Both my parents were Slovak; John Hirchak born in Ramey, Pa.in 1902 and Anna Kocis born in Lambert, Pa. in 1912.There are many variations of Hirchak; Herchock,Hircak are two ways that his brothers spelled the name to make it easier for Americans to say it.I have a postcard like picture of my mother's dad tombstone in Bardejov. As my grandmother purchased the stone her name is on the bottom of it.Moros was her maiden name.I have a number of pictures of folks from the area but don't know who they are.
If anyone hears of a trip to eastern Slovakia I would definitely be interested in hearing about it.There are many trips to Prague and the Czech Republic with day trips to Bratislava but hard to find one just on eastern Slovakia.
Will share your site with others.
Thank you for putting it together.

We lost a potatoe and mushroom soup recipie from my gramdmother, when she passed a few years ago she took the recipie with her.No one in the family got it? Really miss it (and her), especially around the holidays! Looking to revive it somehow, it was started with a rue and had flour, mushrooms, cream and potatoes in it. Do not know much else!Tried to duplicate it, but no luck! Wondering if yours was similar? Her maiden name was Stanko, married is Polcha. We make homemade Kolachi,Halusky, etc... trying to pass them to our children. Any clues or ideas where to find such a recipie would be greatly appreciated! Have a great New Year!

I would like to thank you for the lovely site you have...I came across it today Dec.23. I have been searching the web for some Czech greeting cards, to email to my releatives in Czech..and I came across your site.
Your site has brought back lots of Czech memories, I have left Czech in 1975 and have not been back since. Seeing your web site has lightened up my Vanoce and helped me remember my Christmas in Czech. Thank you so much.Hugs Nada

entry:I'm interested in your cookbook. Both of my grandparents were Czech and lived just a field away from us. As a child I grew up spending a lot of time in my Grandparents kitchen on their farm. I loved everything that came from my Mamaw's oven and stove top. She did it all from her own butter and cottage cheese, to her kolache. I just finished making some poppy seed kolache last night for our Christmas get together. It is so sad to me that the recipes I enjoyed so much as a child is now a dying art. Thanks for being someone that is keeping it alive.

We did have snow in Prague several weeks ago and I loved seeing the street cars discharging and picking up passengers on Ujezd (uu yes t) near the Castle or closer to the famous church of the Baby Jesus. -- I could go on and on because I love being and American who married a Czech and have been living here for 18 years! I have given myself 5-6 years to do this with the first three years given to study and research about the Czech Republic. I have just completed "The Coasts of Bohemia" and have many more to read. I also want to include, as a central theme, the thread of freedom that runs through all of us and how only a few are courageous enough to seek it out. I am also attempting to learn the language with the hopes of visiting in a few years. Anyone who can suggest good reading for my task - their suggestions would be welcome. My supervisor is of Czech ancestry and put me onto this site. Merry Christmas to all. Phonetically - Yeqooee!

entry:Zora! I am so happy! In my genealogy searches on line through ancestry.com, I have found a descendant of the Kepka family. I was searching for authentication, regarding the brothers of Bart Kepka (my grandfather)...Mike, John, Vojtech, Vaclav, Rudolph and Joseph and of course a sister, Anna Kepka Karel. I only knew of their given names, no dates or anything else. Remarkably, my search took me to descendants of my father's uncle, Mike Kepka who had three daughters, Anna, Emma and Bessie Kepka. Emma married Edward Neckar, Sr., and his son, Edward Neckar, Jr. has confirmed my suppositions. Edward has confirmed that John and Marie Kepka owned the butcher shop on Crawford Avenue They had three sons, Joseph, Rudolph and John. John Sr., is my father's Uncle. But the one thing that tied us all together was Edward's mentioning that Anna (nee Kepka) Karel was his grandfather Mike's sister...also my grandfather's sister. I just had to let you know that a light has pierced this darkness and I am hoping that someone might read this posting and further light my way to success.

Thank you, Zora, for your kindness...for your wonderful newsletters...and again, for bringing the music of my heritage into my home. As my uncle George always said, "keep up the good works."

entry:Hi Zora,
Your newsletter just gets better and better if that is at all possible. Thought it had exceeded the limits way back, but you continue nourishing us with your Czech recipes, informing us with up-to-date Czech news and entertaining us with delightful Czech music. Oh! it is great to make Knedliky by.

