rapid Transport system which should make our lives easier and, of course, getting to and from the airport will be a breeze on the fancy new train I’ve ordered. (With hindsight, the stadiums will probably be too big - I hope they can use them for something else.) Friday 24 September 2010 is a public holiday here in SA so that weekend would be quite a good choice – an extra day for travelling, the weather should have perked up a bit and, most importantly, all the rest of the Vaalies will be at the coast so we can have the province to ourselves. (Also, it gives us a whole year to come up with a plan!) I am going to rope in some co-organisers and we’ll get the ball rolling on this side but, in the meantime, we need to confirm a date in September and then get an indication of how many people will attend. Every single one of us knows how to contact a fellow Thornhillian who is not on Facebook so we need to spread the word – please ask him/her/them to contact me and I will compile another mailshot list so they don’t get left out. I was at Thornhill from 1974 till 1978 and must admit,they where the best years and held the most {good} memories.I went to the Grey's Scouts in 1979 and served until the end of the war. In May 1980 i married Anthea Carey {Chaplin}and we moved to SA n 1982.We have two children and a grandson. Our Son, Blaine lives at Haartebeespoort Dam and is 28 yrs old,our Daughter,Leigh lives in Witbank and is 26 yrs old.Leigh is married to Jan and have Alex {9 months} who is the light of my life..Being a Grandpa's not that bad ha ha.We live in Klerksdorp where i work as a Training Officer on the Mines,after semi-retiring in 2006 after 27 years in the Mines Rescue Brigade and Shift Supervisor. Anthea works in the Time Office on the Mine. Would be great to hear from anyone that might remember me from School. |

No comparison. Remember legends like Bruce Waring, the Peebles Brothers, Cheese Cloete, Ben Benade, Andries Lamprecht, Mark Templemore Walters, Sheldon Dudley, and all my school friends like Iain Chamberlain, John Moore, Mark Marais, the Du Bernards, BJ Coetzee, Tod Burns, Grant Nealon, the Du Plessis brothers, Gary Parkin, the Drews, the Monges, the Perrymores. I honor the great teachers like the Bob Johnstons, Tom Johnstone, Pete Newling, Mrs Chamberlain, The Harts (I still hate French - and only like them when they beat our SA rugby competitors), John Dykstra, Kevin Smith (what happened to him?), etc.. And the hostels, believe it or not second to home - who never stole food from the teachers lounge (some of you I never punished??)The Deputy HeadBoy 80/81 and Head of Cranwell 80/81. I found a very old friend Fiona Frey, which is just amazing.I was at Thornhill 74 to 79, then moved to Bulawayo to do my nursing training, played hockey for Matabeleland in 80, wanted to stand for the Zim team but the hospital matrons would not let me have weekends off for hockey & the Zim ladies team came back with a gold medal, what a miss hey! Moved to SA in 85 and have been in Jhb since 90. Drew brothers are a bit scattered, Gary in Dubai, Basil in Perth, Kev & Rod here in Jhb. | Comments: | Still here in Zimbabwe...... reading through the guest book and noticed that i had not signed in?! I live in Harare, where i run my business from. Married (21 years now) to Robyn, kids, Justin (21) and Lauren (18) studying in Pretoria and Cape Town respectively.Yes, Zim keeps the stress levels at really good levels, but, other wise we are all well. Play lots of golf and squash and see people like Colin Fitch, Clive Melton, Vince Lewis, Flo Manning, Ray Hewwit, Jef Millard (and others who i can't think of right now) occasionally. Also keep in touch with those naughty buggers John and Roy Hurrell... they went to G Fowl, but, lived near THS in those days. I was at THS 73-79, only went to school for the sport and the mates!! never did any work. Spoke to Leigh Cranswick on the weekend, apparently my son was visiting her daughter (in pretoria)!! Mr Johnson, do you remember me? Geography was never my strong point but I still enjoyed your lessons. By the way, I was at Thornhill from 1979 (the first black girl) up to 1984 (the first black head girl: the first black head boy being Ronnie Maumbe). Then my surname was just Samkange. He is really a good man who has been throught a lot of curved balls that life has thrown at him and despite of all this I can honestly say that it has been a real privilage to have renewed our school friendship. We also met with Karen Byrne. She is as crazy and wonderfull as always. I have also managed to chat with Fanie Klopper who is living in Durban. I was a border from from Shabani from 1977 to 1981 and really enjoyed my time at Halton House. many fond memories of hostel life under Dot Cairns, then Jenny Hooper and Tom Johnson. left for SA in 1983 and though have been back to Zim (Heather le Marquand is still in Harare) I have never returned to either Shabani or Thornhill or Gweru. regards Gail |

| Comments: | I was a Thornhill student in 1972-73, and while I hated the first 2 days there, Thornhill proved to be the best 2 years of my school life. Lots of fun and lots of mischief. Played first team rugby both years with Rob Wermuth and gang and was prefect in '73. I would love to hear from any of the mates from that time so that we can catch up. I finally left Zim in May 2007 and am trying to settle in S.A. Looking at the pictures page on this site I notice that the group rugby picture shows me as " B. Gooden" standing between Collect and Peebles. We never did have a chap named Gooden on the team so would appreciate it if this could be fixed. |

Wings disco blaring while we built the whole lot. Even today when I hear Bostan, Journey, Foriegner, Lionel Ritchie etc it's flash back time to fun and innosence.Shaping on C block after sports practices and walking, ever so slowly, your Bird back to Halton House. Those good byes could take up to forty minutes. The bell in the hostel would go and we'd still have so much to say. The bus trips to Fort Vic, Jameson etc.The Les Sharpe festivals. Who can forget the Miss Thornhill competions.Man we had good looking gals! Both my Son and Daughter are in High school now. A lot of things have not changed That's my worry. For my boy - I envy him. Wish I could go back and do it all again. I encourage him to give it horns-"go big or go home.” For my girl-sleepless nights to come for me.I know what the guys are upto and what’s important to them.
