Comments: Wow...look at the liitle engine that could! you are alls grown up!(sorta) Complete with a drama filled firing of this Zach fellow. Although I never listened to this guy and his zoo crew, I'm sure they had fun and felt that crossing the line of community standards was cool. Well, eventually those standrads are more important than your creativity...example one Don Imus.."Mop heads" example two.. Opus and Andy on XM with Condi Rice. All in all Z has the opportunity to start over, after all this is just college radio (the incubator of learning radio) But along the way you learn standards and what lines not to cross and what lines are tolerated to cross. (All in the name of ratings and profit in the real world FYI)
How far is too far? Good question. If a contract was signed by Z and that contract was violated then what is done is done. Don't worry Z there are plenty of schools that will take you in...but you can only do your style of radio between 1 am and 5am. Why? casue the FCC says thats when standards are at their lowest casue folkis like 13 olds are sleeping and they won't hear ya! Any how that's just a tad bit of the reality that awaits the promising C/J majors out there...that and a green apron at Starbucks!(JK kids stay in school) But I must admit WSYC managment that the station sounds great and that decisions like this are certinally tough to make. They may not be popular decisions, but they are made for the betterment of the radio station so that others may learn in this incubator of learning! BTW Ambrose good synopsis. I see that you sobered up from your TKE days...:) Peace out for now...C |

Comments: Zack was an asset to the radiostation and know one knows that more than me he would always be punctiual with the show and he is the only one at WSYC that would be willing to wake up at 4:00A.M. in the mourning to do a saturady show. Zack wolud play music that pepole actuly licked. He did a good job sure he may have made a few mistakes but don't we all make mistakes and isn't the idea of college radio to make those mistakes so you can improve yourself. I think kicking Zack off the air is not right, he was dedicated to his show orgainized and even when the chips were down he would lead the way on the show. I think WSYC is Lucky to have dedicated pepole like Zack Zortman and him being kicked off the air is not fair. |

Comments: Zortman, you're a prick. To think you'd stoop this low and recruit your lame ass friends to post bullshit stories of how great your show was is pathetic. You make it seem as though you're the victim but you knew what you were getting yourself into and now you're just a blubbering little bitch because you can't take the consequences. Seriously, you and your "edgy" show were bullshit. You're just as bad as those crybaby emo kids who use the Internet to "vent" their problems. Guess what. No one is listening. But I'm sure you're used to this since it was probably the same with your show. You are worthless and so are your so-called friends who have listened to your childish "pranks" over the radio. Yeah, you sure are professional. Dick. |

Comments: I would like to thank everyone for their support. I have moved on with my life and I don't wish for this situation to escalate. It doesn't look as if it will. I think my biggest concern is that people more than not seem to look at the rules rather than their rights. People often forget that right that gives them the freedom to say what they want-when they want-where they want. True, my show was edgy in style and we did use profanity sometimes. The truth is that the audience of college radio is meant to be college students. In order for college students to listen, the shows from college radio stations need to appeal to the students. I'm not saying that all the shows have to include profanity like mine did but they have to appeal. They have to relate. College students don't want to listen to a bunch of boring material they can read in a book. The people who complained about my show obviously weren't college students but boring, powerhungry adults. I did my best to have the show I always wanted to have and based on the amount of support, people seemed to like it. I can only hope that college radio takes a swing in the right direction sooner or later because right now it is a beurocratic mess that crushes creative thought and imagination. I thank you all for your support and God Bless! |

Comments: It is such a shame when students who are trying to learn the art of communication, the art of broadcasting make a mistake.
For those that took the show off the air, they must understand or realize that art is an expression that should be without limitation. With limitation what is art?
Professors and advisors should know that even though there are some cultural limitations of appropriateness, learning should also be embraced. If you stop someone when they make a mistake, how will they be able to correct themselves or learn from their mistakes? They wont and can't.
By limiting speech, you are limiting freedom. By punishing mistakes, you are punishing learning.
I called into the show once and had a great time. I know everyone else did too.
Tis such a shame. Shame not on their mistake, but shame on your lack of ability to forgive, shame on your lack of ability to teach.
Good luck Zortman! |