I wanted to thank you for posting my Czech Ancestors' Kepka names...Thank you. Now I have another request. My Slavicek names. If you can, I'd really appreciate it. There wasn't any response, unfortunately, for Kepka, but maybe we'll hit the mark with Slavicek. I attempted to send this information to your personal email, but it keeps bouncing back.

Thank you, Zora, for posting the Kepka names. Oddly enough, I didn't get one response. I still believe there is a connection to the Kepkas at the Crawford Sausage Shop, circa 1900 - 1925 - maybe earlier. A cousin of mine in her late 80s (with a sharp mind) stated emphatically that John Kepka who owned the shop, back then, was my father's and her mother's uncle.

She also told me about my uncle George Kepka who served in the Flying Tigers (I already knew this). He was both of our uncles - brother to my father and her mother. She told me the name of the boat he went over on and came back on and how he went over as a doctor because all of the men joining the Flying Tigers were sent over as having different occupations...it was all so secret - at the time, no one, not even family members could know when or where they were to leave the states. In my online searches I found all of this information to be true, so I do believe she knows what she's talking about when she said John Kepka from the original Crawford Sausage Shop, now known as Daisy Brand products, was our great uncle.

Anyway, if you have room in your next letter, would you mention the Slaviceks. I read about the Slaviceks in the old country in one of your recent newsletters so thought posting in your great newsletter may bring a response.

From my mother's side of the family:
Jan Slavicek, b. May 16 1821 in Dunoviz, Pisek, Czechoslovakia, d. Sept 11, 1895 in Chicago, IL.
His wife: Anastasia Mrazek, b. June 16, 1842 in Pisek, Czech, they married abt. 1857 in Ceprovice, Czechoslavkia.

Children: Albert, b.1854 -
Only knew of 11 children, but Vojtech was listed in my grandfather Bart's obituary as a son.
Joseph, b. 1861
John, b. 1863
Frank, b. 1862
Agnes, b. 1866, married James Fiala
Anna (my grandmother) b. July 26, 1869, married Tomas Dvorak in Chicago, d. September 25, 1930 in Chicago.
Michael, b. 1871
Marie, b. 1872, married John Mulac
Thomas Slavicek (Slavik in some Census enumerations), b. 1873
Charles, b. 1876
Viktoria, b. 1878, married John Pribyl
Antonie, b. 1881m. John Kalousek, second marriage a Mr. Serecino (name spelled different ways in obituaries). I can't locate Serecino in census enumerations. I do have the spouses of the male Slaviceks, if anyone reads this and it looks familiar.

I remain ever so thankful,
Betty

entry:Believe it or not, winter does come to north Florida (Atlantic Beach) and with it come time to cook and bake my favorite Bohemian dishes. Having been brought up in Cicero, Illinois in a Czech neighborhood, the essence of good food was imbedded into my genes. Now approaching my 70's, I still long for the wonderful meals and pastrys my family would serve on Sundays and on special celebrations.

So while "fishing on the internet to find a good recipe for Bohemian rye bread, I found this "treasure site." The opening web-page music almost brought tears to my eyes as I intantly remembered my grandmothers singing happy songs in their kitchens. As a boy I'd spend hours helping them knead the bread dough and carefully place the fillings onto the kolacky dough cut outs.

When I freaquently return to the Chicago area, I always visit the quickly diminishing Bohemian neighborhood stores and restaurants where I eat my fill of duck, goose and pork dishes. I also shop for breads, pastrys and sausages like jaternice and cebulaty. My favorite is Crawford Sauge Comapny in Chicago on Crawford Avenue. It's been run by the Kepka family for three gernations and their pasky is to die for. They have a website in case you're intersted.

This site will certainly be among my "Favorites" in my web browser. If only to hear the beautiful singer and music.

Thank you for keeping the Czech "flame" burning bright.

entry: Hi, Loved your website, first timers, interested in knowing more about the cruise that you are offering in the 2008 year. My father was born in czech and came over when he was 2 years old, my wife and I went to Czech Republic in Dec of 2005 during the Christmas Markets. Had a great time. Hope to hear from you soon we live in Ontario Canada does that effect the polka cruise at all.
