Comments:I'd like to express my heartfelt condolences to the passing of Mark a few years ago. I had the pleasure of following his carrer and seeing him live in Miami wit Gino in 79. What an amazing talent. He is very much missed by hundreds of drummers of all ages.

My question is - has anyone transcribed Mark's grooves and licks in a drum book? being a professional drummer and teacher I would be very interested in fnding out if that is available. Please respond if possible. With Love and peace God Bless mark's family and his amazing contribution.

Comments:I can relate to Mark's fight. I have polycystic kidney disease, and am currently on dialysis. I use a technique called peritoneal dialysis, which I do at home four times a day, seven days a week. I too am a musician(keyboards and vocals).

I have fought very hard to be able to return to the stage, so I believe that I know what Mark went through.

May he rest in God's embrace, in peace.

Comments:Please, translate from spanish to english this text to Marks family. I can't type in english, because my english is too poor... sorry.

Comments:I knew some of Mark Craney! Saw him a number of years ago on Oprah, with his mother, and knew he was ill for the first time -- I had wondered where he had gone, for my knowledge of his amazing abilities followed him "'round the drumkit," as I practiced to his licks on "Brother To Brother," with Gino Vanelli's Band, and what a pleasure it must have been for Gino, a drummer himself, to have found someone like Mark, who was so very special, unique in so many ways. He must have been a real treat to know personally. I am a known drummer in my part of the world, and I know good and well gifted drummers, those who are a breed apart from all the rest! Mark was definitely one of those!

I saw his pic for the first time on the Internet just last year, and tonight was led here to his homepage by that site: www.drumworld.com. I haven't read anything about this site -- only clicked on the guestbook, and chose to speak, as if to him personally tonight!

I wish I had known you, I know we would have liked one another! You could have taught me much about the traps, about the art, and more than likely, about patience, because although I am older now, I couldn't stand to not have the ability to play taken from me. It takes a special man who has reached a certain plateau of excellence, and having had that taken away by disease, to still be able to smile and go on, especially having a great deal of friends, all of whom are able to say you were one of the best. I heart that too, and loved to learn from you when with Gino's Band.

Mrs Craney: Your son through his gift, had the ability to speak to millions of lovers of music, and in the minds and hearts of those millions, he will never die. Thank you for bringing a son into the world, and allowing him to do what he was born to do, instead of getting in his way, as my family did! Music was nasty, and so I didn't have my first drumkit, until I bought it at 20 years of age. I could have been so much better, had I started when I was beating on the table at Sunday dinner, and being told to stop, rather than asked, "Is that something you'd really like to learn how to do well?" I can imagine how your heart's been broken, and you will, and no dear friend will ever forget his early death. But, just think of the hearts he's touched over his life, and recognize that although he passed away a young man, he has touched many many more than most! It is my pleasure to have a few words to say about a man I knew, because he spoke to me by his music!

I say I knew him,

Comments:I wanted to add my thoughts on a spectacular drummer and one of all time favourite players. Mark played with great authority and mastery but also had tremendous feel. He really got through to me as a player and it was remarkable that he was self-taught. I am proud to read that he was also a first class person and admire his "no excuses" attitude. His playing on Brother to Brother, A and Imaginary Voyager are an incredible legacy and I would have loved to have met him, if only to say thank you. I own the JT Slipstream dvd and that is extremely inspiring.

Comments:I am a drummer working in the UK and europe. I first heard Mark with Gino Vanelli, his technique on 'Apaloosa' was spellbinding, his feel on 'Wheels of life' epitomises great feel. The feel of a master drummer, he was, is and always will be one of the most seminal influences of my career.
It took me 2 years to learn all those chops.....!
A sad loss to music, to drummers and to all who knew him personally.

Comments:I saw Mark with JT on the "A" tour here in St Louis and was quite taken with his drumming. I tried to follow his Career after JT but lost track of him. I am so very sad to hear of his passing but heartened by Ian Anderson's descriptions of his fight to live and also of Ian's warm reguard for him. He must have been a great guy and I am sure all those who knew him are better because of it and feel blessed because of it as well.
Peace to you Mark and your family till we all meet again.

