How did you get to know of the web site?: Sheer Indulgence!
Comments:I first met Carlo when he was with the Flowerpot Men, initially at the Latino in South Shields, later in Germany. Sadly, apart from 3 German gigs (a promotional venture for Yardleys to promote their new London Look range of cosmetics) our professional paths sadly never crossed. I had known Iris from doing a week at the Latino with Long John Baldry.
Whilst appearing as a guest on Del Richards radio show I received a message of good wishes from Iris and Carlo. Then I learnt that they had dumped Wembley for a more stately residential retreat in the north-east, just a mile or so from my family. Being so close whenever I visted the family in Boldon, I ventured forth to accept the kind hospitality of The Little's. I enjoyed having shortish chats with Carlo (he was by then suffering bravely from his illness) and I was amazed by the bravery and devoting shown by Iris to her dear husband.
I offer my most sincere condolences and my very best wishes for the future to Iris and her family. Much love, Mal

Comments:Sir Carlo,
You rank NUMBER ONE among the rest of 'em for me; Bonzo, Moonie, Ringo, Charlie, etc....but I have come to realize YOU were the INSPIRING spearhead for most of the Great British Drummers of the Rock 'n' Roll years and beyond.
Your recorded work is phenomenal and we miss you. We, the drummers of the rest of the world, humbly thank you. I will never forget the kind email you sent me back in 2002. It was very encouraging and inspiring. God bless you, rest in peace, my friend.

Comments:I'm writing this with tears in my eye's. I'm sorry but I'm not good with words, but Carlo was one in a million, the best brother-in-law anyone could wish for. Although we were 300 miles away for most of our lives and having a 23 year age difference, we were as close as we would have been living in the same town.

I remember being about 11 years old (very early 70's) and going out to work with him on his bread van early in the morning when most people were still in thier beds, riding around London with my personal visitors guide, Carlo. Great days that I'll treasure forever.

I saw the Carlo most people didn't, the loving Husband, Father, Grandfather and true freind.......Sorry I can't write any more.

I miss you Carlo, Love Gary...

How did you get to know of the web site?: Joe Waite of Lancaster
Comments:I played with Carlo firstly with Chris Lamb and the Universals - we toured the south of England in the sixties. The band evolved in to the Circles and recorded Take your Time on Island records. That band evolved into the Savages and we played for Screaming Lord Sutch for a considerable time. One of our gigs was the Olympia in Paris, but, mainly touring all over England, recording such gems as Saturday Club with Brian Matthews. A couple of years later Carlo asked me to join a rock band with Stuart Coleman on bass, Freddie Fingers Lee on keyboards, myself on guitar and of course Carlo on drums. I played several more gigs with him over the years - I rate Carlo as one of the best rock drummers of all time, he was there right at the beginning showing drummers, including Keith Moon, how to do it!!

I am sure that if there is a set of drums in heaven - he'll be playing them. I am only sorry that I was not able to speak to him before the end, I was informed of his illness by a mutual friend, Joe Waite of Lancaster.

I remember our time with Ged, and Nick when we played with Billie Davis, and the short time I spent with Sutch, and various other odd gigs.
He impressed me as a solid stable contrast to the general chaos of the music scene.
Always reliable and professional.
He has most certainly left his mark on the the British Music scene, which will be the poorer for his passing.

Comments:Carlo was an uncle that I will always look up to.
He inspired me, encouraged me and even shared his best whiskey with me. I'll never forget him.

I first saw him play when I was 13 with the Savages. It was an awesome gig supported by Jonny Cooper Clarke in London.
I was young and impressionable, and this was the best place for me to be at that time.

The sound of his kit was superb... This was an audience of canabis smoking students who didn't give a shit, but they seemed to shut up quickly when this band started playing.
It was wierd, but the combination of Carlos drumming, and Sutch's vocals brought the place to life. Jack the Ripper stood out big time!
I'll never forget the way the Savages captivated an impossible audience. It influenced me big time.

I grew up in the North East, Yet Carlo lived in London when I was younger. I loved to visit the family down there, and whenever I did I made the most of it.
I would sit up late and chat to Uncle Carl who seemed to be able to answer any of my questions regarding music, and was one of the only people prepared to spend so much time chatting to a daft kid.
I always felt as though he respected me as I respected him. He once took me out on one of his "Bread runs", collecting and delivering rolls all over London in the early hours of the morning. I didn't mind getting up so early in the morning, because I was with one of my mates.
I think that sums him up... If you gave that guy an ounce of respect he gave you a ton back. He was magic!

I recall a time when I was about 17, we wrote a piece of music together on his keyboard, and we decided that it would be ideal for a TV show. We were just messing about, but the track came together. He had a great ear for a melody and pulled a part from a demo that I'd made that was so obscure I wouldn't have noticed if he hadn't pointed it out. Working with him that time, you get an insight into how enjoyable he must have been to work with on a long term basis.

Carlos bravery towards the end of his life is something to aspire to. Another relative was in hospital not so long ago for major heart surgery. I went to visit him at the Freeman in Newcastle, and as unwell as he was, Carlo was still there to visit. I can't imagine how he must have felt making the journey. That man must have had the strength of an Ox.

Form now on every drink I have is for you uncle Carl, and I hope I have the pleasure of meeting you again!

