entry:Oh! I have just learned of Zora's passing! My deepest sympathy to her family and personal friends. Zora and I spoke on the phone a couple of times. She had posted my URL in her newsletter. She was a very kind person. She also posted some of my ancestor's names that I was researching. Zora's advice to me,in essence, because I mentioned that I would probably never be able to go on one of her cruises due to health reasons, money constraints, etc., etc., etc., was time is passing, live now. Learning of her death was such a shock to me. She seemed so full of life that it hurts to know there will not be Zora around, but I know that her spirit is still with us, here on earth, especially with her loving family. Thank you, Zora, for your advice, your great newsletter, and for being the person God granted to touch us in one way or another. I wish I had really known you.

entry:The Dumpling was a rare find for me. I've been trying to create a family tree. My maternal grandparents were named Anna Chicvara [nee Wapner] and Peter Chicvara. I have not been able to find the original name of Chicvara. It was changed when my grandfather came to America. My Dad's parents have more common names. John Horejs and Marie Ann Novotny. I was amazed at the number of people with the name Horejs! If anyone has any information about the name Chicvara, please let me know. This is a wonderful newsletter and I'm so happy to have found it.

entry:I came upon your website doing some searching. My Father was Slovak and my Mother was Italian so when it comes to delicious homemade dishes I'm a very lucky man. I have been on a quest for many years trying to find the background on a very simple dish my Slovak Grandmother made for me at every request. The best way to describe it was a very thin potatoe pancake, almost like a crepe. I do not know the proper Slovak spelling but if you were to pronounce it phonetically it would be "look-she". Sh made it with left over mashed potatoes, flour and tons of real butter. I have been trying to duplicate it, came close, but never the same. I try to make it every year for Christmas Eve dinner with the Balbaki/Sauerkraut and the Balbaki/Poppy Seed. I also learned to make the mushroom soup with wild mushrooms my father and grandfather taught me to pick. If any of your subscribers could help out with suggestions, recipes, or any information at all, I would be very grateful. As the generations pass on, unfortunately so do these special dishes, customs and traditions.

Thank you for your time,

I found your site in the Fraternal magazine. My Mother and Sister were some of the women that founded the Phillips Wisconsin Czech fest. My Mother has passed on (93 years old ) but my Sister still participates.

The best thing we did do before my Mother passed on was to put her recipes in a Cook Book: Czech and collected recipes of Helen Fiala.

You are a special person to put this site together. We all thank you. Wish I were closer to some polka dancing, maybe the Kolache & dumplings wouldn't be sticking to me, I did love to dance.

Thank you again.

entry:Hallo Mrs. Zora:

On behalf of my whole family (Harmonika Pospisil) I would like to thank you for the space you gave us for our Press Release, photos etc.. Your webzine is very nice and I can see that you have a lot of visitors/readers. Myself, I preach for years well known saying that ‘Music does not have any borders’. I am finding that this is a truth over and over again. My whole life I am involved in media. Thirty years in Czech radio and now as a moderator of Czech music program on Czech TV. My whole family is often performing on public concerts.

I had the pleasure to get acquainted with Czech – American immigrants in 1996 where we done with my friends musicians a two months concerts circuit for instance in Silver Dollar City Bronson MI and other US locations. There we have seen the Czech ingrown hospitality, when people were inviting us into their homes and across the states lines.

We have very good memories from this tourney.

To You dear Mrs. Zorka, we are wishing you all the best, success in your work, happiness and good health. Also, only nice people around you ! Once again, we thank you and hope that we will have a good cooperation in the future. I believe that it will be also your shown support in giving as an exposure that many more Dumplings readers will find out about our Czech TV program ‘Za Vesnickymi Muzikanty’. I hope that some of those new found friends will want to purchase our recordings.

We hope that the exposure in your webzine will lead to further assistance in future.

Many greetings to all fans of beautiful Czech music, which is known all over the world.

P.s.

We appreciate also help from Peter Solarik, who co founded in Canada ‘Pospisil Accordion’ fan club and is helping us to propagate Czech music.

entry:Hallo Zora,
děkuji jménem FAMILY HARMONIKA POSPISIL za nadherne stranky, resp. řádky a fotografie, ktere jste nám zásluhou Petera Solarika z Kanady věnovala. Mnoho lidí nás zvalo k sobě i do okolních států. Moc rádi na tu dobu vzpomínáme!!! Vám, milá paní Zorko, přeji ve vaší bezvadné práci hodně úspěchů, štěstí, k tomu zdraví a "hodně dobrých lidí kolem sebe". Ještě jednou děkuji a těším se na další "setkání na dálku". Věřím, že díky publicitě u vás, se najdou další a další zájemci o sledování pořadů České televize "Za vesnckými muzikanty", nebo si někdo bude chtít obohatit fonotéku i o naše nahrávky. I na takovou spolupráci se moc těšíme!
S muzikantskou úctou zdravím všechny milovníky a ctitele krásné melodické české hudby, která dobývá stále srdečněji svět - Josef Pospíšil s rodinou
P.S. Velký dík a pozdravy i panu Peteru Solarikovi, který založil až v Kanadě náš Fan Club a velice obětavě a úspěšně naši práci a hlavně melodickou českou muziku tak skvěle propaguje!!!

An amik friend showed me your new site. Congratulations!
I grew up in Houston and am an Aggie Aerospace Engineer and massage therapist in California. It was nice to see that the Klimas wrote a book! I remember going over to their house for dinner in the 70's, but lost contact (please forward to them if not inconvenient). I have a book also (on my site, not on pubmedcentral yet!); maybe we can trade when I visit?

Both my parents were Slovak; John Hirchak born in Ramey, Pa.in 1902 and Anna Kocis born in Lambert, Pa. in 1912.There are many variations of Hirchak; Herchock,Hircak are two ways that his brothers spelled the name to make it easier for Americans to say it.I have a postcard like picture of my mother's dad tombstone in Bardejov. As my grandmother purchased the stone her name is on the bottom of it.Moros was her maiden name.I have a number of pictures of folks from the area but don't know who they are.
If anyone hears of a trip to eastern Slovakia I would definitely be interested in hearing about it.There are many trips to Prague and the Czech Republic with day trips to Bratislava but hard to find one just on eastern Slovakia.
Will share your site with others.
Thank you for putting it together.

We lost a potatoe and mushroom soup recipie from my gramdmother, when she passed a few years ago she took the recipie with her.No one in the family got it? Really miss it (and her), especially around the holidays! Looking to revive it somehow, it was started with a rue and had flour, mushrooms, cream and potatoes in it. Do not know much else!Tried to duplicate it, but no luck! Wondering if yours was similar? Her maiden name was Stanko, married is Polcha. We make homemade Kolachi,Halusky, etc... trying to pass them to our children. Any clues or ideas where to find such a recipie would be greatly appreciated! Have a great New Year!

I loved everything that came from my Mamaw's oven and stove top. She did it all from her own butter and cottage cheese, to her kolache. I just finished making some poppy seed kolache last night for our Christmas get together. It is so sad to me that the recipes I enjoyed so much as a child is now a dying art. Thanks for the wonderful site. My husband's Czech/American daughters in America will love seeing and hearing this bit of Czech in a language they can understand. Thank You. Diky moc.
