The rumor was that he got on a train and was never seen again, we have searched through social security records and there aren't any records, he is most likely deceased but we still would like to find out about his life after he went missing. He married Nancy Slaven/Slavin in Vigo county, Indiana Mar 29th 1860. I've found him in the 1880 - 1920 Lost Creek township, Vigo county, Indiana census (he died in 1924). He also married Kate E (unknown) ca 1884 in Vigo county, Indiana.

THOMAS HARTLEY. Seeme that I have hit a dead end. My grandfather (john Thomas Hartley) was born 12 Aug 1870 supposedly in or near Terre Haute, IN. 2nd marrage was to Ella Ambert Mickey and they had 6 children that lived. He died in 1936 in Jefferson Co., IN. My g-grandfather (John Thomas Hartley) was supposedly born in 1841 in MA. Married a Mary Coppock from either the Philadelphia area or from around Terre Haute, IN. Moved to Indiana 1860-1865 . And died in 1872 near Terre Haute, IN. My gg-grandfather (John Thomas Hartley) was supposedly born in England in 1811, immigrated to America as a young man, possibly to NC before going to MA. My father Frank was born in 1909 and is still alive age 93. I have boxes of old serpia photographs all unidentified!!!! My father is blind and can't help. He is the last surviver of 13 children. I don't even which are are my gradparents on the photographs. I am not in contact with any family members other than my own line. Sad isn't it? | Comments: | George HARTLEY was my gg-grandfather. His wife was called Elizabeth, and they had (at least) five children: George Jr, Harry, Jack, Ciss, and William. Ciss married someone called Arthur.
William was my g-grandfather. He was chauffeur to the FORD family in Adel, Leeds, where he met his wife Eva CHAPMAN, also in service. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in WW1 and died of a war injury in Feb 1918 or 1919, when his only son William Jr was 6. Eva's parents were Thomas CHAPMAN and Emma; she had a brother Walter CHAPMAN and a sister Elsie who married a Mr THORNTON of Morecambe Bay. I have no dates on *any* of this other than the one given above, which makes George Sr and Elizabeth hard to trace as there were scores of Hartleys in Leeds at about that time. And I don't even have George confirmed as being from Leeds. Any offers? |

say that my grandfather was William Supten Hartley, married my grandmother, Nallie Champion of Rutherford County, NC. My grandfather was a surveyor for the railroad. It is my understanding that either his father or grandfather married a Cherokee Indian and was promptly written out of the family. I would love to know this family history. My grandfather died in 1931 of food poisoning. My father passed away sixteen years ago. I never thought to ask him about our family history. I do believe that my grandfather was and only child and this line of Hartley's originated in New Jersey. There are four children to William S. Hartley, Jr. One being myself, a sister Stephanie and two brothers, Terry Michael and William Supten, III. |

I appear to be related to Horatio's son Washington and the unknown author of the document is related to a daughter Eliza (who married John Hoult and is the authors grandmother). On the back of the document the author gives Luilla's name as someone who has the will of Horatio's father Joseph (b.1742). I do know this: He was a private in the 1st Reg Ohio Militia 1812-1816, he fought in the Battle of Detroit, and was in Hull's surrender at Detroit. It is said that he came here from Ireland. time of the birth of her son, Albert Potterton Hartley, October 5, 1864 at Bedford Place, Yorkshire. She gave what I believe to be a false address on the birth registration but it was a Bradford address. My GGrandfather Albert & family came to Canada from Bradford so I am assuming that he may have been raised there. He was a master butcher in Bradford. Ann may have married after his birth - I have a lead that he may have had a sister named MARTHA (last name unknown) who married a JOE MOORE. Martha & Joe Moore raised Albert's daughter Ivy from 1903 til about 1915 when Albert sent for her to come to Canada. I also asssume they lived in the Bradford area. He married Martha SILVESTER but was tragically killed in WW1 in Somme, France. Other children were Sarah Jane b. 1873, James Henry b. 1875, Samuel b. 1880, Arthur b. about 1881 and Matilda b. 1877. Matilda married Arthur LONGDEN and emigrated to Toronto in Canada. Matilda and Arthur were both drowned on the Lucitania when returning to England in 1915. The above family lived at Cowlishaws Buildings in Manchester, recorded in the 1881 census. VA (now WV) until 1794 when they moved to Nicholas Co. KY, near the town of Carlisle. Their ch: John, Mordica, Mary (married Benjamin F. Blackburn in Nicholas Co. in 1819) Phoebe, William, Margret, Hannah, Daniel, & James. The last four children were born in Nicholas Co. KY; the others were born in Berkeley Co. VA. Benjamin & Mary Blackburn moved to Monroe Co. IN in ca. 1835 and were there through 1850, then in Brown Co. IN in 1860. No further trace of them has been found. Does anyone have the book, "A History of Thomas Hartley of Virgina; A Soldier of the Revolutionary War, and His Descendants" by Joseph C. Hartley, grandson of Thomas, pub. by T. M. | Comments: | I am desparately trying to continue my family research but
have hit a brick wall. My Great Grandfather was Albert Potterton Hartley. He was born October 5, 1864 at 5 Bedford Place, Harrogate. His Mother was Ann Hartley and gave her address as Drake Street, Bradford. There was no father listed - she was probably unmarried. I have not been able to find any trace of her and that is where my search has ended. Albert Potterton Hartley, later(?) lived in Bradford, was a master butcher, married Annie Elizabeth Waddington, 23 February 1896 and had three children - Harry, Wilfred and Ivy. After Annie’s death in 1903, the family emigrated to Canada. Also, sometime between Harry & Wilfred’s births, Albert changed his name to William Albert Hartley. It has been suggested that Potterton may have been his father’s family name. If any Hartley Reasearchers have any info regarding the above family and can pin-point the mysterious Ann Hartley for me, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. |