Comments:I knew Mark only trought the A album from Jethro Tull a long time ago. But I just had lunch with Mark Olson from South Dakota and he told me they were friends after I told Mark (Olson) that my wife had played violin as the concert master with David Palmer (former Tull member and now Dee Palmer)on a Montreal tour (the world can be so small). My 3 boys are now starting to play music and Fleurant my second son is starting to be a good drummer at 13. Want's me to know more about Mr. Craney.

Best regards to friends and family,

Comments:I wish i could have met Mark Craney. Here i'm thinking i was the only person who had been right handed yet learned to play the kit backwards. Personally I believe its up to the individual as to how he or she feels most comfortable when first learning, rather a left right thing. Yet you have your critics who want one hand (most rt.) developed as your riding hand. well let them listen to you. Its great to add Mark Craney to the list of greats, who not only played great parts but played with great and unique style, like Elvin & Billy, and many others. just to have recently learned about mark and what he has done and been through I am humbled by his talent and strength. Never again will "sweat the small stuff". I also feel strengthened by the spirit you and your friends represented. I will use that for strength in anything I choose to do. Thanks Patrick Calhoune

Comments:I would like to share with you these few words. I studied Drums with Mark for 6 months in CA and he really helped me grow not just in drumming but also as a person, Mark was not just a great drummer but also a great person. I really wished that I could thank him personally once again for all he did to me but unfortunately I live in Malta so far away and never made it again in time to do so. Mark will be always in my heart for ever. I still have the bass pedal he gave me as a gift before I left in fact I just used it in my last tour in Germany. I pray for him always but I am sure that God already welcomed him with his arms open.

Comments:It was the '89/'90 year for me @ PIT in Hollywood. Doanne Perry was doing an open study lab and had left for awhile to play with Tull. He had gotten Mark to fill in for him while away. This is where i first met mark. We got to exchange some serious snare drum duet improv stuff. I never heard anyone play on one drum in that way. He really knew how to go to a different level in mind while improvising. We hit it off real well. He was a very kind easy going guy and devoted his time unselfishly and really gave me a chance to express myself. He then invited me to attend his open jam night in Canoga Park. This would become one of the few most memorable experiences of my life. There were two drum kits and some monster players there. I actually got to play a Tower tune with him. One of my Favs, "Don't Change Horses". That was 16 years ago. And I feel just as high today as I did back then from the experience. A few years after that my career slowly faded away as a working drummer until just a few weeks ago. I,ve been googling PIT teachers and players from my past to see where everyone was and what they were playing these days. And this was how i found about Mark's unfortunate passing. Mark's inspiration has helped me to continue on as a player wherever it may take me. He'll always be in my thoughts and soul. Especially when i play. My deepest condolences go out to his family, friends and loved one's, And all of those fellow drummers and musicians who were fortunate enough to be touched by Mark's Heart and soul. Rest Well My Friend. I'll Never Forget what you gave to me!

Comments:Mark,

I am a 45 year old musician (guitar, bass keyboards) that grew up listeing to you with Gino Vanelli and Jean Luc. The thing that always made you stand out to me as a drummer is your assertiveness and tone. Your drums always sounded warm and rich with a definite tonal quality. Your work on Brother to Brother is unparalled and I still listen to the LP and can't believe the way you play.

Thank you for being a musical inspiration to me. I hope you know that you have touched many people through your brilliant playing.

Sincerely,

John Immel

Comments:Hello Everyone! I am Mark's older sister Anne. Having just read everyone's tributes and memories of my little brother, Jeanne and I are always thrilled by the outpouring of love (for you who knew him), and great respect of his amazing talent. Of course, we knew he possessed an amazing God-given talent when we were growing up, and he showed us all when he went to CA and made history by being chosen by those three giants in the business; Jean Luc Ponty, Gino Vanelli(we love you and your brothers), and Ian Anderson (man, we thank you and yours for making Mark part of your family).

Mark, you gave us much breathtakingly beautiful music to remember him by, we thank you. I'm sure you are making majestic music up in heaven with all the angels. Cant wait to see you up there, beloved little brother! I love you always. And Jeanne, you were his angel on earth, thank you. Daisy sends her love to all of you too!

