| Comments: | I just happened upon this site when I googled Cournoyer. I was really surprised by the amount of entries and the information I have read. I was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. My grandfather told me the story of the origin of our Surname of Cornia and how it was derived from Cournoyer. About a week later I was watching a hockey game on TV and to my surprise, one of the players was Ivan Cournoyer. The story was told to me that Pierre Cournoyer was hired to drive a wagon across the plains for the early Mormon Pioneers to Salt Lake. When they arrived in Salt Lake, Pierre was paid and promptly got drunk. He was arrested and placed in jail. His named was recorded as Peter Cornia, he was fined the remainder or his pay and ended up settling in Utah. All the Cornia's are related through him and we are all related to the Cournoyer's. I had donated some money years ago to The Native American College Fund and noticed that a Cournoyer had received a scholarship and I think was going to school at the University of Nebraska. Hi to all my relatives. |

| Comments: | I have been researching my lines and was given information about the change in names. Enjoy... I have back to Leonard Hus 12 generations back, and back 18 generations on Jeanne Baillargeon... Larry Molumby July 24, 2010 HOW OUR FAMILY CAME TO HAVE FOUR LAST NAMES Hus → Millet → Beauchemin → Goodroad After Cartier and Champlain explored the St. Lawrence River and claimed this vast North American territory for France, the King wanted to quickly fill "New France" with colonists. He entrusted the entire territory to the Company of One Hundred Associates, with instructions to populate: "the said country with natural French Catholics, that by their example they might marshal the Indian nations to the Christian religion and to civil life, and even to establish royal authority over them, and to draw from the said newly discovered lands some advantageous commerce for the King." Louis XIII Royal Edict 1627 The Company was required to settle at least 4,000 men within 15 years. [They didn't come close to succeeding in this.] The first large land grant was made to a surgeon named Robert Giffard who had already been to Canada and loved the country. His land was called the Seigneurie of Beauport, a large area on the north bank of the St. Lawrence near the city of Quebec. One day in the mid-1660s, a young Frenchman named Paul Hus said farewell to his parents in Montigny, Normandy and signed an agreement to cross the Atlantic to work for Robert Giffard in New France. He probably agreed to work for three years and then claim his own land. By 1669, our ancestor Paul Hus was ready to begin his own household. He married Jeanne Baillargeon at Cap de la Madeleine, a settlement about 80 miles further up the river from Beauport. His wife had been born in Trois-Rivieres and captured by Iroquois when she was nine years old and had come to love their way of life so much that when French prisoners were liberated by the Carignan Regiment, she ran off and hid in the forest to avoid returning to the French settlements. But she was required to return and given a dowry of 50 ecus so that she could marry. When the Carignan Regiment had completed its campaign to pacify the Iroquois in 1668, most of the soldiers returned to France, but about 400 chose to remain in Canada. One of the officers, Pierre de Saurel, was given a new seigneurie on the south bank of the St. Lawrence where the Richelieu River enters from the south. The settlement was called Sorel. It was here that Paul Hus and Jeanne Baillargeon were to spend the rest of their lives and it was here that their children and their children's children would live over a period from about 1670 to 1750. Paul and Jeanne had fifteen children. Their children, in turn, had at least 86 children. Before long there were so many people named Hus in this small farming area, that it must have been difficult to sort them out. "As the phenomenal fecundity of the next several generations multiplied the number of people with the same names, so did the assumption of new names; if for no other reason than to distinguish one person or family from another. Because of this, lucky is the descendant today who can trace his lineage back to an original ancestor without finding a name change en route." LaForest, Our French--Canadian Ancestors, Vol 3, Chapter 2 So four of Paul Hus' most prolific male children decided, when they started their own families, to add another name that would differentiate their children from their brothers' children. Louis Hus, the firstborn of Paul's children, added the name Paul, so that his fourteen children were known by the last name of Hus dit Paul. ["dit" is the French word for "called"] Another son took the name "Cournoyer" so that his descendants were known as Hus dit Cournoyer. Another son took the name "LaTraverse" and his children were known by Hus dit LaTraverse. But our ancestor, Marc- Antoine, who married Francoise LaVallee, added the name "Millet" so that his ten children were known by the last name of Hus dit Millet. Why "Millet"? In an article entitled "Les surnoms des descendants de PAUL HUS" in the Memoires de la Societe Genealogique Canadienne Francaise, Leonce Millette, SJ explains that the word "millet" was used at the time to describe a type of tall grass used as hay. [This is confirmed by the Oxford English Dictionary]. He says that all documents show that Marc-Antoine was a farmer along the Chenal du Moine. So in his fields Marc-Antoine must have specialized in the culture of millet. There was certainly a great need in that era to nourish the cattle, sheep and horses. So, according to Millette, Millet took his name from his business. Francoise LaVallee's mother was a "King's Daughter" and her father, Jean LaVallee dit Petit Jean, was a member of the Carignan Regiment who decided to stay in Canada after the campaign. He was killed later in an Iroquois raid in 1692 while working as a woodcutter near Montreal. Now when Marc-Antoine Hus dit Millet's children were old enough to marry, and they were all still living in Sorel, they could see a time not far off when there would be hundreds of people named Hus dit Millet. So our ancestor in the third generation, also named Marc Antoine, decided that he needed a unique name for his descendants. Six months before his marriage in 1735, he and his fiancee Marie Ursule LaGuerce served as godparents at the baptism of his brother Claude's daughter. In that baptismal record dated 18 January 1735, Marc-Antoine's last name is given as "Millet dit Beauchemin. This is the first documented use of the Beauchemin name by our ancestors. Why "Beauchemin"? The second Marc-Antoine had a special need to differentiate himself from his father of the same name. According to Millette, the elder Marc-Antoine had the point of land where the river Yamaska entered the Chenal du Moine. This place had no road [and even on modern maps, the road stops before this place]. But his son had the adjacent farm, through which the road to Sorel passed. "C'etait le beau chemin, le 'chemin du roi.'" So the best way to distinguish the two was: "Marc-Antoine du ‘beauchemin’, fils; et Marc-Antoine Millet, le pere.” In other words, our ancestor was distinguished from his father by a name that indicated that he was the one who lived on the GOOD ROAD. Marc Antoine dit Beauchemin also quickly dropped the "Marc" from his first name. His marriage record of 18 July 1735 shows the name "Antoine Millet Beauchemin." Although his fourteen children used various combinations of Hus, Millet and Beauchemin, the most commonly used name was Beauchemin. The next name change took place almost a hundred years later when our ancestors moved into the English-speaking US. The ancestor we have known as Lewis Goodroad, who was born in Canada and lived in New York, Illinois, Iowa and South Dakota, was born Louis Beauchemin. This is shown in the baptismal records of the French church of Notre Dame in Rochester, New York. The latin record of the baptism of Lewis' first child William states that "On August 19, in the year of our Lord 1849, I the undersigned baptized an infant born on May 12 of the same year to Louis Beauchemin and Adeline Jouber, spouses from Canada, to whom I gave the name William. The godparents were Ignatius Joubert and Pauline Lavoix." And this is how the name evolved from HUS to MILLET to BEAUCHEMIN to GOODROAD over a period of 250 years. |

