Comments:I was trying to find a song my parents sang to me as a child called NaNeNaNa and and much to my wonder found it here. I believe my father, Frank Sorrell (Sorrentino) worked with Mr. Cornell during his Sammy Kaye days. My father was a guitarist with Sammy Kaye then went out on his own and had moderate success in New York and Virginia. Believe it or not - I think my step mother still has the original 78rpm recording of the song that Mr. Cornell recorded with my dad's band. There were a couple of other songs that I think Mr. Cornell recorded with my dad - "It's Merry Christmas Time" and "Rock Island Line". I am delighted that I found this site!!

I know , first hand, that these "soft protests " were very heartwarming to enemies of of our fighting men. Be they combative "agrarian reformers" or Hollywood liberals. One rule of warfarfe dear lady is you never give away the location of your machine gun and you never give ammo to your enemies. No matter how "soft" you think the protest may be...Raymond Duke, CWO US Army, Retired....e un vero peccato che il suo marito aveva una pronuncia in italiano cosi bruta ....

Comments:Thank you Iris, for this wonderful web-site and the gallery of pictures of Don. I had the great pleasure of meeting Don at the Deal Golf Club, in Deal, NJ in the early 60's where he was invited to play a round of golf as the guest of one of the members. I was there that day and was introduced to him by the member. We talked while waiting for their tee off time, and I told him what an honor it was to meet him in person, being a big fan of his great voice and talent. Well, I almost fell on the ground when he invited me to accompany them for the round of golf! He was so kind and gracious to me, and I will never forget him for it! He gave me a gift that day, which was the memory of this beautiful man and legend I will have always!

I considered him a GREAT performer then, and my wife and I still listen to his beautiful voice today! He sang from the heart then, and his voice still touches our heart and soul today!

All the best Iris,

Steve

Comments:Don is my second cousin. My mother, Rita Santarcangelo Stone, is his first cousin. Her mother, Tess Varlaro Santarcangelo, enjoyed having Don/Luigi as her nephew.

I've just finished writing our family memoir, and I've included our own wonderful singer in it. When he was appearing in Indianapolis in the 1950's, he came out to our house. I was then a budding singer, and it was fun to meet the professional in the family. I remember seeing him on the Ed Sullivan show, too, when I was in my teens.

I was working for The New York Times and usually read the paper on the train going to work. It was a jolt to come across his obituary that day in February, 2004. I sent copies to my mother and my aunt, Pauline, too, his cousins.

So, I'm pleased to see this web site and the opportunities for his work to live on.

All the best, Ellen

Comments:My husband and I were sitting at the kitchen table talking about the great singers of our time and the first name was Don Cornell. We started humming some of our favorite songs of his, which, how can you pick a favorite...they're all favorites. I came to this site because there was one song that I had forgotton the exact name. I knew it had broken hearts in it somewhere....we knew the tune....but didn't remember the complete name. Well, needless-to-say, after reviewing the sight, it was Play Some Music For Broken Hearts. I love that song. Anyway, we had such a great trip down memory lane with Don Cornell, a great singer with a "pure" voice.

Comments:Dear Beautiful Singer,
Oh, I know that you will not read these words, but perhaps, where you are, up there in God's realm, you will hear the tapping of my message as I express my thoughts about a man and his beautiful voice, your voice. I was just a young woman, back then, when I listened to your lovely singing on the radio and then early television. And, here and now, in my late years, I find you once again on Zora's Dumpling Newsletter. I am so lucky to be able to hear you once. Your golden voice brings tears to my eyes. I had not realized so much time had passed, but yes, it has and will continue to do so. I thank your wife, Iris, and Zora for keeping your music and memories alive. I know God has received a beautiful addition to his ever-growing heavenly chorus of angels, who sing eternally in the heavens above. I am lucky to have been one to have lived during your earthly time, and I thank you for sharing your talents. Again, thank you, Zora and Iris for maintaining Mr. Cornell's web pages.

Comments:My earliest memory of Don Cornell goes back to 1947 when he appeared with the Sammy Kaye band, on stage at the Capitol theater, in Wash, DC.
As a GI stationed at nearby Ft. Belvoir, VA, I often came to DC on weekends and took in a first-run movie and a live stage show (freebie), such as Eddie Howard, Spike Jones, etc.
I'd never heard of Don Cornell until he put down his cornet (I think) and sang a solo. He seemed a bit awkward as he made his way to the front of the stage, but when he sang, WOW!
I really miss the big band music and the great performers of that era.
