Sarge crossed the line from dog to human long ago. What impessed me most about Sarge is he never bit me. Unlike that Tazmanian Devil Paul owned before Sarge. Sarge never let me come in the house without a special greeting, i.e., knocking me down and slobering on me. Sarge had a specail sense of humor too. One day after Sarge graduated from his police academy, I stopped by the Haberman's house and Sarge thought it would be fun if he layed down in the street and made believe he was leveled by a car. Sarge told me to call Paul on his HT because he was working. When Paul pulled up, Sarge thought I should stand over him with a sad look on my face. When Paul drove up, he nearly had a coronary. Well...After Paul realized this was a prank, he chased me halfway to Deal using language no man should use while in uniform. When I turned to Sarge to explain, he put on that "dog" act like he couldn't talk. Sarge loved his pals Doug, Scott and Amanda too. You couldn't get near those kids with out him giving you "the look". Me and Sarge were tight though. Paul swore that he was the only one who Sarge would listen to. WRONG. Contrary to popular belief, Sarge would take McDonald fries from me with a simple hand signal. When Paul and I competed for Sarges attention, Sarge would go to Paul because he knew how sensitive Paul was. He would then apologize to me later when Paul was not around. The best thing about Sarge was that he allowed me to visit Stephanie when Paul was out of the house. I would bring him a milkbone and it would be "Our Little Secret". That was until Sarge began demanding prime rib steaks. He was shrewd. We all lost a good friend when we lost Sarge. He was THE BEST. A perfect match fo one of the FINEST cops I ever worked with.