| Comments: | I want to say HELLO to ALL of the descendants of Paul Hus from Montigny, France who settled in Sorrel, Quebec, in the 1640's whose child took the name of Cournoyer (for some reason)and whose descendants went on to populate throughout North America! Wouldn't it be amazing, mind boggling, if perhaps one day there could be an organized reunion for all of us? Anyone out there wish to consider this? My grandmother, Esther Cournoyer and grandfather, Edward Joseph Cournoyer were from Tweed, Ontario. Somehow, my father's sur-name, Clovis Joseph (Toby)was changed to Courneya along with his 12 siblings. Granny used to speak of Angele, Simon, Peter |

I would like to know Charlotte's middle name, and whether she ever went by the first name of "Mattie" (I know she went by "Lottie"). Also, another post mentions their children. I need to verify if the following are all children of Charlotte Cournoyer-Wilcott and Joseph Wilcott: Albert Wilcott (Born: 1871); Charlotte (Lottie/Lotta) Wilcott (Born: 1875); Dennis Wilcott (Born: 1879); Phyllis Ann Wilcott (Born 1882 or 1884); Tillie Wilcott (Born: 1884); Felix James Wilcott (Born: 1886); Utha (Eutha) C. Wilcott (Born: 1890); Alfred Paul Wilcott (Born: 1892); Joseph H. Wilcott (Born: 1895). Also, does anyone know if Phyllis and Tillie are the same person? | Comments: | I am seeking any information on Joseph (Joe) Wilcott and Charlotte Cournoyer. I would like to know Charlotte's middle name, and whether she went by the first name of "Mattie". Also, another post mentions their children. I need to verify if the following are all children of Charlotte and Joseph: Albert Wilcott (Born: 1871) Charlotte (Lotta) Wilcott (Born: 1875) Dennis Wilcott (Born: 1879) Tillie Wilcott (Born: 1884) Felix James Wilcott (Born: 1886) Utha (Eutha) C. Wilcott (Born: 1890) Alfred Paul Wilcott (Born: 1892) Joseph H. Wilcott (Born: 1895) Another post mentions a daughter named Phyllis. Does anyone know if Phyllis and Tillie are the same person? Please email me: robwilcott@gmail.com if you have any information regarding the above. Thanks! |

