Comments:WTIT’s Early Years…The Untold Story

After reviewing the WTIT history carefully, I’m struck by the fact that no attempt was made to disclose what those early days were really like. What about all the groupies we used to have to fight off? Your mom, sweet as she is, was no help. Remember the two beautiful girls that showed up with their own roll-up Styrofoam mattresses? They wore the cutest li'l Girl Scout outfits they’d taken pains to modify into something much sluttier. Nan Stroker and Cathy Screams. Yeah, those were there names. That was quite a night. Sadly, I was still a virgin after they left.

What about the time the West Hartford police raided the studio only to find Bill Goodwretch’s sick collection of blow-up dolls? I still remember the look on their faces. Mercifully, for Billy’s sake, they only confiscated the naked ones. All the others, at least the full-sized ones, were wearing some sort of fetish outfits. I still wonder about his fondness for the midget blow-up dolls. Was cost a factor for our trust fund baby brother? Hardly. I think some other disturbing stuff was going on. Did he marry a little person?

You also failed to mention one of our proudest moments. The night Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and Janis Joplin’s car broke down right outside your home/studio on Soby Drive. Was that it or was it a three-car pile-up? In any case, they rang the bell and Janis said something about, “busted flat in West Hartford.” Your mom, who was always so classy and gracious, invited them all in to the living room. I don’t think she knew or even cared who they were. They were her guests and that was that. I remember her telling Bob he looked like a Rolling Stone.

I know Jimi was especially appreciative of the flock wallpaper even musing aloud how the material covering the light switches was like some sort of purple haze. After your mom called the tow truck, we all settled back to wait while drinking lemonade and eating crabmeat canapés. I was dying to get pictures of all of us but, try as we did, the flashcube on the Kodak Instamatic never worked. What a disappointment.

Countless other incidents have gone unmentioned. Can you say, “yearbook scandal?” I suggest you stop this cover-up and let the world see the real WTIT. Tell what really happened when families that no longer cared, or worse, encouraged such wild and cavalier behavior left hormonally overloaded teenage boys to their own shocking devices. Oh the humanity.

Comments:I've been hearing a lot about your website for a long time, but I was never able to check it out until now. In 1996 I bought a Dell 333 and it has been my only computer up until a couple of weeks ago. It's a little like owning a '71 Ford Pinto without an engine. It'll get you where you want to go, but very slowly and with great effort. And every so often it'll blow up.

So now that I've seen the WTIT website, I am filled with regret for the time wasted doing things like earning a living. I could have been having a good time. And what a great time I've had with you guys. I think that all the DJs have their fair share of comedic talent, but my favorite is Harvey Wallbanger. I became an instant fan. Fan, as in fanatic. It's that level of instant devotion, commensurate, I believe, to the level of his talent.

Well, I gotta go. I'm gonna check out the TIT blog and see if Harvey is a contributor. DAMN THAT GUY IS FUNNY!

Take Care, Bud.

But this post on Heather really moved me. Perhaps because I am the World's Oldest First Time Father right now...or maybe because it shows the real "non-WTIT" guy you are and whom I came to care about so long ago...I was unexpectedly moved.

Comments:Bud,
so you worked at WMLO as well? that was my first job after getting my First Class Radiotelephone license in l967. the basement studios would flood out when the tidal marsh got high, the cart machines wowed and fluttered, and one of the high school board-ops recorded the men's room toilet flushing and that flush was our legal hour ID for 6 months!
the building mysteriously burned down about 20 years ago but is still there, and you can still see some of the old studio equipment and transmitter when you look thru the window. I understand l570's successor has a CP for 50KW! who woulda thunk?

I am confused. You actual started doing this "tape radio" thing in High School. And you've got tapes interviewing chicks you dated in high school, in 1968-69. You've got my attention. Listen to tapes of you guys, from prom date to 2nd wives? Way cool. Time to share.

Did the picture thing, saw the DJs & read the "history". Dudes- it is fascinating. I just stumbled on google to here. I was looking for "comedy", and you call letters were on Page 2. When I think about you guys & you listening to an old tape, it must be like traveling back in time. Just to let you know the “myspace” listening choice, only works part of the time. I loved the bit about “america’s most wanted” or whatever you called it.

Thumbs up from the DJrr…
