I came down from Bancroft (Chililabombwe to the natives,in Zambia), with my brother Joss (keen rugby player - renowned for vicious low tackling), and my Dad - Charles Leaman taught at Thornhill too. I attended Thornhill High for a couple of years and left in 1969 to start work in first job at the Standard Chartered Bank Gwelo. Hadn't the first idea of difference between debit and a credit! | Comments: | I am proud of all I learnt and got from this fountain of education and Fun.My memory about Thornhill High School automatically dials names like my late dear friend Ronnie Maumbe, Cyril Zhungu,Dr. Mike, Owen Seda, VaZirereza, Alfred Dube, Fisher, Mangabhai, Hazrine Hapazari, Bob Machaya, Florence Spider Samukanga, Tony Lubbey, Delina, Pat Forder, Regis, Manatsa, Frank, Vumani, Gertrude Guti, Natsai, Kundai, Gladys, Mapepa Manikai, Joseph Chizororo, Angela and Edwin Sanyanga, Anthony Mhuka, Moojahidin, Taft, Ian. The following were special to me in Cranwell House: Mr Johnson, Mr Chikwira,Mr John Winter and Mrs Manuel, Mudhara William. These guys made my life easy during my 2 years in Cranwell House Mageza, Nigel Greene, Archiford Banda, and Esmond Rose(they knew all...) Those were the days - "Valentine Social" Lots of good memories and fortunately these good times live in our minds and all we can do is to "share and spread the good word about OUR THORNHILL HIGH SCHOOL". Its a different place now but the green lawn of the mighty Rugby Field LIVES On. The emotion charged rugby games versus Chaplin, that was the best and the worst as we lost most of the time. The gruesome Monday assembly after the loss was worse than a funeral, and all I can remember is Mr John Drinkwater re-opening the soar wound by announcing the bad news as if we did not witness the shameful defeat. I dont fault Mr Drinks, he had a job to do and he did it so WELL. The lessons of pioneering multi racial education at Thornhill created a solid base for tolerance and mutual co-existance to us as citizens of the world. Thanks. (1983 and 1984) |

I did enjoy the plays we did, and especially going to dances at Guinea Fowl....I loved dancing and was invited to the dances by the boys who also lived in Shabani. I still enjoy dancing and danced in the Royal Albert Hall a few years ago, modern jazz and an african dance.....Returned to live in S.A. Durban, then come overseas end 60's, returned to S.A. in 80's then returned to London end 90's and here I am. I would love to hear from any school mates. Best wishes to you all xx |

| Comments: | Hi guys oh was glued to the screen gooood times hey - good school, from year to year - remember the variety shows we called them in the 80s Mrs Coventry straight posture and chin up making sure your uniform was not above the knee, and no long hair left loose - the sewing lessons were always long with her.... ah she did keep standard, Mrs Chamberline sweet lady, and very good history lectures esp the scramble for africa, Mr Gotcha was a good headmaster, we had him just after Mr Drinkwater had left. John and I have been married for 40 years, have two lovely children, Carol 37 married to Guy Emberton with two delightful boys of 9 & 7. Our son, Graeme is married to Inge with their first one due in 3 weeks.We live an hour away from both our children - it's great. We have been living in Ballito, North Coast, KZN for 34 years - a lovely part of the world. I have worked at the Breakers Resort in Umhlanga Rocks for the past 20 years as Financial Manager,and happy to say love every day of it!! | Comments: | Hello - THS 1962-1966. I am a newcomer to the Thorny Issue, and it has been good to see that so many old boys and girls are still around, but sad to hear of those who have passed away. After studying and travelling I eventually started farming with my folks on the farm near Gwelo in 1975. I married Helen from Ireland in 1977, and we have been here ever since. The land grab left us with a third of our farm in 2001, and have so far managed to resist further loss of land, but things have got worse this year.My brothers Olly and John and my sister Christine and some of our kids are also still around Gweru.I still keep in contact with John and Marileine (Bromley) Fox and see Ashley Peters now and again.There are still a few other old Thornhillians in the area - Rodney Tapson for one. | Comments: | Left Thornhill in 86 , had some good years and some bad years at the old thornhill but thats part of growing up, dont know if anyone remembers Mr Manyika the mad man who always made science a great laugh, but not if it was you who was getting his boot. Remember playing first team rugby and being the only eauropean in the team which made me a target for the the other schools great time's, they used to call us the nearly all blacks team. I am married to Elizabeth nee Cronje who is an old Evelyn Girls High School lass and have just had our 39th anniversary on the 6th of Feb. Done many things in my past and am currently the Pastor off the Methodist Church in the area we live, Duiwelskloof in South Africa. My brother Hannes, an ex Northlea boy are running the Zimbabwe Pensioners Supporters Fund serving the pensioners in old age homes in Zim. We are serving almost 2000 people in 28 homes throughout the country as well as some in their own homes in the towns and cities. We need your help. I know old Thornhillians came to the party last year, well done chaps, but we need more of the same. Please contact me to organize presentations in your areas.