| Comments: | I am the author of a dictionary relating to the History of the province of Quebec. www.memoireduquebec.com It is written in french. Here is what it says about Paul Hus the ancestor of the Cournoyer. I venture to say that he is the ancestor of all the Cournoyer originating from Quebec. I also give you the CV of some Cournoyer who left their mark in Quebec History Cournoyer (étymologie). | Comments: | I'm wondering when you were doing research on the Cournoyer Family if you ever heard that they changed the surname to Kuhn, my grandmother Jessie Kuhn Allaire who was born in Ontanogan/Rockland Michigan the UP once told me when I was a young child that her real last name for her family was Cournoyer, pronounced "Coon er yeah" and they shorted it to Kuhn, my great grandfather was Charles Kuhn born in Mi? but the family was from French Canada, he disappeared off the face of the earth around 1889, that year between Jan and August they lost 3 children two to a Diptheria epidemic in 6 days and one in August of 1889 to a Cholera epidemic I have not found any death records for him we did check the County Court house, he was married in Greenland Mi to my Great Grandmother Elizabeth Lambey/Lambert, His Sister Mary was his witness, I believe his Father was Louis Kuhn, who was born in Canada who married Harriet no maiden name available. Any light you could shed would be interesting if you found any family members that lived in the Up of Michigan. I live in Wi. Thanks. |

| Comments: | I enjoyed reading the Dreambook. I was married into the Cournoyer family in 1964 in MA. There is a fairly large branch of the family in the Worcester, MA area. They are likely a branch of the Quebec Cournoyers. There was a Monsignor in the Montreal area whose name was Maurice. The name of the father of the Holden, MA (near Worcester) branch was Hector and his wife was Lea. The children were Alfred, Raphael, Loretta, Bernice and Bernard (twins) Henry and Leonard. Nearly all of these have died...but, in true Cournoyer fashion, they have left many descendants. There are also many Cournoyers in LA, including a granson of Raphael. |

| Comments: | I've heard a story that my Grandfather Fred Cournoyer of MA (my father was born in 1952 for reference to my Grandfather's age) was the first man to steer/drive the rear part of a hook-and-ladder fire truck in his city or county or possibly the USA. Who knows for sure, but I am very curious about my fathers side of the family because I do not know them. I belive my Grandparents now reside in Brockton, MA or West Bridgewater, MA..... I don't even konw if those are real cities because I have never been to MA before. If anyone knows my father, Jeff G Cournoyer, or any of his realtives.... His parents are Fred and Freda....and I've heard stories that he had a brother named Ted who is/was 6'10". My fathers mother would still have an english accent becuase Fred met her in the WWII days in Europe(or so the story goes). I would really like to reunite with this half of my family which I have only met when I was an infant. If you know anything, send me an email please and thank you. |

I was interested to know if you are related to any Plichtas or if these were only as a result of your efforts at "Find A Grave"? If you are in contact with ANY Plichta, from any place and at any time in history, I would appreciate if you would forward my name and email address to them. I have been researching the Surname PLICHTA for nearly 20 years and have compiled a substantial database of PLICHTA data from every database that I could find. |

Does anyone know anything about the Hus history? |

| Comments: | Signed previously a couple of years ago. In that time through family and the internet, distant relatives emailing etc, I have now traced our routes back to the 1400-1500 France. It's all there on the internet. look up the Peloquin Heritage and there's great info on the orig. ancestor Paul Hus. There's a picture of the church in Rouen Normandy where Paul Hus was babtised and parents Leonard Hus and Marguerite L'enfant were married. We now know Jeanne Baillargeon's parents were Mathurin Baillargeon and Marie Metayer, and his parents were Thomas Baillargeon and Marie Mignot. It goes on from there. |

