| Comments: | I loved reading your blog entry, linked from Regina Hackett's P-I column. As it happens, I'm in the midst of a Bukowski (re)reading marathon, and currently nearly at the end of the Black Sparrow edition of "Women." I love the cover and the paper--it reminds me of Mary Reynolds surrealist bookbindings. Yum!

| Comments: | Hmmmm...I've lived in Seattle for most of my 40-years' of life (I'm not a transplant from CA or a hippy enclave) and I've been a member of SMB since 1998. The patrons of the gym and, specifically, the owners (they are ALSO small business owners in Fremont) have a right to park their fossil-fuel guzzling vehicles on SMB private property, as well as the city streets, without undue hardship brought about by a "minority" of people (you) who think the gym is stepping on the toes of their neighbors. Quite the contrary. SMB’s neighbors are being very un-neighborly. What serves the interest of a minority of people does not serve the interests of the community at large. Have you ever stopped to think about the interests of the patrons at SMB? Don’t WE have a right to drive our vehicles to a health club that we pay membership dues to? According to you, we don’t have that right. You want us to “walk” to the gym or “bike” to the gym. SMB has been at the Fremont location for how many years? And how long have the other businesses been there? Your airport analogy is weak, at best. It’s not a logical analogy, because SMB was in Fremont LONG before Fremont’s facelift when all the little boutiques and restaurants moved-in. Wake up people. You are clearly wrong and you need to step-back and examine your conscience a little closer. I whole-heartedly support the lawsuit brought by SMB.
[Zverina replies: Patrons can still drive to the SMB parking lot on Sundays when the Market is in effect. SMB has no greater claim to the public streets than anyone else. The Market would not be occuring if it weren't for the consent of the majority of businesses and residents in the area, so please stop whining about having to walk one block to the gym if and when the SMB and adjacent lots fill up. There is plenty of street parking nearby and a little fresh air might do you good. The lawsuit is specious and your post reeks of a grotesque sense of entitlement. You make me sick. -rz] |

| Comments: | I loved your page about the Barter Faire. I'm originally from Seattle, but my family moved to the Aneas Valley (the turnoff is about five miles past the turnoff for the Barter Faire) and looking at the pictures and reading about your experience made me feel homesick in a good way. I'm in school thousands of miles away now, so I missed last year's Barter Faire, and I'll miss this year's too. I hope i get to go back within the next few years as it is truly a wonderful experience. |

| Comments: | I like your Picture of the Day alot and check it regularly. I have noticed that you have taken the same stance that I have on local issues, national issues, and international issues many times. Do not let anyone know - however I am responsible for much of the anti-clearchannel sentiment (and some with anti-aids and anti-war sentiment as well). I do go overboard sometimes, however I once almost got arrested by the police for shooting paint balls at billboard and they came to my residence in the middle of the night, pounded on my apartment door for hours yelling for me to let them in, and then after several hours of this they towed my car away after taking pictures of it at 3:30 am the day just before X-Mas. All of, or most, of the Seattle Police Determent’s agencies take the entire week off and get off at Noon that day before X-Mas, and the next Monday was also a holiday - so it took me until the next Tuesday to clear my name of the Clear channel charges that I had done $10,000 in damages making what I had a Gross Misdemeanor or a felony or something terrible. However, in a hour I was able to talk my way out of that and then go about getting my car back (it came to $150 for the four days of impound - I think.
So, I wanted you to check out my art on my website and tell me what you think, and my poetry I wrote after the 2003 War Protests here in Seattle. I know that you might like it and that you should enjoy hearing a similar voice in rebellion and a view shared by another person interested in and a patron of the arts here in Seattle. I could fill you in on the facts (quite the story indeed!)but the end result was I met Jerry Diamond and he changed my life. Today (12/13/04) I could not get him out of my mind and thought I'd do a surf. Your page appeared and there he was. I wish I had more photos of this immensely spiritual and gifted man. I suggest to anybody to go and have fun and be yourself cause no matter who you are they love you there. You can also get in touch from some of the older Faire goers and really sitdown and talk and just see what interesting stories they have to tell. So i suggest to see you there and bring a soul for bartering!!!!

| Comments: | I guess I look at this from the other side of the fence. I left Seattle 12 years ago and just moved back and when you asked the question, "What do you think of lwhen you think of Fremont?", my answer is Sound Mind & Body. I lived up close to the zoo when the only hotspots in Fremont were the Buckaroo Tavern and Costas Opa. Actually, my favorite place was Market Time. I moved to Eastlake and began to go to Vickie and Richard's class at the UW, followed them to Wallingford and then on to Fremont. It brought me back to the neighborhood, even when there wasn't much there, and would make stops in some of the places close by. Fremont has radically changed. If you ask me SM&B probably helped in that transformation. I don't remember a Farmer's market, so that may have begun after SM&B came to the neighborhood. They are a business and will watch out for their clients and their own interests, certainly, but you do need to give them some credit for helping transform Fremont into the "hip" place it's become. |

| Comments: | This was not a dream, but an amazing sight to see. Turning the corner into the alley between Fremont Ave. and Evanston Ave. North, I saw a raptor of some kind that had just caught its prey: a small grey mouse, I think. This bird was unusual for Fremont-I have lived here for seven years and though I have seen eagles have never seen any other raptors. I would like help identifying it. It was not as large as a red-tailed hawk. According to my bird books, it looks like an American Kestrel, but I have never seen one before. Have there been other sightings by Fremonsters or other Seattlites? |

