His great grandfather (William Hartley) according to family stories came owned a couple of drygoods shops in Birmingham, England, was married to Elizabeth, had a daughter, also Elizabeth, and came to Dubuque, Iowa in 1861, where a son John William Hartley (known as Will), was born. Will married Sarah Payne, and had two surviving sons, John Wiley Hartley (b 1898) and Talbot Lewis Hartley (1909). Talbot married Anna Maria Kahlke in 1938, and had one son, John Talbot Hartley (my husband) in 1953. We have one son, Jordan Ross Hartley (b 1988).
Will, my husband's grandfather, was injured in a mining accident and my husband's father never really knew him. As a result, my husband only has vague information passed on by his grandmother, father, and uncle, late in their lives, when their memories were no longer very sharp. He would really like to find out more about his Hartley ancestors in England. |

She married, apparently below her social status, a John Smith in 1797 (in Manchester) and her first child was Hartley Smith (!) about whom I have a lot of information. He spent 20 years in the British army, serving 12 years on Corfu and a couple of years in Ireland before returning to Colne where he lived the rest of his life with his wife and 11 children. |

The information here is very special. Hartley isn't that common. My parents are Norman (1918-) and Jane Hartley, formerly of Closter, NJ and now living in Stroudburg, PA. My brother is James Laurence Hartley (1954-), now living in New Hampshire. I live in San Antonio TX where I am a professor of Spanish Literature and Digital Video at the University of Texas at San Antonio. (b. 1950) My father's parents were Jane Pearson (1889-1981), of Dalton-in-Furness, England and Edgar Hartley, of Birmingham (we think), England. She was an English chambermaid in New York and he was a baker when they met there. He disappeared in 1933. We are wondering if there is a connection with the Edgar Hartley who founded the camp in High Point, North Carolina, later called Camp Cheerio. My Grandfather Clarke Hartley I believe was born in Leeds, emigrated with his mother, father and two brothers in 1912 on the SS. Manitoba from Liverpool (he was 16 at the time). They bought a land parcel in the area of Swift Current Saskatchewan (Canada). Clarke Hartley went overseas to war and returned to Honley, England where he met and married my Grandmother Marion Broadbent, and they had one son Morris Hartley. They left England to return to the homestead in Saskatchewan, where my mother Hazel Hartley ws born (although this part is sketchy - not actually sure of her birthplace). My grandfather and grandmother didn't last long in the prairies - and soon left to live in Thunder Bay, Ontario (Canada). I'm wondering what remaining relatives I may have in Saskatchewan and in England.

trying to trace my family history. My Mom Hazel Jannette Hartley Robinson was born in 1920 to Raymond and Maybelle Baxley Hartley of Jacksonville, Fl. She had an older brother, Kenneth Lorraine and a baby sister, Marie. I have not had contact with the family since late 1950's. Uncle Kenneth had a daughter, Lorraine Hartley who married and moved to Stuart, Florida. My mom married my dad, Earl Robinson of Perry, Florida in 1942. He was the only child of Ealey Sampson Robinson b. 1898 Folkston, GA and Ella Lee O'Steen b. 1898 in Folkston, GA. If any of you Hartleys out there know any Jacksonville/Mandarin Hartleys, I'd love to hear from you. I'm assuming our Hartley branch is from Ireland. My mom's family had a trait which was, one child in each family, usually a daughter, had red hair, while the rest of the family was dark haired and olive skinned. Nice talking to you. Dad was Jobe M. Hartley son of Benjiman Maxwell Hartley 1885-1966 who lived in Morgantown,WV but moved here, maybe from the Carolina's in the 1920's. He Married Ema Willma Price. The coat of arms that I found for the family used a 10 point stag as it's center piece and a shield close to the one one the homepage. I had a painting of this but it was distroyed in a house fire. ( tragic) I had hoped to give it to my future grand kids. All e-mail regarding family history welcome. And hey to the other two Steve's in the guest book. |

I am the 7X grandson of John Hartley who we think lived in Belmont County, Ohio sometime around the 1780's. It is said that he fought with "Mad Anthony Wayne". His son, Samuel and Samuel's son (Samuel VB Hartley) who married Abigail are layed to rest in Bethel Cementary, Buffalo, West Virginia along with my father and Grandfather. For T. Hartley, Thomas Hartley is also there as well along with some of the Raynes family.

in Livesay, Lancashire, England to either Christopher Hartley and Peggy or William Hartley and Mary. He joined the British Army when he was seventeen and married Maria Bates in the West Indies as he was stationed there. He ended up in Grenville, Argenteuil, Quebec, Canada in the 1800s after spending some time as Lockmaster for the Rideau Canal near Ottawa, Ontario. The family mostly lives in Quebec Province except for me. I would love to know which parents in the census were his. |