My maternal grandfather was Emil Cournoyer who was married to Lillian Lavanchard of Watertown, NY. Lillian later moved to Ormond Beach, FL where my parents lived. She died and is buried there. I live in Signal Mountain, TN, a suburb of Chattanooga. |

My Maternal Uncle James Wilcott from Milwaukee WI, Native of Stratford WI married a lady named Margaret Allain of Milwaukee, formerly from Unity area. Wondering if they were some kind of shirt-tail relation to each other. Jim Wilcott's mother was Charlotte Cournoyer, fa.: Joe Wilcott. Strangely enough Joe Wilcott was divorced from Charlotte and moved out east and had another family of half sibs to my grandfather Felix Wilcott. We have never heard anything about them though one woman visited my aunt one time and told her she would get in touch with her again...she never did. |

| Comments: | Those wanting genealogy information on the family will be interested to know that the province of Quebec has a genealogical website that allows you to trace back your ancestry. http://www.nosorigines.qc.ca/genealogie.aspx?lng=en The genealogy of Canada and Quebec is one of the very best documented in the world and goes back to its beginning to be finally lost in France. The site will even let you make your family tree! For our American cousins, it would probably be useful to know the name of your Cournoyer ancestor to first have migrated to the USA. There are French Canadian centers in the USA that have the genealogies there, so you may try searching from there too. The Catholic Church has baptisimal records, so tracing your ancestors via the parishes where they were baptised and married gives you information to trace the line back. |

| Comments: | My name is Kenneth D. O'Farrell and back in 1974 I worked in Miami, FL for a roofing contractor named John Cournoyer. For nearly three months we spent five days a week working together repairing roofs. On Wednesday 13 March 1974 John Cournoyer suffered a fatal heart attack on a roof we were working on in Coral Cables. He was forty-six years of age. Essentially, he passed away as I conducted CPR on him. Needless to say, I've never forgotten that day nor John Cournoyer. He used to tell me that his family originally came from the Montreal, Quebec area. He had a brother living in the Miami area who was also a roofing contractor at the time. Perhaps the John Cournoyer I knew is related to the Cournoyer family that has sponsored this website? Regardless, earlier today I was speaking to someone about my experience watching John's final moments. Hence, he's been on my mind. |

| Comments: | I first became interested in your website when I saw the picture of the four Wilcott sisters. I've researched since then and have determined the four women are Madeline Dupee, Lucy Cournoyer, Anna Cournoyer, and Louise Trudeau. I know the oldest one is Madeline, and I think the top one is Louise, the bottom one Lucy and the right side one Anna, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have any information on Anna and Simon Cournoyer? I found it interesting to find out that three Cournoyers (Dennis, Simon and Charlotte) of the same family married three Wilcotts (Lucy, Anna, and Joseph) of the same family. I've figured this out by researching two volumes of history of the Marshfield area. Lucy Wilcott's uncle (Louis Rivers)had much to do with the settling of Marshfield. |

| Comments: | My father Charles Raymond Cournoyer was born in Tweed ONT to Joseph Cournoyer and Maude (LaBarge) Cournoyer. He had three brothers who all went by their middle names: Frank, Pete, and Wilford. It's amazing how spread the clan has become since arriving in Canada in the 1600's, and the various ways we have come to spell the family name. One of my favorite activities when traveling to different cities is to go through the phone book and count how my Cournoyer's, Cournyea's, Courneyor's, Courneyea's there are. France has exported some very wonderful people! |

| Comments: | Hi! I'm married to Ryan Randall Cournoyer, son of Randy, grandson of Alfred Albert. I have lots of information on Alfred's family and am trying to get more dates on others in the family. Dawn Griesbach (Randy's sister) and I have been trying to dig up some information and put together a family tree. This website has helped a lot but I'm still missing some information. Anyone have any information on Dennis and Lucy Cournoyer's kids, please email me and I'd love to share with you what I have. Thanks a lot. Thank you also for putting together such a neat website!! |

| Comments: | Enjoy a virtual visit to the ancestral marsh along the St. Laurence at Lac Saint-Pierre just outside of Sorel. Our ancestors would put their cows out to pasture for the summer on the islands---this is still done. http://www.survoldulacsaintpierre.com/survol/anglais/index.html Enjoy! Generations of Cournoyers have. |