Comments:I was at the memorial for Mark and was impressed with mostly how everyone said he always had time to stop and see how his friends were and was genuinely comcerned. I met Mark a few years ago breifly at a gig I was playing with the Trouble Makers in Siouw Falls and He was a very Genuine person and easy to talk to. Not something you would expect from a superstar. I have been touched by his playing and strive to do better because for that level of playing. I pray that he did know the Lord as his sister said. He will be greatly missed but But his music will always be with us as is his memories. Kevin

Comments:Growing up in the seventies in England, early teenager, just starting out playing drums. My influences were the English rock drummers, Ian Paice, John Bonham, Keith Moon. Then I got into jazz rock and Billy Cobham, which started my quest to listen to more drumming in this genre and I heard Jean Luc Ponty's imaginary voyage album. The drumming just blew me away, so I had to look who was playing on this album and yes it was Mark Craney. For some reason that album and the drumming has always stayed with me and it was with great sadness I heard of his death. I pinched a few drumming licks from him on that album and I will pass them on to my students.

I,too, am a Diabetic and your story has only fueled my fire to excell in life as you did. I'll be a keeper of the flame in your honor for as long as I can play. God Bless You, Your family, and your many, many friends who will always love you and miss you. Long Live Mark!

Comments:I'm listening to 'A', the Jethro Tull album you did. You were a blessing. From the highest heavens of percussion, a Neil Peart kind of blessing.

I'm glad Ian came across you. 'A' is the most rhythmically difficult album Jethro Tull album ever did, and that's 2 years shy of 40 years now. The one record you were on. I think you may have challenged the master more than he challenged you. Quite an achievement.

I know you are gone now. I'm sorry for your struggle. Thank you again.

Comments:I was saddened to hear of Mark Craney passing on. I will never forget the first time I heard Gino Vanelli's Brother to Brother album in 1978. Mark's superb playing and composition of the drum parts made a very deep impression on me, I was blown away. Being an amateur drummer, I learned so much from that album and tried to emulate and incorporate his "chops" into my own personal drumming toolbox. I wore out 2 Brother to Brother Vinyl records playing along with the album daily. I still play along to the CD(had to get a copy I couldn't wear out)to this day. What an inspiration he was/is to my drumming!

Mark, your drum throne may be empty now here in this world but we know you have a new glorious throne to occupy. We all miss you and will never forget you.

Comments:I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing this great drummer, Mark Craney with Gino Vanelli when they toured through San Antonio, Texas in the late seventies. I was always a huge fan of Gino's, (still am). I knew that Gino always had great drummers working with him. Mark was definitley one of his very best. All one need do is listen to the Brother to Brother recording and Mark's phenomonal ability is immediatley apparent. I also happened to be a Jethro Tull fan, and that is when I realized how great a drummer Mark was. I am a drummer, and Gino and Tull always have the greatest drummers in the world working with them. Mark is the only drummer that has the distintion of having been chosen by two of the most prolific and musically demanding artists in the world to record and perform live with. These two giant artists allowed Mark to demonstrate and record for all time some of the finest drumming the world will ever hear. Mark's work with Tull and Vanelli is burned into many a drummers memory forever.
God bless Mark's family
God bless Mark and thank him for the wonderful opportunity to know him through his recordings. I only wish I could have met him, he seems to have been an asset to the human race.
Peace

Comments:This is amazing! I was on the drummerworld website when I saw Mark Craney's name and clicked on his name to check him out and then I realized when I saw the list of who he played with that I actually saw him playing with the Tower of Power at the now defunct Chestnut Cabaret in Philadelphia sometime in the late 80's I believe. I always wondered who the drumer was because I play drums also and Mark was awesome but that was the only time I saw him play with TOP. The next year they came through they had a drummer that wasn't half as good.

Comments:Mark,

Perhaps you're not here physically to read this, but maybe somehow from afar you can appreciate this note.

Thank you for your awe-inspiring drumming--the kind, in fact, that urged me on to take up the kit myself. I regret that I was never able to meet you in person, but I hope someday/somewhere that I can shake your hand and say thank you for pursuing your gift and for mastering it to the fullest.

Rest in peace. You deserve it.
A 'fan.'