Comments: Hey whuts up people. I currently go to Temple University and I have often tuned in to Zack's show and WSYC for the past few years. It would be easy for a cold hearted person with no personality who has authority to dismiss Zack's show and his use of profanity as an outrage. It would be hard for someone who knew what real talent is to dismiss his show. My guess is that the people who kicked Zack off the air can't recognize what real talent is. I have listened to a lot of shows on WSYC over the years and NONE came close to The Double Z Show. I think Zack ran his show the way he wanted to and that is how it should be. He didn't say F*** this and F*** at all. I have listened to at least ten of his shows and he rarely used profanity at all. Double Z=My Reason for listening!!!!!!Go Double Z!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Comments: As a WSYC alum - I thought I would weigh in a bit on the "Zach" controversy. Once upon a time, I was the PM and the GM of WSYC, so I think I can look at this situation objectively.
Good radio, especially in the year 2007, tends to "push the envelope." But, there are lines that should not be crossed. What I can't find out, and perhaps someone could shed some light on, is what was the profanity used - and more important, in what context. In other words, was the use of profanity a "slip", or was the use of profanity intentional by the host? There is a significant difference between the two.
Second, what is the past history with Zach and the WSYC management? Had Zach been put on notice "warned" about behavior on his show. In other words, has Zach been violating the "rules and common sense" proceedures of WSYC in the past.
While we may never know the exact relationship, these are things that WSYC management should have taken into account in setting an appropriate punishment.
A previous poster stated something to the effect that WSYC was at risk for losing their license - my response to that is that is pure hyperbole which is used by faculty advisors to keep the students in line. The FCC is NOT going to pull the license over one incident. What the FCC is looking for is the context of the violation as I discussed above, and what the station did to address it.
My take - unless there were a string of profanities (depending on what word(s) were used), and IF this was the first time the profanity occured - a written warning or suspension is warranted -- not expulsion. This is COLLEGE RADIO, the place to learn about the trade.
However, what I am most upset about is that according to many posters on this board, is that Zach has been dismissed from the C/J department from SU. THIS IS WRONG!
WSYC is a student organization, and as such, should be totally free from the academic department. I remember fighting this battle when I was the GM, because the student association sank $30K into our studios and the C/J department has a POS for a broadcast studio over in Stewart Hall. The C/J department wanted to have the final say in programming. Fortunately we were able to fight them away.
If the C/J department has programming control over WSYC (and if the C/J program dismissed Zach from the program - it appears that they do), then the Student Association should no longer fund WSYC and have WSYC move their studios out of the Ceddia Union Building. |

Comments: Hello my name is Chris Carlton and I am a current student at the University of Pennsylvania. I was a frequent listener of Zach Zortman's show before I found out it was kicked off the air. I have never met Zach but I can tell you that he was magic on the air. Many of my friends here at Penn listened to his show and loved it. I seee reason that he was kicked off the air was for use of profanity. I heard his last show and it did indeed have profanity in it but what a show. My buddies were crying in laughter. It is a shame he is no longer a part of WSYC's station because he was an important part. The people in charge of the station probably could care less about what I say here but I assure them they are blindly disregarding a truly amazing DJ. Best of luck, Zach! |

Comments: I have known Zachary Zortman for over 5 years and he is simply a great guy who always is putting a smile on peooples faces anyway he can. when i hear dhe was going to have a radio show and pursue a career in radio i thought it would be perfect for him. he always has something to say and he always makes you laugh. i know that he should not have used profanity on air and that is more then enough to kick his show off but thats about it. nearly every college student and all kids for that matter uses profanity daily to get there point across. you and me both know that peaople slip and it was a mistake. therfor i believe the only punishment he should face is having the show canceled. i dont see how this could be any reason to kick him out of the department at school. i know how much he loved the show and believe me this is more then enough. why ruin the kids life because of one mistake..... |

Comments: What people dont realize is the trouble that our staff and advisors went thorugh to renew the stations license with the FCC.
What Zach did on the air, put the station in SERIOUS jeopardy of losing its operating license. The incident could still very easily escalate into the station getting in trouble with the FCC.
He signed a contract with the station, agreeing to its and the FCCs regulations regarding language use. And he was well aware of the consequeneces of his actions by doing what he did.
What does everyone expect to happen? Allow a clear violation of Federal Law and get away free without any punishment? Rules are Rules...tough break. Think about your language use next time you have a show.

Comments: I know and lived with Zach. better known amongst his friends as Double Z. its kind of discouraging to hear that his show was canceled. he is and was a great radio host and was thoroughly dedicated to providing a comical but informative show for his listeners. he stood out as a DJ and earned a rep quickly. i strongly suggest reversing the decision. despite what some people disagreed with, its college radio and we're all adults. Zach put a lot into HIS show and expanded on it, more than a lot of people know. as i mentioned before, i lived with Zach when i attended Ship, so I've seen him up, very late at night or early in the morning preparing for a good show. to take the show away from him would be cruel and uncalled for. |

Comments: I'm not a Ship student. I go to Pitt. So I may not have to much say here, but I just wanted to say that Letting Zach Zortman go from the radio station is a mistake. He is a funny guy and he even had me listening to the station regularly. I know there are more people who dont go to SU but listen to this station online, and I can only imagine how many people Zach brings in from Ship. Without zach on the station, I will have no more reason to listen in. |

