| Comments: | The X-Sums 98 is a must for any cross-number afficionado. It worth much less then lifetime subscription for Dell Magazine:) and its interface is perfect. I.e. I quite literally mean that there is no way for its improvement. Back in 98 CPUs were slow and monitors were CRT-based, therefore computer versions of cross-numbers could take a lot of time to generate and solving them was harmful for the eyes. Now both of these reasons to prefer pencil and paper are gone, so I wonder why isn't this program much more popular than it seemingly is. My only explanation is: the obsolete name repells the potential customers! |

I've already sent you an e-mail to make sure that I'm not buying into something that I cannot afford at this time. The one thing your web page does not do is tell me that if I download your viewer along with the games from the page "More-or-Less Weekly Cross Sums Puzzle", is that I can download the games provided on this page and play them off-line on my computer as fast or as slow to my heart's content, without any purchase obligation. This page seems to show that I download your Viewer program on my computer followed by downloading the games available. Correct me if I'm wrong. After I down load the six games you provided, if I like what I get, then I would subscribe to your service and get the 1,000,000 games for the $19.95 subscription cost. | Comments: | I have written a program for solving cross sums. Of the
five Dell 14x14 puzzles I have used for testing, four have been solved between 1/100 and 1.0 seconds on my 1Ghz machine. The remaining one, however, took 7 minutes 20 seconds. I guess that a skilled puzzler might rank the difficulty of these puzzles in something like the computer time order, although the time ratio of easiest/hardest (1:44,000) probably wouldn't bear out. I am interested in knowing by what technique composed puzzles are guaranteed a unique solution. Is it a general design principle or a heavily computational task? Sums for years - used to buy the Dell Puzzle Books every month, and that was my favorite. Have always said that you should be able to have a computer program to generate these, and you've proven me correct. I must say that I am getting pretty good at them, but not even close to my expert daughter. My difficulty is remembering the deterministic numbers after 2's, 3's and 4's. |

Dell "Math and Logic Problems" mag. I even got my daughter into doing them when she was about 7! I also do the Figure Logics,Logic Problems(which are prob. her favorite)and Word Arithmetics,etc. But the cross sums come first! I'm really glad I stumbled on this site on a whim!! |

I've had the full version for a week or so and have been playing like crazy! No bugs found yet. Seem to have trouble hitting the right area with the mouse cursor, sometimes not noticing 'til I hit a snag later on. Still, it works very well and is true to the printed version in Dell magazines. I found this site at Everett Kaser's great site. (Puzzle lovers check out www.kaser.com and try Sherlock.) Xsums 98 is a great bargain at $20. Thanks Thomas. |

world! I was reproducing these Dell crossword wonders about 7 years ago and have a library of approximately 600 puzzles. I print them, double-sided copy them, and have them handy when we travel.