Lee

My fondest memory of Carlo is when he, Dave Sutch and I, went to Rayners Lane cinema one afternoon after work to see the Elvis film, "That's The Way It Is". Also of the time when my wife and I came to one of your parties at your house where Carlo introduced mr to Stuart Coleman and Niel Christian. My memories of him are of a warm human being and total rock n roller (which was great). As a young drummer today his style was much different to mine and it inspired me as did his background which is well presented on this site. It was great to see something so complete in style from a bit if a by gone scene and was very intresting to learn about as a music student myself who is geting more and more into music everyday i get older including good ol RnB. Was glad to have played a few songs on behalf him and his charity event in the Lord Clyde although i fluffed up a bit because i was never going to be as good as him at what he did best. It was a privedlidge to have known him and this has helped put a few things in perspetive in my life now too.

Comments:I've just heard of CARLO'S death on Saturday August 6th. Another true 'legend' has gone. I first saw Carlo with Sutch in Romford then The Royal Oak Dagenham, what a band!!! Many years later I worked with him in the studio on something completely different to The Savages - -Florida Sun!!! It was still a thrill to work with him. We also performed together on the odd gig for Joe Meek anniversaries, and when Dave Sutch passed away I had the pleasure of singing in the band for a couple songs - -priceless memories for me.
Miss you Carlo. Thanks for the memories.

I remember dancing to The Savages. Jeez, where did the time go? I would love to go back in a time machine and visit those years. The kids today call it ancient music. Comments:Hi Carlo,
I had the pleasure of playing Tenor sax with the Savages on two occasions, the first the months tour of Italy in July 1966 with Ronnie Harwood ,some local gigs, and later that year a months tour of Sweden where you were the drummer and drove the group van, Tony Dangerfield was also in the band (according to Tony that would make me a real savage)!we also spent the night in a Swedish police station when we couldn't find anywhere to stay, and the police let us stay the night in some pretty comfotable cells...they even gave us breakfast !
This is a great site and has brought back some fond memories,
The last time I saw Dave Sutch was in 1991 when he did a Save the children charity gig for me ...I was greatly saddened by his death.

Comments:Iris and Carlo,

I mailed you the tape today 5/2 of what I believe to be two All Stars tracks pilfered from the original Immediate collection and broadcast underground in the later sixties on German pop radio. Originally there were three but on closer inspection the third track is indeed Steelin. I think that when it was broadcast the DJ used tapes obviously from the first two (one of them is a take-off on Chuck Berry's Boogie and reminds me of an early Jeff's Boogie) and the actual British Archives LP for the third without adjusting the broadcast mixing board thereby creating a lot of extra bass whoop on the third track (lp) which again is Steelin. The whole thing was recorded right off short wave radio onto a sixties tabletop cassette by Yardbirds historian Richard MacKay. Anyways when you get it have a listen and let me know. Thank you for the updated story on how Page was in the booth the whole time with Glyn Johns and Jeff did all the guitar work. On the later compilations I guess they did credit him as playing on the two other tracks that Page was credited for on the 1971 Guitar Boogie Compilation. Although they should have given you the writing credits. The only other track that surfaced on the later anthologies that I don't have is Piano Shuffle which I presume featured Nicky. If you like the tape and determine the first two tracks to be indeed from those sessions maybe you could send me one of the later addition compilations on CD...autographed of course. You, Cliff Barton, and Rick Brown were a great rythym section...Thanks

Comments:Of course, North Americans got a very filtered view of what was really happening in the UK as far as rock 'n roll was concerned. If we were exceptionally lucky, the Beatles, Stones, Herman and the Hermits or Freddie and the Dreamers would appear on the Ed Sullivan Show on Sunday nights to deliver a couple of tunes. Us chubby 13-year-olds thought that this was basically "it" - that this *was* the 60s British pop scene. My parents (both Brits) had nothing to contribute. It took years to disabuse ourselves of this notion. Your site and reminiscences represent a much-needed edcational resource, and I'm really glad I found it. Rock on!

Comments:Fascinating story. I saw you a couple of times playing with the savages. I remember the solo, very impressive. One time was at Stourbridge, when some idiot threw something on stage which hit the lead guitarist in the eye, and the drum solo took over for a few minutes until everything descended into chaos!!! I belive the number being played at the time was some kind of Russian dance classic!!!! I don't know the title but the melody is still in my head!!!
Good luck, great website.

Comments:Im so glad to see the people embrace the roots of U.K music. So many kids out there have no clue as to who laid the road that todays music has arrived on. I'm 39 yrs. old from california and have studied music all of my life. As music evolves maybe the angry sene will give way to clarity. I love most all music and I miss the (4) pc. bands. Take care & keep up the good works.
P.S.

Comments:Dear Mr Little,I would like to thank you for sharing the memories of your experience of the music scene in what was, in my estimation, the most exciting and creative time the music scene in the UK has ever known,I was born in 1960,but was lucky to inherit the record collections of various aunts and uncles, who were late teens, early 20s, in the 60s,!Very sadly the greed of the industry, has over the years, all but destroyed the real virtuosos like yourself and only a handful remain,I wish you all the very best and thank you once more for your excellent site, in appreciation, hail hail rock and roll,! Comments:A great read. I saw 'em all in the 60's:- Cyril, Long John, Rod, Downliners (my personal favourites) but never knew the names of the supporting musicians (played bass and harp myself). Reading this I think "What a wonderful bunch". God Bless them all and you for keeping the 'best burst of blues we ever knew' alive and kicking in our hearts.

Comments:I only met Carlo last November in the "Lord Clyde" public house in South Shields, while playing with "Tonto's Horse"
He has since jammed with us on a couple of occasions. We had a great time at a jam session between Chistmas and New year. Carlo's family were there as well, and a good time was had by all. Who could forget Carlo's drum solo?
Anyway Carlo, I think the website is great. Loads of information and a cool trip back to the sixties.

Keep on playin'
Keep on rokin'

Best wishes