Comments: There is no question Zack Zortman had the most innovative show on WSYC. He put far more enough time into the show than he really needed too. For an entire year Zortman made a sustained effort to produce a clean, entertaining show. Unfortunately for him he never reached the pinnicle of success he was hoping for. This is largely due to the overbearing nature of the WSYC board and their inability to properly direct the DJs. In a field in which there should be virtually no limitations, I see only barriers to individual success. Keep in mind, this is what I have deducted after less than three months in being on Zack's show. From what I have seen, WSYC is not run by free-minded students but rather power hungry adults. If this fact can't be altered or at least mitigated then the future success of WSYC's DJs are in jeapardy. |

Comments: This is Steven Kane. As a former student at Shippensburg University, there are only a few things that I have been greatful for. One of the biggest pleasures while attending Ship was to be apart of the radio show with Zack Zortman. I was named co-anchor and the show was called The Double Z, Kane, and Setran in the Morning Show.
I can honestly say that the radio station had no flare, most of the radio shows were completely boring. The hosts, many of whom were board members, seemed to show no passion for what they were doing at the Ship radio station. They only played boring music and did what the sing-in sheet told them to do every number of minutes. I believe this was for resume work, but listening to their shows was very uninspiring. They gave no motivation to any of the students at meetings, as well as myself and Zack, except for a few of the members, whom I thank very much.
Many of the board members are corrupt, and I've been told by sources that the DJ of the Month award are only given to DJs that are liked personally by some of the board members. I know for a fact that a feww of the DJs that were awarded are good friends with the rest of the board, while others who work hard, like Zack, are shunned for breaking away from the mold.
The radio station is supposed to be student run and a fun thing to do, yet the board, again save for a few, really take this thing to heart. At the meetings, the people who sit in the front speak amongst themselves and talk about music that was just received, how their weekends were, or trips that were being taken for the station and all the while the students who were not on the board just sat there waiting to be complimented or asked questions to by the board.
I had no experience in radio before I met Zack. Once I asked him for advice on any kind of work at the station, he quickly asked me to be his direct co-host. He stated that he was planning to take college radio at Ship to a whole new level and do things differently from all the other DJs. When I say "different," I mean that we do funny sketches, have conversations, and bring in guests frequently and try and include our audience in our week-to-week topics and in depth conversations. Zack Zortman is the very essence of hard work for a radio show. Even at Shippensburg, where listeneres were small, he worked twice as hard as I did, and I worked a lot. He came up with many skits, ideas, and topics.
Our show went as far as to bring in a fe people from Philadelphia who are excellent musicians and played on air. The three weeks leading up to that were so hectic, but Zack kept everyone in line and even brought in Adam Fein AKA "Wolf Bailey" to help tech guru Alex Setran in coordinating the equipment to allow on-air band play. I truly felt like this was the real deal and how the radio business works. The show was a success and I give Zack full credit.
What the station did to Zack is inexcusable. A few swears were said on-air, but these things happen. I do not believe it to be fair to kick him off the air for these mishaps. What is worse is that the communications department went as far as to kick him out of the department itself. This is an absolute outrage especially in doing this to someone who was revolutionizing Shippensburg radio and would have been a great addition to the communications department. I thoroughly believe that a few people at the communications department and most of the people on the radio board are corrupt and they need to own up to what they did. Zack Zortman does not deserve this, as well as any student, and if this wrong is not made right, then the industry will truly have lost a great talent with nothing but the utmost passion in speaking to the community. |

Comments: I HAVE heard of Zach Zortman. His show was one of my favorites on the air. It was always a pleasure to be a guest on there. I even became the unofficial third cohost and was ALWAYS willing to be up at 5am and stay in the station until 12pm just to do his show.
It was because of Double Z that I got my own start in radio, founding "The Wolf Bayley Rock Show", a show that broke the digital listener peak 3 times, only to be out done by sports.
As a former member of the station myself, I can say that the system is strange. They give little to no support or encouragement to their DJs. During a station meeting, they even had the balls to tell us not to expect any listeners, or too many.
It was only with the help of a few exceptional members (Trevor Stottlemeyer, for example) that I was able to get the Blaze Bayley (Iron Maiden singer) interview to go through. The rest of the board only gave me resistance. When I interviewed the man again this year at my new station, I found nothing but support.
I'm tired of people using the name Howard Stern in a negative manner. There is nothing wrong with someone who pushes things further and takes initiative on his own to make the best damn show and to get the word out, as opposed to those who cower in fear of losing their broadcasting license; even when they do so little with it (with the exception of a few great shows like the Global Cafe).
Zortman sort of was the Howard Stern of the station. His show was hilarious, we jerked our guests around a good bit out of good clean humor. we had hilarious segments such as "The Oriental Express" news and "Heterosexually Speaking". Out of all the shows, no one could entertain like Zach Zortman; not even my show!
That's right Jim, Double Z WAS just a college radio DJ, and he only had a college radio show. But he made it MUCH more. I would refrain from dismissing the college radio circuit, considering the fact that we can broadcast digitally anywhere in the world makes up for the lack of FM range. Also, many of the great bands such as R.E.M got their first air play on college radio.
Since there are alot of flat lands out there in Shippensburg, WSYC has a much greater range then my station, and yet, I have more listeners at my new station. The phone lines are always ringing, and I'm always talking to the fans via the phone lines right on the air; something that can't be done at WSYC.
My station gets out into the community, and supports its DJs. The station has said that they have my back, another thing that WSYC never said.
I am a proud member of WCUR of 91.7FM in West Chester. While they do run things different, in the end, they treat me much better and give me more support than WSYC ever has. I'm sure if Zach were to come to West Chester, they would actually welcome his creative mind instead of neglect it; which was what lead to Zach's last show. |