"back at the ranch" i was in the Spirit Room, that's usually forbidden (i guess), but seeing as it's the christmas season and all, there was a lot more activity in there. we had a plastic bag of meat (a person's? a deer?) sliced steak size that we had to place there. when we entered there was this citar (sp?) floating, and then fell once we entered. as we tried to find a place for the bag, we were aware of other things moving around- and i knew there really were such things as spirits... saw kristen and told her i was thinking of her and Jerry, because i had just gone to the david grisman concert. good morning. strange- thanks again. |

| Comments: | I'm with a band of conquistadors, humping it through the dense jungles of S. America. It's a tough march and a lot of my conquistadors pals are dying left and right. Suddenly we come to a clearing and in the middle is a large baptist church. oh did i tell you cheech was one of the conquistadors? he was. we've come to a utopia in the middle of the jungle and the baptists invite us to stay. Once we agree to stay, a baptist nurse come to us with a tray of rubbing alcohol and surgical implements. We are then told that we must become castratos if we are to stay in their utopia. Cheech pleads at first but then gives in. I look the other way and find myself on a sailboat with werver herzog. I start to interview Herzog and he starts to get really pissed at the questions I'm asking, he then pulls out from his coat pocket photos of my childhood, specificaly emberassing moments in my childhood, he makes fun of me. |

If you are interested, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE call me at Carkeek Park Vet (206) 789-8505 or (206) 235-5904 I am Emily. THIS CAT NEEDS A HOME!!!!! |

| Comments: | Dear Paulina,
I might pray for the families. I might pray for the victims -- even though they're dead. I might pray in Islam. You just said to pray, right? You didn't specify any religion, so you don't have any second thoughts about a call to prayer, right? What has prayer got to do with it? Why is war so closely tied to religion? Why is the flag equated with a belief in a Judeo-Christian monotheistic, masculine god? This generalization implies that separation of church and state was apparently repealed in the 1950s, when they added "In God We Trust" to paper currency. I see flags mounted on freeway overpasses and I wonder what those who placed them were thinking. Before the Vietnam War, the display of an American Flag was meant to: (a) Display pride of being a US Citizen, or show some kind of patriotism (b) Celebrate a national holiday (c) Identify a government building, like the DMV or a public school. But ever since the Gulf War, I see the flag anarchistically placed in public and I interpret the sentimental intention of it to mean something akin to "Kill those goddam rag-head sand-niggers!" It's sad that the flag has been perverted into this sort of message. Even sadder that those placing the flags have no concept of the etiquette that should used in displaying our nations symbol. Flags are randomly taped and tied to any firm surface enjoying a large amount of eye traffic, when in fact, to honor the flag, certain restrictions apply: a flag should never be flown in the rain, in the dark, or when there is not sufficient wind to keep it flying. At sunset each day, the flag is to be taken down and folded by a minimum of two people (so it never touches the ground), unless the banner is sufficient size as to be too cumbersome to be taken down daily; then a light should cast upon the flag at night. When displaying the flag vertically, the "union" should always be on the left, as it is in horizontal format. And finally if a flag is tattered, or has touched the ground, it should be disposed of properly; it must be burned. That feathered flag on the back of that police motorcycle qualifies! So just what is the sentiment behind display of the flag this week? A flag flying upside-down is a signal of a ship in distress. A flag at half-mast is to mourn a great national loss. But what of the mass ubiquitous display of a flag in its default position? -- and it's not even The Fourth of July. Though improperly expressed, I hope that the intention is one of sympathy and mourning, and not of a call to war (What nation's civilians do you bomb as retribution for an independent terrorist attack, and how will this retaliation bring back all those office workers or our nation's innocence of never having our borders violated). So friends, if you see a flag in the dark, or unweaving itself at high speed on a car antenna, or just plain flacid -- in deepest respect for the Stars and Stripes, be sure to dismount it and burn it. And during the funeral and cremation of our nations emblem, say a little prayer. |

| Comments: | i dreamed that my rabbit lou was alive again. i was very excited to discover this, but when i first saw him he was running around like crazy and doing flips in the air by the side of and sometimes in a very busy street. i felt like "goddammit lou, what do you think you're doing?" i went and picked him up out of traffic and hugged him and he was happy to see me and very cuddly. then he was in a rabbit hutch happily eating parsley and i discovered that he was pregnant. so i had to change my way of thinking about him b/c it seemed he was a female rabbit rather than the male i'd always taken him for. but then i decided that he just seemed more like a pregnant male rabbit and he was the same old lou. he was going to have 3 babies - i could sort of see the 3 hopeful lumps on his belly and i was very excited for the day coming when he would give birth. |

