| Comments: | Hi Yvonne. I came across your page by chance and read every word of it. Because of you I was able to share this experience with my partner Sally. She has always been so supportive of me. When I started at Upper St it was a scary experience and at a time when I was most confused about my life. I remember it like it was yesterday standing at the bus stop across the road trying to build up the courage to open that door.
You gave me the strength to accept myself for what i am. You always had the ready mixture of empathy and taking the piss which I've always found just a unique combination that could only be you. I followed you to both French Place and Liverpool Road. When I discovered that Liverpool Road had closed I had no way of contacting you as i was never part of the TV scene as such. I never went back to French Place after you left. I am happy to say I was part of that ground-breaking history that you created for without you I know none of it would have been possible. Many of us mimic the life of women but no one could ever mimic you. I would love the opportunity to meet with you again to thank you personally for all that you did for me. Thank you for being there and thank you for the opportunity you gave me to share the experience with others. I was looking through some VERY old photos and came across a cutting from a Glad Rag showing me and a few other girls dancing at a Cocktail Party at French Place in July 1992. Gosh what memories. Yvonne, you won't remember me I'm sure but you were such a support for me during very dark days and while I'm only now starting the transition I knew back then would happen sometime, at least I'm following my dream on a sound psychological footing. The club back then was the only place I was comfortable expressing myself and even now I miss the total unpretentiousness of the place. I attended the group at French Place as a "weekend regular" for I guess almost two years (between 1986 - 88), until the atmosphere post Yvonne changed for the worse and the group had less and less to offer me and my needs. I called myself "Lesley" (member 1036) back in those days, I'd have been just 30 at the time. People might remember me as a wavy reddish brunette, who looked more feminine than most, and weilded a serious looking SLR camera and flash and brought in the large photo albums ..... Of course I've since "found myself" as Laura, and I'm "post-op" and all that. Good friends back then were Ken & Michelle (I forget Ken's femme name), Harry (Andrea)who lived in Woodberry Down Estate N4 and attended more often than not in guy mode, Billie who owned a flat just by Hampstead Heath, Brenda the "brickie", extrovert hairdresser Sue (post-op now for many years), and especially young Alison who worked on tubes / trains, lived in Richmond and travelled confidently across London as a woman on her LT pass. I guess Alison too will now have fulfilled her driving need to be a woman, and I'd love to re-make contact with her .... Yvonne's website really brings old memories (happy and sad) flooding back ! I'm not sure if you are going to see this but I hope you do. I'm one of many people who owe you a huge debt of thanks from back in the mid eighties to mid nineties when I was struggling to find myself, You were my first real contact at French place and then later on by the penny farthing in Islington, as well as using your dressing service in Liverpool rd Islington.. Well times have totally changed for me and I'm fully post op (GRS in march 2003)now. After having a breakdown in 1997 i had to eventually face up to the truth inside me. You may remember me back in those days as either Michelle (my femme name) or Robin ( my male name) and I use to work in Islington way back in 1994-96 at a publishing house, and also went on to work at "AdamasEve" in Camden at weekends ( thats why I had to stop going to the support group next door to the PF) My Name is now Kimberley Whittaker and I do a lot of 121 and on-line(via tvchix website) support on a voluntary basis, as well as assisting a number of local authorities and police support groups. My "Made-in-the-USA" 1984-11-14 Biber-Girl self had the privilege to meet and enjoy not only yourself at "The TV/TS Group" on Saturday 1986-02-15, but your male persona (nee Webb) and a couple of helpers — a kindly somewhat timid "Jimmy," and a "Karen Richards" — at the group's office from 14.30-19.00 the day before... I wrote in my journal that evening: "Very nice meeting... Yvonne (has) very powerful and credible arguments that TS is (an) extension of TV... claims to have been TS and elected not to continue... we need (a) definite legal meaning for TS, we've all got our own definitions and understandings!" Other than I had met a Stanley Barker boarding the same #30 bus, I made no comments in my journal vis-a-vis my attendance or the folk at the Saturday evening "The TV/TS Group" get-together... Your being stabbed in the back by members of our ilk is unfortunately par for the course... it has been my observation over the years, and I'm sure yours, too, that folk experiencing dissociative gender identification do not countenance their peers lightly... | Comments: | I joined the TV/TS group, along with a friend about 1983-4 and what a time we had! I met so many friends thanks to that group. And some still say hello to me today! I remember almost 20 trannies changing around my one bedroom flat once! And there were the late nights discussing everything under the sun. The dances, the camaraderie, the Philbeach, the laughter, the excitment...Yvonne was the supreme hostess and knowing her has been one of the highlights of my alternative, but now, oh so ordinary life.