Comments: odds are if you joined WSYC you were required to sign a contract....which clearly states that you are prohibited from using vulgur language on the radio.
its not rocket science. your not howard stern...you work for a college radio station in central PA.
i am a dedicated wsyc fan and alum...and i have never heard of you. due to your immature reaction from your release, im sure the station is not going to miss you. |

Comments: Also. I would like to commend some people @ WSYC that were indeed good to me and supportive. Bill Morgal-you're the man. Alex Feeman-keep it rocking. Sage-you'll be a great director. Travis Detwiler-you're a great guy, the Country Saloon is kickass and you were the one who trained me. Jim Shaffer-you're a good man. |

Comments: I would like to tell WSYC that they completely f***ed me over as a DJ. I volunteered as a freshman to be on the air from 6am to noon every Saturday and got absolutely no credit for it. It isn't WSYC's fault that my show was vulgar and that the FCC kicked me off the air but it is their fault for being such assholes to such a passionate DJ. My show this year averaged 60 digital listeners per week at a 9am show slot on Saturdays. I cared about my show and I loved what I did. The following pertains to all FCC regualted college DJs: DON'T EVER LET PEOPLE TELL YOU HOW TO RUN YOUR SHOW..... EVER!!!!!!!!!-Even if it means your show gets booted. At least you'll leave with the satisfaction of knowing your show kicked the ass of everything else on the station. |

I did the Jazz show lol and Classic Rock on Sunday nights for a while. I made the horrible mistake of cutting the Sunshine Daydream off of Sugar Magnolia! *gasp!* Tom Stelhorne (over at the Slate office) had a conip and made sure I heard about it. I actually stayed in radio (as Stacy Barnes and then Stacy O'Brien) till 2000. Nope, it doesn't pay but it was fun being a big fish in a little pond. The most fun you can have and get paid (well, almost). Where's Tom Kelly? Anyone who might remember me, drop me an email. |

Comments: Hello everyone. I had a great time my one year at Shippensburg. Loved my time at WSYC. Had a good time working with PD Dwayne Buffington and MD Doug Garmen. The GM at the time was a dolt. During our time at WSYC, we put on a great program on the anniversary of the pull out of Saigon. Live panel discussion on the air and a musical look at the Vietnam era. Great days in college radio.
Nothing beat the Jazz Break with Hawaii (Jimmy Rebar).
Lori Keith the GM after I left was great to work with when she was just like any of us.
Since my Ship Days, I have Programmed WIYQ in Johnstown, PA, Armed Forces Korea Network, was APD/MD at WYKS in Gainesville, Fla. Now I work as a Public Affairs Specialist for the Army's Training and Doctrine Command and work part time at WPTE in Virginia Beach.
Good luck guys and if you ever need a sounding board, feel free to contact me. |

Comments: Cheers To Neil Young for his new album "Living With War" featuring the track "Let's Impeach The President". The whole album streams for free from Neil's Garage.

Let's impeach the president for lying
And leading our country into war
Abusing all the power that we gave him
And shipping all our money out the door
He's the man who hired all the criminals
The White House shadows who hide behind closed doors
And bend the facts to fit with their new stories
Of why we have to send our men to war
Let's impeach the president for spying
On citizens inside their own homes
Breaking every law in the country
By tapping our computers and telephones
What if Al Qaeda blew up the levees
Would New Orleans have been safer that way
Sheltered by our government's protection
Or was someone just not home that day?
Let's impeach the president
For hijacking our religion and using it to get elected
Dividing our country into colors
And still leaving black people neglected
Thank god he's cracking down on steroids
Since he sold his old baseball team
There's lot of people looking at big trouble
But of course the president is clean
Thank God