| Comments: | MEMORIES OF THE 90'S
Sponge. the late 80's was sponge and then the 90's continued to be sponge. I got out of mom's just before 30. I remember so many summers; getting crushes on my straight friends because we spent so much obligatory idle time together. We continued to search for what remained of the 24hr establishments. Forty-ouncers and tofu dogs. The swimming pool when the parents were away. Fourth of July and the aroma of magnolia. Barefoot at night. Cheap TacoHell. Then everyone started to escape to other states, different climates. |

| Comments: | The church is emerging from the shadows like a submarine
rising periscope first. Its towers lift into the sunlight and investigate the day, test the temperature, and determine the likelihood of saving souls. It blinks its Cyclops eye against the changing light, flashing stained glass pupil on the street. Yawning, its wooden doors swing open and clank once against the bricks before slamming shut. In the distance, it notes construction on another skyscraper is almost complete, and the new building is five times closer to god than its own towers. It scoffs, shrugs off the sinners, rolls over and goes back to sleep. |

| Comments: | There's not much to say. Too much intellect as usual. Why
not simply stop and experience and then relate? Probably because that leaves me cold. In other words, I don't like to. Which is probably why people do or do not do anything. Which means you can't, on experiential grounds, criticize me for not being more "experiential." Try to catch me, you long ago stopped trying. Too bad. |

| Comments: | I was at work and I opened the closet to go in there, but I
realized there was a lot of heavy equipment up on the shelves. I didn't know what to do so I stood against the wall. I watched all the people down the hall go running from door way to door way realizing that there were windows and skylights everywhere. They all ran to me and stood behind my desk. Then we all ran outside in the street and smoked cigarrettes. |

| Comments: | this isn't very interesting probably, but when the
earthquake struck i was at my work at a labor law office. it was a very busy day and i had already woken up exhausted. my cat had been acting crazy all morning before i left for work which was thought provoking in retrospect. when the earthquake started, i was standing looking out the front window which is by my desk wondering what i was going to do next. i was thinking coffee and an epic bar. suddenly the ground was rolling under me like being on a tossing ship. i thought it would be over soon since i'm jaded from past smaller earthquakes in seattle. it kept building and i realized the telephone poles and buildings outside were rolling on their bases as if they were in the ocean too.i ran for a close doorway, and pretty soon people i work with had materialized under the same doorways. at first i thought it was very exciting but as it continued i started to get scared and wonder about my cat, my boyfriend, and my house, and all the other people in this city. i also thought about how generally unprepared i am for natural disasters. when my mom called to see if i was ok they had just recently seen a tornado pass close by to their van as they were traveling close to florida. |

we had then. They're doing it at night because we live in Phoenix and it is too hot to paint in the daytime. I have tummy ache, and lay down on the sofa in the living room. Soon I am bawling it hurts so bad. My mother is becoming very worried, and soon calls the doctor. She is only 25. I am in the hospital and I remember some nuns, and getting anesthesia. I had a double hernia. Later I remember my Caspar talking doll with the hard plastic head and terrycloth body. A few months later, my next memory is watching JFK's funeral on our TV. Mom says I watched the whole thing, all day long. |

| Comments: | i remember the sound of the screen door. the rusty springs
and the slap of the wooden frame slamming back. it would echo in the pines like the ubiquitous dogs barking and the chainsaws. there was also something else -- the wind in the needles always made me think of water over the rocks. in the morning you would hear the sound of kids walking down the stairs. we didn't have stairs at home then, but these were the longest i've ver seen. the steps were coated with linoleum and trimed with aluminium strips. when a kid walks down stairs, the heel hits first, and then the toe follows. this happens once for every step, times the number of steps in a staircase. the walls were flat plaster with no wallpaper, panneling, or texture of any kind. so you you can hear the 'heel-toe, heel-toe, heel-toe' flange like a digereedoo. multiply this by the amount of little brothers following along. I also remember the smell of imitation maple syrup on sausage, and real pine sap in the carpet. the smell of spaghetti and meatballs at the nearest family restaurant, and the smell of tinkertoys that fell in the floor furnace. the cold and dusty smells of the basement while dad was turning the water back on, and the smell of the electric blanket after pre-heating the beds. and I remember the smell of bacon cooking. I remember the time mom just kept on cooking bacon. the plate filled up, the farmer john box went in the trash and she opened another and just kept on frying. mom and dad were quitting smoking that week. this all happened at the extended family cabin we shared in the san bernardino mountains, just a short drive from Arrowhead. my mom and dad, my brothers, and my mom's brothers and their families would go up together fo vacations, along with my mum-mum and me-me and papa. my family would sleep in one room, me-me and papa had their own room downstairs, and everyone else would sleep in the big room with 3 king-size beds. eventually they all got sick of each other and went a different times. I don't know how it lasted that long really. one summer we went up every weekend while building a new bathroom in the basement. even after it was done, no one would go unless it was an emergency. the bathtub was always full of spiders. when i see my cousins as adults. i remember to talk about it. it's about all we have in common. |

site left some small trace of themselves--how they got here, what they thought, and maybe their earliest memory. Have you ever been to an old hotel with a dusty register? "We ate plums in the orchard and had a delightful dip in the river..." Only by the time you read it the orchard was a tennis court and the river had been polluted. What do you say? |
