They hail from Vilnius (Laukaitis family), Kaunus (Varonauskas and Petrauskas family), Shaulai, Majekis, and Miraimpolis (Zvingis family). I understand that "Zvingis" is a very rare name over there.
I am very interested in the Paganism of Lithuania. I have observed that when the Catholics came in what they could not convert, they massacred. Although as a social worker, I must admit that organized religion such as Catholicism, Judiasm, and Lutheranism has its place in Lithuanian culture. I appreciate all religions and cultures of man. Personally, I practice new thought, as in "The Secret" and the law of attraction. I would like to travel to Lithuania in the Summer of 07 or 08 and look up family. I would appreciate any leads on how to research long-lost relatives over there. |

| Comments: | I was happy to find another Lithuanian ! I too went to Saturday school and celebrated Kucious. I was surprised about the paganism though. I am a christian, I was raised Catholic, and every Lugan person i ve knwn was rasied Catholic. It was tuahgt as much as part of the culture as singing and dancing was, to me it was always the most beautiful thing, about the culture . Ty for posting the folktales ! Egle was a fave of mine gorwing up it brought back lots of memeories to read it !

His father, as a young boy walked to Sibera to fetch his father from a work camp. Sturdy stock! They gathered family and left for America in the late 20's early 30's far as I have gathered. As a child I learned Lituanian around the dinner table on Sundays.
I'm seeking roots here in the Pagan culture. I belong to a moonlodge and have felt very strongly of late of learning much more of the mystical ways of my pagan roots, I am a very ritualistic person having once been a eucuristic minister I am now seeking to serve my sisters in a same type of way. I have been an artist all my life and understand I come from a long line of very talented Lituanian arts. Right now I need your help if you have the time to help me discover the meaning of a particular symbol. It is located on the Lituanian site that covers:" The Balts,Short visit to Virtual Exhibition of Lithuanian Cultural Heritage". The symbol appears to be a petroglyph. Very bird like/almost rune looking. It is in the upper R corner of that page. I keep seeing the "prongs" or U looking symbol on Lituanian pages too, what exactly does it mean? | Comments: | There's a growing movement within Belarus to try and claim Lithuanian and other Baltic History as their own.
What does Vilnius mean? The name comes from the Vilna river. Vilnius was founded at the confluence (where 2 rivers meet) of the Vilna and Neris Rivers. As to documented proof that the Grand Duchy existed before the Unification of Lithuania and Poland, there are many sources (mainly catholic clerics - italian, german and polish)documenting Mindaugas and his predessors. Vilnius wasn't taken away from Belarus in 1939 (Belarus didn't exist at the time, it was part of the USSR), it was "taken" from Poland. Any land disputes that Lithuania has had in the last 100 years has been with Poland. |
