| Comments about Reproductions...: | Hi and thank you for your research on Croesus glass. I have found it to be very helpful. I am sorry to say that I just purchased a table set at auction that appears to be a reproduction based on your side-by-side comparison. I was a little suspicious when I was seeing these all over the web. I wondered how so many 100 years old had survived. These are being sold as the real deal. I have the cream, sugar and spooner in the green gilted.
I also have a pink milk glass butter lid that I haven't seen mentioned. I am sure it is a reproduction but I wonder who made it? Keep up the good work. Brenda |

| Comments about Reproductions...: | How to ID colored glass could be a problem. Those with enough experience to go by color pattern and etc. are very few and far between. I will stand on the black light test.If it is clear glass. People have tried to sell me sun purple. If it does not glow green or lime color it isn't the real deal. No Manganese in it. I don't care what you do to manganese laden glass it will glow green under a black light. I have found most people don't know what there looking for and alot of the time use a black light with the wrong NM'S |

Being the novice ( at the comupter ) that I am, I don't know if my comment about the opaque pink butter dish got to where ever it was suppose to be the first time, because I didn't know what sign the book meant, not sure I do yet. The first time I saw one of these I knew it was new as it is thicker than the old, Heacock's test of the flat edge of the lid proved to be valid, it was heavier than the old, the pattern lacked the detail of the old, the surface was almost rough, the gold was poorly applied, if there at all. This was probably at least 15 years ago. Have seen only a couple, should not fool anyone who has seen much glass. Love this new found site, having much fun! Thank you! I'll push sign the book and see what happens |

| Comments about Reproductions...: | I received four pieces of Royal Purple gilded croesus from my mother. The set includes a butter dish with cover, sugar bowl with cover, a creamer and one other piece not sure on the piece. All of these pieces were wedding gifts for my grandparents and they were married in the late 19th century and are original. I enjoyed your website. |

| Comments about Reproductions...: | I find that the best defense against reproductions is self
education, reading a lot!Going to see glass in person, speaking to knowledgeable persons, using a blacklight on old and new glass, esp to compare the blacklight reaction of known contemporary glass versus known old glass, there are many, many differences and only exposure will give one an "eye" for,the often obvious, but sometimes subtle ones. After putting in a lot of time reading and looking,I've developed an eye for whats real, and can usually tell even from decent photos online, the rule being,"if in doubt don't buy". For the blacklight, there is no mistaking the lime-green aura that comes off of old pieces, strong when U salts were added delibertly, feint when added with cullet. Altho not always present, depending on the makers formula, when that is present,in addition to the right feel, the right pattern & the known facts I fell secure I'm looking at old glass with all its charms and quirks of manufacture(new glass is so boring in its bland "perfection"-manufacture-wise!) |

| Comments about Reproductions...: | I have 2 green Croecus butter dishes that look almost
identical. One has ugly green glow under black light like my Empress the other does not. I figure the one that is not ugly yellowish green is a repro. I hope the other is authentic, though I wouldn't want to bet on it. |

that I believe is a repro but it is pink and more like milkglass. Do you have any information about this. |

| Comments about Reproductions...: | Hi,
I just got back from a fleamarket where I purchased a vaseline butterdish in the croseus pattern with gold detail also. I am sure it is a repro too, but haven't seen any of the new ones with gold paint(the paint is also worn in places) and it seems to be a much lighter color, more of a light yellow/green than yellow. Anyone else have any clues? |

| Comments about Reproductions...: | I'm pretty sure I have a repro Croesus butter dish, and I
sure thought it was in vaseline. It glows just like my Northwood vaseline, Klondyle card holder, and Northwood trough, both being vaseline. I can't tell the difference among the three pieces. The only problem is I've had my butter dish since the early 80's so I know it's not one being reproduce by Rosso 1998. Can you give me any light as to who made this butter dish? I've compared it to your authentic/repro and its handle at the top looks like a repro. I will say this when I first got the piece, I didn't think it was vaseline. It is yellow green but has more green than yellow in it so I've had my doubts that it is vaseline. When I recently purchased a black light, I found out that it glowed just like the other pieces of vaseline that I have. So can you be of help? I sure would appreciate knowing. Thanks. |

| Comments about Reproductions...: | Just wanted to add a few words regarding the reproduction
toothpick holders in the Croesus pattern. I like to have information that will help me distinguish between new and old when I find myself at a show or shop and don't have access to a known example. For that reason, with Croesus, I think the most helpful distinction between the old and new is the two "Cs" (on the right side of the pattern). On the old, they are nearly the same size. On the new, one is considerably smaller than the other. Also, please be aware that the repro toothpick holder is sometimes pinched in near the top just like the old one. Not all of the repros have straight sides. Repros have been made in all colors, includins some slags. The earlier repros were shaped just like the originals and were made in amethyst and green - and even had worn gold!! The others, I believe, came later -- after the public caught on to the fact that the pattern was being reproduced. |

| Comments about Reproductions...: | There is a new reproduction of the Croesus butter dish in
vaseline (no gold) that has been out since mid 1998. EBay has been flooded with them. Said to be from Rosso with 240-260 made. Croesus was never made in vaseline...also look at finials to recognize repros. Discussion of what to look for in the finials is in the Croesus Reproductions section of the "Collections" page of this website. |
